MERRY CHRISTMAS & WELCOME HOME TO JESUS THE DIVINE WORD
CHURCH!
As we interact responsibly with one another during this
pandemic, we at Jesus the Divine Word welcome all who are new to
our faith
community, returning to the Catholic Church, searching for a
spiritual home or simply visiting with us during this Christmas
season.
We are glad you are with us. We understand the difficulties
associated with these days and want you to feel welcome and at
home
whether you are with us physically or through live-stream. It is
a blessing to have you here.
If you are interested in learning more about our parish or
registering as a parishioner, we invite you to contact our pastor,
Fr. John Dakes at [email protected] or any member of our
parish staff at
410-414-8304. We also invite you to view other areas of our
website - www.jesusdivineword.org – and to download our
registration form, the link of
which is on the front page of the website. We look forward to
meeting and getting to know you. Welcome!
Dear Friends,
Do you recognize these names? Noble Offspring of David; Spouse
of the Mother of God; Foster-Father of the Son of God; Head of the
Holy Family; Mirror of Patience; Model of Workmen; Pillar of
Families; Comfort of the Afflicted; Hope of the Sick; Patron of the
Dying; Protector of the Holy Church. These are just some of the
titles associated with St. Joseph. I share them with you today
because on December 8th, Pope Francis announced the Year of St.
Joseph (December 8, 2020 – December 8, 2021) to coincide with the
150th anniversary of St. Joseph being declared Patron of the
Catholic Church by Pope Pius IX in his decree Quemadmodum Deus.
To focus our attention during this extraordinary year on St.
Joseph is particularly appropriate as more than 300,000 Americans
have died just from COVID-19 related issues; with an unemployment
rate of 6.7%, significantly higher from a year ago when it was
3.5%; when we have come to the realization of how much we rely on
“essential workers,” whether at hospitals, grocery stores, Walmart
or elsewhere; when our patience has grown thin due to restrictions,
elections, divisions in our world, nation and Church and much more.
In this Year of St. Joseph Pope Francis is calling our attention to
the great friend, strong protector, and powerful intercessor we
have before the throne of God.
As the Church celebrates this Year of St. Joseph, I will convey
with you how we at JDW are observing the year by way of this
bulletin, the parish website, Flocknotes and pulpit announcements.
In the meantime, beginning today, the Feast of the Holy Family, of
which Joseph is the Head, we will conclude our Masses by asking the
intercession of the Patron and Protector of the Church. Copies of
the prayer will be provided.
“St. Joseph enfold us and those we love and serve in your prayer
and obtain for us the daily bread of grace we need for this
life.”
Peace and blessings, Fr. John

LIVING THE WORD Week of December 27
Theme: A Family Affair
“ . . . They took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the
Lord.” Luke 2:22b
Challenge:
How are you/your family fulfilling your promises to the
Lord?
WELCOME HOME - COVID UPDATE With the rise of COVID cases in the
state Governor Hogan has changed the guidelines for churches and
all religious establishments. Church capacity has been reduced
to
50%. Since we have not reached 50% capacity due to our faithful
following of CDC, State and local guidelines requiring social
distancing of 6 feet between
individuals/households and the use of facecloths/masks for
everyone at Mass there are no changes at JDW at this time. We
continue to take seriously the physical and
spiritual health of our parishioners and want to be sure that at
no time is someone at risk while in our church. Everyone’s
participation in following all the guidelines as well as the
instruction of the ushers is essential for this to occur. This
includes keeping
facemasks on when approaching the minister for Communion. DO NOT
lower your masks until having stepped away from the minister. After
placing the Eucharist in your mouth, then please put your mask on
again. For further
information regarding participation please see the parish
website. Until further notice the dispensation from the obligation
to attend Mass on Sundays and
Holy Days of Obligation is still in effect. As a reminder,
weekday Masses are celebrated Tuesday through Friday at 8:00 AM
with Saturday Morning Mass at 9:00 AM. Sunday Masses are
celebrated at 5:00 PM on Saturday and 8:00 and 10:00 AM on Sunday.
Doors open 30 minutes before
Mass. Parishioners may choose to sit in the church (as long as
there is room) or go directly to Doran Hall. Both the 5 PM and the
10 AM Masses are live streamed. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is
celebrated on Wednesday evenings from
7:00 – 8:00 PM and Saturday afternoons from 3:30 – 4:30 PM
between the priest vesting sacristy and Fr. John’s office.
Confessions are celebrated either face-to-face or
with anonymity, all depending on the desire of the penitent.
Appointments are also welcomed.
Parish offices are open, though on a revised schedule this
Christmas week and some staff may be working remotely if they did
not take vacation time. Office hours this
week are Tuesday through Thursday 9 AM – 12:30 PM. The best way
to reach staff is still through e-mail. All appointments need to be
set up in advance through a
phone call or e-mail that proper safety procedures can be
guaranteed. Thank you for your continued cooperation and
understanding.

CRITICALLY ILL or HOSPITALIZED during the CORONAVIRUS?
Caring for the sick is an important ministry of the Church. In
this ministry the Church prays for the sick, visits the
sick, provides the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick and
Viaticum (one’s last Communion), if a person is dying.
Though we are living in very unusual times at the present due to
the coronavirus, we are still committed to ensuring that no one who
is sick will be neglected.
If a person is critically ill or dying we are asking that a
family member notify the parish office as soon as possible by
calling 410-414-8304 and speaking with
either Fr. John (ext. 11) or Bobbie Woollen (ext. 10).
A reminder, too, that the parish emergency phone number (to be
used only when someone is critically ill or dying) is
443-624-2692.
Please call only, do not text (it’s a flip phone). Please note,
too, that clergy are required to follow certain directives at the
hospital and nursing home at this time
and that those directives could change. Thank you.

BLESSING OF FAMILIES
Today is the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph.
While we honor the sacred
family in which the Savior of the World lived, we also seek to
lift up and pray for our own families,
especially in this Year of St. Joseph, the Spouse of Mary and
foster father of Jesus.
The feast also presents the Holy Family as the
model for all Christian families. Our family life becomes
sanctified when we live the life of the
Church within our homes.
After all Masses today we will offer a blessing for each of our
families present
and live-streaming, no matter the make-up of your family.

“O Little Town of Bethlehem”
The fact that Jesus chose to be born in Bethlehem is very
important. Bethlehem is the city where
David was born, the second King of Israel. Jesus, the last King
of Israel, by being born in Bethlehem, follows in David’s footsteps
as the royal heir to the
Kingdom of God.
Bethlehem is a Jewish word that means “House of Bread.”
Jesus declared Himself to be the Bread of Life in John 6:35.
When the Blessed Virgin Mary
placed Jesus in a feeding trough (a manger) for sheep
inside the stable, she gave us a
foreshadowing of the Eucharist – the stable represents the
church,
the manger is the altar, and Jesus is the
Eucharist, or the supernatural Bread of Life. We are His sheep
who come to the altar
on Sundays to commune with Him.

PARISH HAPPENINGS
A strong man who wavered for a moment, but then learned one
cannot come to terms with evil, and so became a strong churchman, a
martyr,
and a saint—that was Thomas Becket, archbishop of Canterbury,
murdered in his cathedral on December 29, 1170.
His career had been a stormy one. While archdeacon of
Canterbury, he was made chancellor of England at the age of 36 by
his friend
King Henry II. When Henry felt it advantageous to make his
chancellor the archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas gave him fair
warning: he might not accept all of Henry’s intrusions into Church
affairs. Nevertheless, in
1162 he was made archbishop, resigned his chancellorship, and
reformed his whole way of life!
Troubles began. Henry insisted upon usurping Church rights. At
one time, supposing some conciliatory action possible, Thomas came
close to compromise. He momentarily approved the Constitutions of
Clarendon, which would have denied the clergy the right of trial by
a Church court and prevented them from making
direct appeal to Rome. But Thomas rejected the Constitutions,
fled to France for safety, and remained in exile for seven years.
When he returned to England he suspected it would mean certain
death. Because Thomas
refused to remit censures he had placed upon bishops favored by
the king, Henry cried out in a rage, “Will no one rid me of this
troublesome priest!” Four knights, taking his words as his wish,
slew Thomas in
the Canterbury cathedral.
