Members of EdenUnited Church startedan informal food bank.
The program continuously grows, with more people needing foodand more people donating.
Our HistoryIt all began when a few members of EdenUnited Church noticed that there were hungryfamilies in the church and surrounding neigh-bourhood. In response they started an informalfood bank. Since then Eden has continued toevolve and change to respond to the needs ofthe community it serves.

Timeline
Our MissionEden Food for Change is committed to increasing access to good food in a dignified manner, developing food skills to encourage healthy eating and empowering the community through education, outreach and advocacy.
We continue to adapt to meet the needs of our community. Moving away from the traditional foodbank model of food collection and distribution, we have adopted a community food centre model. Our goal is to better respond to the needs of hungry families by taking a more relational, long-termand sustainable approach.
This change encompasses our desire to:• help provide good food for hungry people,
• be a place for our entire community to access nutritious food and food skills, and
• to provide opportunities to learn more about healthy eating.

4Eden Food for Change
Eden Food for Change! Last year we officially changed our nameto better reflect all the internal changes that have been happeningin our organization over the past few years. These changes meantgrowth, better service and stronger support from our community.
In 2015 when we served more than 400 families a month, 40% ofwhat they went home with was fresh food. Our Food Bank memberscontinue to receive advocacy support and a sense of communityas well as access to other community service organizations.
Our Learning Kitchen saw 215 participants gain nutritional education and cooking skills so they can prepare healthier meals athome, even with a limited budget. We also hosted 53 corporate& community groups who prepared, cooked and portioned12,093 servings of food for our Food Bank members.
In our Fresh Produce Box program, we opened five new pick-upsites to better serve the community and ensure that affordable, fresh fruits and vegetables are more accessible for more people. On average we saw around 400 boxes sold every single week!
This was also the first year for our Farmers’ Market which providedpeople in northwest Mississauga better access to locally grown food.
Through all of these programs we are serving thousands of peoplebut at the end of the day we want every individual to know thatthey are important. Recently, someone wrote to us saying “I walkedthrough the doors with so much fear and anxiety and returnedhome feeling reassured that I could put those feelings to rest.”
That is why we are here – to help people who are hungry put someof those fears and anxiety to rest – and to do it with compassionand dignity.

The Learning Kitchen Works to Serve the Needsof the Eden Community……by providing the opportunity to people fromall walks of life the ability to improve their practical healthy cooking skills.
Our kitchen provides cooking courses for FoodBank members, employment training, and mealproduction. We also share our commercialkitchen with local organizations.

Finding an Oasis
Like many who walk through a food bank’sdoors, Sheila’s need for this kind of help wasunexpected. In fact, Sheila states that “Fiveyears ago, you would have described me assomeone who had her act together – in fact, someone who lived a pretty remarkable life.”
This was a woman who was well recognizedfor her career in international development, served on community boards and even madesuccessful pitches to the Canadian government. But as many people who use the Food Bank atEden will tell you, ‘stuff happens’.
Sheila’s husband was diagnosed with a seriousmental illness, one that caused him to commit actsthat cost him his job and landed him jail in a highprofile manner. Sheila’s own job was lost becauseher association with her husband was deemedtoo risky to the reputation of her employer.
While her husband was in jail, Sheila was unemployed while trying to care for the couple’sseven-year-old daughter – while dealing with thefeeling of shame and the reality of no income.EI and savings were quickly diminished, andthe jobs that Sheila could access were ones thatwould require international traveling or movingoverseas, which wasn’t an option for a womanwho was caring for a child by herself.
“Poverty is exhausting, stressful and isolating. You are constantly making impossible decisions– when there is not enough money to keep thehydro on AND the water on – what do you do?I was always trying to figure out how to keepmy chin above water – and most of the time itdidn’t work.”
During this time, the social worker assigned toSheila’s husband, came to visit and asked thepractical questions about bills and food. It wasthis same woman that suggested Sheila visit theFood Bank at Eden.
“It took another month – and both an emptyfridge and an empty bank account, before Iwas able to summon the courage to go,” Sheilashares. “I was treated and seen as a person.Somehow Eden manages to acknowledge theirclient’s humanity and that is a phenomenal gift.I DID feel extraordinary shame, but that hadnothing to do with the Food Bank staff. It hadonly to do with me. Food banks were for thosewho had failed in life, or people whom life hadfailed…It had always been my job to care forthem – I couldn’t possibly be a client. But I was.”
The Food Bank at Eden allowed Sheila to putfood on the table for her and her daughter.Amongst a series of struggles, it did “ensurethat my daughter was never hungry. It did allowme to turn the furnace on the in winter and itdid offer a safe place to come where I could betransparent and respected.”
Like the majority of people who use the FoodBank at Eden, Sheila’s circumstances changed. Her husband came home and was able to findemployment. She found a job that started aspart-time and is now at full-time. And once shewas able, Sheila’s relationship with Eden changedfrom someone who came to use the Food Bank,to one who volunteered serving others there. “I’mstill more fragile than I was and far less sure ofmyself,” Sheila reveals. “But, I’m also kinderand more compassionate, thanks in part to theoasis I was able to visit and use every month.“
Poverty is exhausting,stressful and isolating.
