Outsider Directors with a Stake: The Linchpin in Improving Governance

In this 2000 study, Don Hambrick and Eric Jackson discover that most commonly prescribed corporate governance structural prescriptions have no relation to long-term increases in total shareholder returns -- except for boards who have a large number of outside directors who have purchased meaningful stakes of equity in the companies out of their own pockets.
