Perhaps it is pertinent that ratter than la~ an editorial for thisedition we have a report on the Annual Wri. ral Meetirg which was

at terded.As is custcmary the meeting axeenced with ~improving the minutes ofthe previous A G M. The Chairman opene& his report by askingmembers to stand in silent tribute to those i;embers who had answered

Jackson who had been del ighted to 1ea rn of the whereabouts ofCharles RicHell and had written to him. '(e had knub him as a

dedicated policeman. Percy Barnes who was present at the meeting

expressed similar sentimnts ~ Charles and undertook to write tohim.As far as the BSAP Trust was concerned, tte Chairman expressed histhanks to those members who had cov ..rented thei r annual

~ripticns to the Trust, and was hearten 4 by the many who had

covenanted a larger sum than their subscrioticns. So far minorassistance had been given in two cases, but he felt the need would

i rerease and hcped that al 1 who cculd, w» ld 'do thei r bi t ' toestablish a substantial trust. He cited tte case of a member who

had retired to another country but owing to the declining exchangerate reducing the value of his pension and such other funds as hecrxjld obtain from Zimbabwe, the pensioner, nw in the evening of hislife, was beset by poverty. Regrettably, ).". said, this was mt anisolated case.

in two years he was due to retire and the future printing of The

Outpost ~~ld have to te resolved as the facility available to him

would tten cease.Pt this stage the Cha&rman nede reference to the canments in the

last edition of The Outpost coreernirq t?m late Ken Flower's book&

"Serving Secretly". He stated that nore written reaction had been

qenerated on this matter than any one item so far in the ten issues

of the ~azine. This reaction had been verv varied - whether

cannent in any form s)nu)d have been made, favorable, and regret

that Keith Raw~'s cement in the Natal Outpost had been quoted.

Acknmlerk)inq the fact that he was also the Editor, the Chairman

observed that such reaction per se was encouraging in that it ~that tte magazine was read ard stated that the only criticism {and

that was a harsh word in the context) of the late Ken Flcwer in his

ca@rents was that the book had been written at all. He agreed that

per?cps quotinq from t?e Natal Outpost could be construed as bias,

although none existed as far as he was concerned. He did feel that

the varied resporee had confirmed his t)~ry that everyone

interprets what he reads fran his cd particular philoscphy on the

subje=t matter.The financial statement for 1987 was presented and approved, a copy

of which is reproduced el~here in this edition. It should be

noted that the BSAP Trust for accountinq purposes had only cane into

b inq on 1st. January 1988.Prising from last year's A G M when it had been decided that only

one third of the Cannittee should retire to provide a greater degree

of continuity, t?e Chairman advised that Mike Leach, Brian Tirdale

and he would retire by rotaticn, ~ver a preposition that theY be

re-elected into their re~~tive offices was carried unaninmsly.

All three expressed thei r preciation of the confidence shown in

them. Peter Short and Stan Bolas had intimated their desire to

starx) down and the members erA&rsed a hearty vote of thanks to them

for their services to the Asmiaticn in qeneral and this Branch in

par t icular, In order to fac i 1 i tate rotation of the Ccmnit tee

meters, t?~ Carmittee's ~st icn that they rat be replaced was

accepted, the Cannittee now crgprises 9 ~rs as appearinq on the

back paqe of this issue.

Guy Wilson encpired if the A G M cculd be i oved around to different

centres to give the cpportunity of atterditiq to a greater number of

members. The weekerd progranae of the N R P A who have their A G M

ard dinner over a weekerd at Kenilworth»s ttentioned, the dinner

being for merrbers, their ~s and frien~is, It was decided that

opinicns on these two points should be canvassed through the

to the FIRST TUESDAY in each nanth, the venue remaining the sane at

the RUGBY CUJB. The bar opens at 5pn and closes rather late !Brian Tirdale paid tribute to the Regional Co-ordinators, the local

functicns were proving popular and further members had been found

ard many old frierdships re~.Ricky May's request that name tags be worn at the A G M to refresh

memories was erdorsed.Well that lot took cne and a quarter hours to achieve and so at

7, 20pm the members repaired to the bar to reminisce, quaff the odd

pint and enjoy scme cheese, pickles and . oils etc before wending

tteir respective ways home.

On Sunday 24th April 1988 the sun shone on 3 half 44 gallon drums

strategically placed in a certain spot from which arose the aroma ofsteak, chops, boerewors, supplemented by sadza and baked spuds. No

it was not in Rhodesia but in a small town on the borders of Surrey

Hotel, a hostelry operated by none other than Dave Chanpion 5436.Gathering around those drums were some 60 men, ~ s children

brought together by a bOrd of conra3eship fran serving with the BSAp

true, not all were BSAP, but those who were not were family,friends and associates. Nostalgic rrerrories flooded back. Those

Kexswell were elected to the Board of Trusteeswhilst the serving committee was re-elected enbloc, President Sid Bristow, Vice-PresidentShiner Wright and Secretary/Treasurer John(Bomber) Davidson heading the Committee. 46members attended and apologi. es were xeceivedfrom 19 members including their Newsletter prod-ucer Hugh Phillips who was recovering from aspell in hospital. We are glad to learn that hehas recovexed well as we acknowledge receipt ofNewsletter No. 21 of June 1988 which opens withan apology from Hugh for producing the Newsletterthree weeks late. Slaking his thirst duringrecovery with copious draughts of "Harare '88 DryWhite" (probably fxom the Makubusi) he wasreminded of a sentence attributed to the 17th.Century dramatist, John Fletcher - 'I find themedi. cine worse than the malady'.Hugh reports a call from Angus Ross with notesof his vi.sit to Jo'burg. Angus endeavoured tomeet up with colleagues from his CID days and ashe says 'although I only made contact with a few,the meetings, lunches, dinners and casual en-counters were long and fulfilling'. His mainsource of information was Hank Hankinson in hisJoubert Street shop 'heavy with atmostphere andloaded with memorabilia'. Paul May, now doingvery well with a mining company, joined them andthis led to contact with Dave Willis, Ray Stenner,Dave Sloman, Roy Welch and Jock Pirrett. DaveWillis has led a successful career in the miningworld down South, Dave Sloman works for a computercompany, Roy Welch has a successful privateinvestigator's business whilst Jock Pirrett hasrisen to a good position in an insurance companyas well as having his own insurance business.

We are told that Jock still manages his golfevery Frifday afternoon, perhaps it is due tothe modern version of "I've got my Captainworking for me now" in the guise of RayStenner whose appetite for those 'cigars' (?)(burmese cheroots I think - Ed. ) remains un-diminished. Angus concludes 'I think it mustbe some txibute to the old selection process,training and experience that these guys aredoing so well". Ray Stennex, despite allrumours is hale and hearty and has recoveredwell from his surgery.Last edition we reported the tragic death ofWP62 Margaxet (Chunky) Chisholm. Hugh reportson her funera] at Harax'e Cemetery which drew alarge numbex' of mourners including many who hadserved with her in the BSAP - Fran Fourie, UnaPhillips, Shirley Wilson, Jane Mackenzie, BettyRavenscxoft, Bernice Ferrari forming part ofthe contingent of former Women Poli. ce.

We do not think the branches in Zimbabwe issuetheir own newsletters so we will quote fromHugh's reports on their activities. Firstly,Mutare where the Branch A. G. M. was held on l4th.April resulting in the same committee going backinto office, that is Tony Gale - Chairman,Harry Went - Secretary and members - John Cookeand Messrs Kelham, Smith 8 Brent. It was notedthat P Lapage, D Raaf, J Ranby, E Birxell andJ van der Pyll had left the axea, N Monoghan hadresigned and Ginger Kirkwood, Harold DeBene andand Mrs Plastow had died. Mention was made ofJohnny Worsley at Witchwood Nursery in Mutare andBill (A. E.F. ) Bailey in Chimanimani who appearfit and well. Lunching recently at the New Club, Hugh saw Alan

Godwin, Paddy Leen 4583 and Monty Friendship and

on another occasion saw Paddy Hogan (sorry Hugh

but he is not a '46 er according to our records)who apparently joined the Force after the war

and served for three years before going mining

where he appears to have had a successful career.

The Pensioners Golf Trophy saw Jack Hammond dem-

olish a field which included Butch Buckley, J B

Robertson, G A Roberston, John (Tacky 2) MacIntosh,Alan Godwin, Cyril Robinson, Brian Cowling and a

name unknown to Hugh a Mr Iredale. The ForceChampion was Sgt A Mandaza with a 164, not a badscore playing to a 10 handicap. The winners atthe 19th. hole were Barry Cotton, Digger Digweedand of course our President, Sid Bristow.

Natal - We also acknowledge receipt of NatalOutpost No. 26 of June 1988. I had dug out a number of squad phc ographs, team and mess

photographs, and memories came floodin; back durinq the

morning session.

As you are aware I was instructing n depot from 1948

1971 prior to moving to Troutbeck Inn ~. Inyanga and then to the

Greys Scouts (The Donkey Wallapens) in 976 - 1977 and then my

final years 1n Rhodesia as Hayor' s "Hai . " durinq the hand over

take over period. During the above per od I was constantly

in contact with members of Regiment.

From the turnout of members at the , .'inners held in Durban

and Pietermaritsburg it is obvious that ~embers of the

Regiment have found Hatal a happy retir~ mnt haven.

Keith Rawsons history of the footba' l teams from 1948 was

most interesting, Of course, what Kent:. ommitted was thatmembers played Football on Saturday - He =key on Sunday morning

and Rugby on Sunday afternoon and still sad time for a sing

song on Sunday evening at the canteen - "Clancy lowered theboom" etc.

I wonder if Keith will remember his ~romotion course from

snd being handed an envelope, and being told in no uncertain

with his children, he now works for 10 - 12 hours per day, 7 days

Per week for six months, then he hopes to spend his next Christmas

break with his daughter in Australia. He enquired about memkers in

Destroyers operating out of Scapa Flew, 1&is ship was diverted to

assist a convoy which was urder attack north of Iceland. Later

whilst serving in the Mediterranean, Joe entered a BBC programne

serd ing in a 'quest ion to beat the par ~1' in the radio show

'Hediterranean Herry-go-round' ~ His quest i~ about the 'Pillars of

Hercules' at the entrance to the Strait. A1 Gibraltar, defeated the

panel, and his prize of E5 was donated at his request to Mr s

Churchill's Aid Russia Fund. He re~iv&d a personal letter of

Various members receive lists of books published by Galaqo. These

tooks generally are about Rhodesia, South Africa etc and many have a

strong military background. In the lists are also videos, prints

and hunting classics. Those interested might care to enquire of

Galago at P 0 Box 404, Alberton, 1450, R.S.A.

Arthur Weston 3686 writes saying that the last editorial pronpted

his recall of the General Record Book and the section relating to

'Isolated Graves' which had to be visited annually and tidied up.

Entries such as 'Trooper Smith died of fever 1897' and Trooper

Robinson killed by a lion 1898" and 'Corporal Jones died of a snake

bite 1901' follrwed by directions to locate the graves, such as 'Two

miles north east of Ndhlovu's Kraal under giant baobab tree' bore

dates and details of members who had made these pilqrirrages to the

f inal resting places of earlier ~rs of the Force. Always

remote and often entailing %urs of search, Arthur wonders if in

this modern age such details are recorded on a corrputer and visited

by helicopter. Does any record remain or have they vanished into

the limbo of the forgotten past '? Can anyone say 2

4856 David John Price Watkins who injured his neck in a swimming

accident atoard the Stirling Castle en route to Rhodesia which/

prevented him undergoing training, he returned to the U K after

about six months and has not been heard of since; and finally 4857

Michael Benjamin Wiltshire who resides at Highcliffe on Sm, Dorset

and who is a regular attender at U K functicns. Fred also informs

us that Ian Nard joined the squad in Depot, and after reaching the

rank of D/Sgt or D/Insp left to go to university in the Republic

where he obtained a degree. Finally Fred pays tribute to his old

friend Bob Berger, the Secretary of the Bulawayo Branch of the

Association for his dedication to the Associaticn and that Branch.
