Ideas and images come to Mary Sumner while she’s ‘out and about’, on her daily walks. She doesn’t usually wait long for inspiration, something will occur. A bird or animal will approach her, or she will sit and watch the interactions of the wildlife around her. For example, in Meeting on the Path a plucky duck engages with two dogs, while in Visitor Mary spots a sole Egyptian swan who has joined the regulars on the canal.

Mary also paints architecture within the landscape, either near her Devon home or on her travels. Church in a Field was painted early in the year at Wadenhoe, Northants, a special spot near her childhood home. Ayshford Field is by the Western Canal, a place she has strong attachment to due to its peacefulness and beauty, and for the nature that can be found on its banks.

Mary has particularly enjoyed creating the work for this exhibition. We hope you find it as diverse, engaging and uplifting as we do.

Mark Hall needs little introduction. His fabulous conker and fruit sculpture continues to amaze and delight gallery regulars and newcomers alike. We’re delighted to have a new body of work for 2014 featured in this exhibition.

Helen Butler is a local jeweller whose simple, playful and elegant designs are easy to wear and eye catching. We have a large selection of her jewellery in the gallery. The highlights of which are illustrated on these pages.
