1st January, 2020 Dear Orchid Friends and Customers, I am not sure where to start! It has been such a busy year with so much happening – some planned and others a surprise! The planned trip to the States in June did happen, but the unplanned event was the sale of the Ark farm to someone I knew in my dressage days in Cape Town. So, May was particularly busy in planning for my future. I had Hall family reasons to be in Pittsburgh the first week of June, but the second week I flew down to South Carolina and spent nearly a week with Gene and Kitty Crocker who live right next door to Carter & Holmes nursery. Mac Holmes Jnr is now running it and Bridget Uzar is my go to person in the office – she runs everything! The whole team is very professional and I had a great day in the laboratory watching seeding on agar and also mericloning. A visit to Marble Branch Farms with Gene was a fabulous days outing. Lots of hours spent in the greenhouses choosing plants to send back here. Returned home towards the end of June and then the countdown began to start packing and relocating. I have bought in a golf estate nearby and the idea was to leave the nursery on the farm for the time being. Moving that at the same time was going to be a mission that I didn’t want to tackle. Completed the move at the end of September and am now quite well established in my new home together with dogs and cats. This has given me time to think out the possible move of the nursery and when a plot of land came on the market, I jumped at the chance and bought it. The shadehouse is going up now (November) and will be completed beginning December. The plants will then all be moved and the new nursery will be up and running from the beginning of January. All just 10 minutes walk from my front door! Apart from all this, I managed to exhibit and sell at our local show in George end September – again very successful. The new stock from Carter & Homes arrived in 12 days door to door using the Post Office – a record time compared to the last few years. Then a trip to Kruger ending in the National Show at White River to collect plants from Ecuagenera and also Ten Shin Gardens. The boxes were all stored in the Xcape camper and carefully driven home. Arrived in perfect condition! At present I have a Black Friday special running until the end of the month – will give feedback on this in the next newsletter. Wishing you all the best for a fabulous orchid growing year in 2020! Else Hall
