Outrider Opportunities for Artists and Emerging/Graduate Artists Salt Road in partnership with Herefordshire Council have been successful in their Arts Council England Grants for Arts Libraries Fund bid 2014/15 to commission a range of artists to respond to the Alfred Watkins collection of books and glass‐plated photographs on bee keeping and the subject of bees and the environment. Outrider is a touring exhibition and engaged workshop program combining the new commissions with a library collection. The funded commissions in this strand of Outrider include 4 artists’ commissions for Artists Books and one open commission, there are also 3 early stage career opportunities. The commissioned work will become part of the permanent collection of Hereford Library. The tour begins September 2014 across Museums and Libraries in the West Midlands, including The Woolhope Room, Hereford Library; The Commandery, Worcester; Winterbourne House and Gardens, Birmingham, the Llibrary of Birmingham and Haden Hill House Museum and Art Gallery, Sandwell. Salt road, Herefordshire Council Library Services and Hereford Museum Service are seeking exciting and innovative proposals from artists who are genuinely inspired by working with collections and are issue‐ driven. And crucially have the time and space to make new work this summer. Deadline for applications – 10 June, 12 midday, 2014 The Collection Alfred Watkins 1855‐1935 lived in Herefordshire, was a photographer, topographer, author of ‘The Old Straight Track’ and inventor of a light meter called the Watkins Bee Meter. His ideas have inspired many land artists including Richard Long and Hamish Fulton. He was passionate about the virtues of bee keeping and traveled the county in a demonstration van with bee experts giving magic lantern presentations. His little known collection of books and pamphlets on bee keeping was bequeathed to Hereford Library in 1934. It is a diverse and fascinating collection, referencing poetry, practical guides on bee keeping and the wider environmental significance of bees ‐ with the oldest known book on bee keeping dating from 1584. There are also many photographs taken by Alfred Watkins on bee keeping which are in the process of being digitized. Salt Road Salt Road is an artist‐led not for profit organization directed by Dr Sally Payen and Jaime Jackson who come together some of the time to create research and issue‐led projects. We are physically based in Herefordshire, West Midlands yet in our individual exhibition and project management careers operate internationally. Salt Road, formally PAR have organized and created artists’ commissions in the public realm across the Midlands over the last 10 years. For this project the Salt Road artists are undertaking the action research as drawing and moving image commissions.
