First planning: deliver two TCAPDs to EN/STI by the end of 2013

2 months of delay in the raw material (copper) procurement, almost entirely absorbed thanks to a crash program

Two TCAPDs completed on 16th January 2014, including:

Machining EB welding Metrology Final mechanical assembly of the support

structures (ancillary supports included) TCAPDs transported to b. 272 (EN/STI) for the

final tests (bake-out, vacuum, etc.)

3 TCSP collimators to be produced (2 to be installed + 1 spare) Delays for the production coming from BPM cables. High outgassing rate due to

cracks in the weldings between cables and connectors (discovered in December 2011) Problem solved by the supplier with the help of CERN material and welding experts,

but TCSP cables shipped to CERN only in July 2013 and provided to EN/MME after testing in September 2013!

Collimators ready for EN/STI on the third week of November, thanks to a big effort from all the people involved!

EN/STI final operations and bake-out completed by mid-January

Vacuum issues

2 TCSP tested after bake-out: both are vacuum-tight and without contamination

Outgassing test: the first is compliant with LHC specification, the second one is above the outgassing limit and cannot be installed as it is

The test has been repeated three times, and the results are confirmed, even if the outgassing rate has decreased each time

According vacuum experts, this could be due to internal leaks: it can be related to the connection BPM cables / flange (absence of outgassing hole in the connector)

What’s next?

The third TCSP is now being vacuum-tested, to possibly replace the second one: results expected by the end of week 6. A BPM flange had to be replaced because it was leaking! (2nd time we find a leaking BPM flange…)

In parallel, vacuum tests on TCSP n. 2 are going on (to assess if the outgassing be related to the BPM connections with the flange)

Can we think about a long pumping and bake-out cycle (or multiple bake-outs) to decrease the outgassing down to LHC specification?

The problem of trapped air inside the BPM connector has to be taken into account also for the TCTP series!

Proposal: electro-erosion cutting on BPM connector

Conclusions

3 February 2014

TCAPD: machined, delivered and currently under bake-out and vacuum tests

TCSP:

Machined, delivered to EN/STI, vacuum-tested

TCSP n. 1 OK, TCSP n. 2 outside LHC specification, TCSP n. 3 (spare) under testing

Tests on TCSP n. 2 ongoing to understand the origin of the problem and proposals to cope with it under examination

TESTS ON ALTERNATIVE COATINGS

3 February 2014 F. Carra – EN-MME 13

The black coating used for radio tube anodes has been taken in consideration: Very high emissivity, measured with the thermal camera: 0.9 Even more volatile surface than CrO, easily detachable by hand!

TESTS ON BLACK CHROME

Black Chrome

Graphite

14

Outgassing tests of the black chrome have been performed by G. Cattenoz (EDMS n.1213905): High outgassing rates, but within the limits for LHC vacuum Dusty surface (risk of particles detachment) A SEM observation was performed by N. Jimenez Mena to compare morphology and porosity of

Black Chrome and Graphite (EDMS n. 1220547). “The Cr coating shows many cracks and some inhomogeinities on the surface. However, the porosity and discontinuities in the graphite reference seem to be higher.”
