Old Testament Echoes

There many similarities between Peter’s mission to Corneliusand the Prophet Jonah’s mission to the Gentiles of Ninevah.Listed below are some of the parallels:

Peter’s Aramaic name is Simon bar Jonah (Matt. 16:17).

Jonah

Peter is called from Joppa to go to Cornelius’ house(Acts 9:36,43; 10:23).

Jonah, who was in Joppa, was reluctant to leave andproclaim the Word of God in Ninevah (Jonah 1:3).

Peter protests, and has to be summoned three times(Acts 10:15-16).

The Conversion of Saul Caravaggio (1600)

Jonah spends three nights in the whale’s belly afterprotesting about having to go to a Gentile community(Jonah 2:1).

Cornelius and his household repent and are baptized(Acts 10:48; 47-48).

The Ninevites repent (Jonah 3:1-10).

The traditional Jews respond angrily (Acts 10:14; 11:1-2).

The traditional Jews respond angrily (Jonah 4:1).

God refutes Peter’s argument. The Gentile mission is awork of God (Acts 11:17-18).

God refutes Jonah’s argument. The Gentile mission is awork of God (Jonah 4:2-11).
