July 2018 Volume 1, Issue 7 First Christian Church of Kent (Disciples of Christ) OUR HEARTBEAT DWELLING IN THE WORD As a church we have been working on listening better to our com- munity and how God is calling us to be apart of ministry already being done all around us. This is hard work. It is difficult to learn to listen more intentionally. One of the ways we are working to im- prove this skill is by doing something called “Dwelling in the Word.” This past Sunday we had the pleasure of having guest Rev. Dr. Da- vid Hahn speak about Dwelling in the Word. In this practice we are asking to turn to the Scriptures for our inspiration. We were asked to use Luke 10:1-12. This is a practice of listening. The idea is to read the same verses and reflect on the mean- ing then and there through a se- ries of questions. We then turn to a partner and ask for their answers WITHOUT commenting. Then, they interview us. The group comes back together, and each person reports on what they heard, not what they them- selves said. This is often a real challenge. Experiences change, and our reaction to Biblical verses is often colored by where we are in the moment. Read the same verses in a day or two. Do you dwell on anything differently? OURHEARTBEAT DWELLING IN THE WORD
As a church we have been working on listening better to our com-
munity and how God is calling us to be apart of ministry already
being done all around us. This is hard work. It is difficult to learn to
listen more intentionally. One of the ways we are working to im-
prove this skill is by doing something called “Dwelling in the Word.”
This past Sunday we had the pleasure of having guest Rev. Dr. Da-
vid Hahn speak about Dwelling in the Word. In this practice we are
asking to turn to the Scriptures for our inspiration. We were asked
to use Luke 10:1-12. This is a practice of listening.
The idea is to read the same
verses and reflect on the mean-
ing then and there through a se-
ries of questions. We then turn
to a partner and ask for their
answers WITHOUT commenting.
Then, they interview us. The
group comes back together, and
each person reports on what
they heard, not what they them-
selves said. This is often a real
challenge. Experiences change, and our reaction to Biblical verses
is often colored by where we are in the moment. Read the same
verses in a day or two. Do you dwell on anything differently?

DWELLING IN THE WORD (CONTINUED…)
These verses call us to go out into our communities to listen and learn. There we will find God.
Our goal is to join God in our neighborhoods and be a witness. Try this experiment. Go out into
your daily life and see how you would answer the questions. Take a walk around and just lis-
ten. How often do any of us listen to others? We are usually too busy projecting our own voice.
Give it a try—Go out and listen.
Questions—
• Where did you find yourself stopping or being caught in this text?
• How was your imagination engaged by this text—words, phrases, or ideas?
• Where might the Spirit of God be speaking to you, to us, to our congregation?
THE MISSION OF THE SEVENTY
LUKE 10 After this the Lord appointed seventy others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs
to every town and place where he himself intended to go. 2 He said to them, “The harvest is
plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers
into his harvest. 3 Go on your way. See, I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of
wolves. 4 Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and greet no one on the road. 5 Whatever house
you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this house!’ 6 And if anyone is there who shares in peace, your
peace will rest on that person; but if not, it will return to you. 7 Remain in the same house, eat-
ing and drinking whatever they provide, for the laborer deserves to be paid. Do not move
about from house to house. 8 Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat
what is set before you; 9 cure the
sick who are there, and say to them,
‘The kingdom of God has come near
to you.’ 10 But whenever you enter a
town and they do not welcome you,
go out into its streets and
say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your town
that clings to our feet, we wipe off in
protest against you. Yet know this:
the kingdom of God has come near.’
12 I tell you, on that day it will be
more tolerable for Sodom than for
that town.

It is our pleasure to introduce to
you a new team of nursery care
providers for our worship services
on Sunday mornings.
Rachelle Brunet is our Nursery
Coordinator. She lives locally and
has many years of childcare expe-
rience. She is a mother of two,
and a trained medical assistant.
Rachelle will be overseeing the
nursery ministry.
Please help us also welcome Ivy Gratier and Krystal Church as are
our new nursery attendants. Ivy just graduated from Kent Meridian
High School, and Krystal Church is a graduate of Auburn Moun-
tainview High School. Both attendants live locally, have childcare
experience, describe themselves as good multi-taskers, and are
important members of our new team.
All care providers have been trained and have Washington State
Patrol Background checks on file.
