Welcome to our second issue of Our Schools Our Town, your source for information about Redwood City schools, events, businesses and organizations in our community.

We received a lot of positive feedback from our first issue — from schools, parents and our community. And that’s what we were hoping for. The idea behind this publication is that schools, parents, businesses and organizations working and interacting together make for a more tightly linked community. In turn, a strong community makes for strong schools.

When we were deciding on a name for our publication, we felt Our Schools Our Town encompassed our philosophy the best. Schools and the town, supporting each other. Despite current budget and economic woes, we believe that businesses supporting schools and families buying from local business will make a better community for everyone — schools, families and businesses.

“Give Until it Hurts!” This was the advice given by

Georgia Solkov Jack, 2011 recipient of our RCEF Inspiration

Award, in her acceptance speech at this year’s Benefit for

a Brighter Future (BBF) event. The theme of the evening,

however, was “Have Fun, Be Inspired, Celebrate.” Happily

all these directives were followed. Guests enjoyed a lively

reception, were inspired by our three brilliant student speakers,

were further motivated by Ralph Garcia who accepted our

Investors Award on behalf of the Port of Redwood City, and

then emptied their wallets for our kids. Thanks to the generosity

of our business, citizen, and education community members, we

raised over $115,000 to support our children’s education. We

especially thank our lead sponsors Wells Fargo, Google, and the

Port of Redwood City, as well as our host Pacific Shores Center

and our worldclass team of BBF volunteers.

Music 911 We are once again launching an emergency

response to keep instrumental music alive in our schools. See

how you can help at: www.rcef.org/music.

New Wellness SMART Grant for 2011/12 We thank Sequoia Health District (SHD) for their gift of

$15,000 for wellness-related teacher grants. This is in addition

to $4 million provided by the SHD directly to our school

district for health and wellness programs.

Dear Parents and Community Members,

Recently I had the opportunity to speak at the RCEF’s annual Benefit for a Brighter Future, and would like to share the remarks I made there with all of you:

Tonight I am going to tell you something you may not expect to hear – good news! Like the rest of the state, we face serious challenges, but you will not find a district with more heart, hope and optimism – and I say this as a 33-year veteran of the teaching profession! I noticed this quality the first time I visited Redwood City, and it has only grown during these years of budget shortfalls. Those of you who have children enrolled in our schools know what I am talking about!

Our schools are built on a strong foundation of highly trained staff, research-based teaching strategies, academic rigor, involved families and growing support from the wider community.

• Our teachers give it their all, every day, even with larger classes, because they want their students to succeed. I visit classrooms every week and I am so proud of the determination and commitment shown by our amazing staff. This year, our entire K-3 teaching staff won a San Mateo County Literacy award for their work in using assessments to improve reading.

• We offer a slate of school choices unique on the Peninsula, and our programs receive accolades. Adelante, North Star and Orion are California Distinguished Schools. Adelante, Hoover, North Star and Orion have all received Kent Awards from the San Mateo County School Boards Association for innovative practices. Three of our schools – Taft, Hawes and Henry Ford – have been taken off the state’s program improvement list, a near impossible task.

• Our students pursue excellence in academics and the arts, and they are honored for it. One Hoover student and one Hoover alum received Youth of the Year awards from the Boys and Girls Club and recently had the opportunity to meet former secretary of state Condoleeza Rice. Our graduates excel in area high schools, and this year many were accepted at some of the finest universities in the country, including Stanford, MIT, Brown, UCLA and Berkeley, among others.

(continued on pg. 12)

At the May 11 school board meeting, the board ratified the calendar proposed by the Redwood City Teacher’s Association. The number of days school will be in session for 2011-12 depends on the amount of funding provided by the State of California. Calendar A will be the school calendar if the budget Governor Jerry Brown proposed in January prevails; calendar B will be used if the Governor and Legislature pass an “all cuts” budget.

(continued from pg. 5) • Our parents not only teach Art in Action, help in the classroom, chaperone field trips and serve on PTAs, PTOs and Site Council, we have parents who have become involved in advocacy at the state level to ensure that schools throughout the state get the resources they need.

• Educate Our State and Educacy were both founded by parents in our district and they are making a difference!

• Our community has stepped up to the plate in amazing ways during the last few years, and many of you in the room tonight have been a part of that. We would have made even more serious cuts to our music program, if not for the extra money raised by RCEF in the last few weeks of the last school year.

In short, we have a lot to be thankful for in these challenging times. When the current crisis passes, and it will, we are well positioned to soar in future years. I believe that day is coming, and those of you who invest in our schools today will have reason to be proud tomorrow! Thank you for your support!

Jan ChristensenSuperintendent
