“Then there is the stigma that all female athletes are or 'get turned' in to lesbians anyway. It frustrates me that being someone who was in a heterosexual relationship for most of my life I am giving this stigma validity in the minds of the ignorant people who believe it.”

“There are a few areas in my life that I know are not accepting of gay people. Some are work related, others to do with family members being unaware. I know I would lose some job opportunities. I guess its an unknown area as there are not many out athletes in my sport in Australia.”

“Everyone is very supportive and accepting. Obviously we are all there to do a job and personal lives stay out of the sport but it is no secret and never has been.”

I am extremely lucky to be a female athlete in Canberra. The Canberra community is very supportive as a whole. Having a few successful female sporting teams in Canberra with prominent gay athletes means there is a big support group available.

I think it’s important for there to be strong powerful female athletes. If that means they’re gay, then I’d encourage them to own it.
