Last Sunday morning very early there was a lot of radio traffic over the

Bushfires NT network about what seemed to be a small wildfire at Berry

Springs. Knowing the area and all the gamba grass in that country it was no

real surprise to have that small wildfire become a major event with the

Territory Wildlife Park and Berry Springs Nature Park evacuated and closed,

both being downwind of the fire and under potential threat.

St John volunteers were there, albeit in different uniforms. Sue-Ellen Skinner

of Humpty Doo Division was there as crew on the Lambells Lagoon Medium

Attack Vehicle and later on traffic control at the Cox Peninsular & Hopewell

Roads junction.

I had gone along with my camera for the opportunity to take photos without

having to worry about fire fighting – big mistake. I ended up running a drip

torch and on the back of a Grass Fire Unit (GFU) manning a fire hose for the

rest of the day, at wildfires south of Batchelor on Monday, back there Tuesday

for the mop up and currently have a GFU parked outside my back door.

Humpty Doo – Greg Payne

Humpty Doo have been quite busy over the last

couple of weeks looking after the Robbie Robbins

Rodeo where Warren Purse's son, Terry, took out a

trophy for hanging onto a bull longer than the others

in his class. His winning ride happened 5 minutes after

we patched up his head laceration.

Palmerston Adults and Humpty Doo looked after the

Gymnastic Championships. Karina and I had a couple

of Darwin cadets who were very well behaved and

enjoyed themselves.

Darcy, Emily, Yasmin & Karina

Prior to the Gymnastics, Karina and I attended the

Darwin Runners Club 10Km road race at Lake

Alexander.

Karina also attended the Drags on the previous Friday

evening and has the pictures to prove it.

I hear Lee, Angie (Palmerston) and Barbara have been

creating OB12 records (numbers of) at the BMX in

Palmerston. Lee thought it a bit improper that the

responding ambo to an abdo addressed her as

“mum”.

Of late, whenever I have needed a hand Karina was

available; it is good to have so much youthful energy

at hand. We did two days at Adelaide River with the

help of Batchelor Division, at the 2 day 180Km

Boulerdash Motorcycle Enduro.

We must have been so well prepared that we had to

fight for two OB12's over the weekend with about 70

riders taking part. It was hot and we listened to the

Grand Final of the AFL without interruption.

Special thanks to Batchelor with Bruce, Russell, Ros

and >(Jan?)>> for giving us a bit of a sleep in. On the

way back we were asked by comms to detour via

Batchelor to pick up some equipment left over from a

previous job.

We visited Christine and Geraldine at Mindil for tea

before heading back to Humpty Doo and sleep.

Kit list subcommittee - Brian Ch'ng, Territory Nursing Officer

At a recent meeting it was decided that a

subcommittee would be formed to help develop and

choose a new standard first aid kit and kit list that

will be slowly phased into the volunteer service. I

have been appointed to chair this committee and to

ensure we obtain the best kit and devise the best

content list possible we would like to have the

opinions of a cross section of members from divisional

level right up to Territory Staff Officers. Should you

want to participate in this please indicate your

interest by emailing [email protected] We

would like to have representation from all centres and

regions across the territory. Meetings and

correspondence will take place via email with the odd

phone conference call where necessary.

This is your chance to have a say in the kits and their

contents so please voice your opinion.

Cellarbrations Sports Charity Lunch

We would like to give our sincere thanks to David Bruhn, Promotions Manager / Group Co-Ordinator Independent

Brands Australia – NT and Amy Picone, Business Development Manager, Australian Liquor Marketers for choosing St

John Ambulance Volunteers as the recipients of money raised at the Sports Charity Lunch. Special guests at the

lunch were former test cricketer, Darren Lehmann and AFL high flyer, Russell Robertson. The lunch and auction of

sporting memorabilia raised over $20,000 for the volunteers.

Below is an email from David Bruhn

thanking the many people involved in

making the event such a success.

This is just a quick note to all, to say

a big THANK YOU for your help,

support and participation in the

inaugural SPORTS CHARITY LUNCH

2009.

I believe the day was a great success,

raising over $20,000 for the St John

Ambulance Volunteers NT!

A lot of work was put into the day to pull it all

together in just over 3 weeks and it would not

have been possible if it wasn't for the great

sponsors, the support of The Bottle-O and

Cellarbrations stores, and the many people that

worked hard in various areas to make the event a

success.

I would like also to make a special mention of

some key people for their huge efforts involved

with this event

Amy Picone from The Bottle-O and Cellarbrations

team for her work in helping arrange the function

and ensuring smoothing sailing on the day

The Darwin Convention Centre team for their

superb effort with great food, service and setting

The Lab Creative team who arranged the

entertainment as hosted Brad Elliot on the day,

they were very professional to deal with in all the

lead up work and the performances yesterday

were fantastic and I would highly recommend The

Lab Creative for any entertainment / function

needs.

We fully intend to run this as an annual event and

make it bigger and better next year!

Cheers to all for a great day!

David Bruhn.
