question below. Then you will have 15 minutes to write your essay.

Outline and evaluate the multi-store model of memory. (12 marks).

Outline (A01) Evaluation (A02)

Discuss: Sensory Memory (Capacity, Duration,

Encoding) Short-Term Memory (Capacity, Duration,

Encoding) Long-Term Memory (Capacity, Duration,

Encoding)

The processes involved, i.e. attention, rehearsal etc. and how information flows through the model.

2x Strengths and 2x Weaknesses:Strengths include: Clive Wearing Laboratory Evidence

Weaknesses include: Flashbulb Memories Patient KF

Oversimplified

Be clear on why the above are either strengths of the MSM or limitations.

Conclusion: In terms of the strengths and weaknesses do you think the MSM is a good or bad model of memory.

The Problem with MSM…

You will be shown a series of digits, one at a time, on the whiteboard. Try to remember these digits, while completing the verbal reasoning task on page one of your handout. Your teacher will tell you when to write the digits down, in the space provided below.

The Problem with MSM…

How many of the numbers did you remember?

What do these results suggest about the Multi-Store Model?

Dual-Memory TaskRobinson (2014)

If your table is on the left-hand side of the room (when looking at the whiteboard) you’re in Group A. If your table is on the right-hand side of the room, you’re in Group B.

Read the instructions on page 1 (group A) or page 3 (group B) and complete the task…

Harlow worked with rhesus monkeys, which are more mature at birth than humans, but like human babies show a range of emotions and need to be nursed. He took infant monkeys away from their real mothers, giving them instead two artificial mothers, one model made of wire and the other made of cloth.

The wire model was outfitted with a bottle to feed the baby monkey. But the babies rarely stayed with the wire model longer than it took to get the necessary food. They clearly preferred cuddling with the softer cloth model, especially if they were scared. (When the cloth model had the bottle, they didn't go to the wire model at all.)

Dual-Memory Task

Now write down all the words you can remember from the first task you completed. You have one minute to complete this task.

Swap your word list with the person next to you and count how many words they correctly recalled: cost, chief, dance, door, box, body, beauty, cloud, camp, doctor art, degree, ease, danger, bat, area, coast, break, cover, element

Answer the following questions:1) Identify the IV and DV in this experiment? 2) What experimental design was used? 3) Outline one strength and one weakness of using this design. 4) What do the results of this experiment show? 5) What can we conclude in relation to memory?

Working Memory Model

Replaces the concept of a unitary STM.

It proposes that our STM is made up of multi-components and is active (Working Memory Model).

This model is not concerned with Sensory Memory or LTM.

Page 11: Outline and evaluate the multi-store model of memory. (12 marks).

Dual-Task Activity

The findings from the dual-task activity (Robinson, 2014) are not compatible with the MSM. Why?

To explain the results, STM must consist of several components that can work independently of each other, so can therefore handle more than one task at a time.

Working Memory ModelPrep & Homework

Complete the ‘Working Memory Model: Key Points’ handout.

Use the ‘Working Memory Model – Cut & Paste’ handout to recreate the WMM in your exercise books. Also, match the key words on the second page of this handout with their definitions.

Extension: Research ‘Baddeley and Hitch (1976) Dual Task’ experiment and write a short aim, method, results, conclusion – summarising their research.
