3 January 2020 Letter to Parents No. 007/ 2020 Dear Parents/Guardians, Happy New Year and Welcome Back!
2020 is a special year for all of us at Huamin Primary School. We begin the school year at our upgraded site and welcome the youngest addition to the Huamin family, the pre-schoolers in the MOE Kindergarten (MK).
In Huamin, the child is central to everything we do. Our programmes and policies are designed to meet the varied needs and interests of our students. Each child is important to us as we foster him to be a happy learner and help realise his potential. This is best reflected in the school’s philosophy that “Every child can and wants to learn”.
The school has successfully transited to our Interdisciplinary Applied Learning Programme (ALP) with our focus on Education in Sustainable Development. The ALP serves to connect classroom learning with real-life applications and encourage our students to creatively apply concepts to solve authentic problems. It focuses on evoking curiosity in learning, developing inventive thinking and encouraging a dare-to-try spirit. The ALP also promises exciting international platforms through the overseas cultural immersion programmes and school visits. We will endeavour to nurture in our students a global perspective and a deeper appreciation of the issues affecting our community. We will continue to harness the collaboration with our key partners and explore new ones with industries or other institutions that share the same goals and purpose.

d. Increasing Parents' Awareness on Anti-Idling Engine Regulations Based on the media advisory released by National Environmental Agency (NEA) on 19 November 2014, parents/guardians who are waiting to pick up their children from school is one of the top four reasons why engines are left idle while the vehicle is stationary. We would like to remind parents/legal guardians to switch off your car engines while waiting to pick your children up from school. Our support staff shall be on duty to remind you whenever they see your car engines left idle while waiting for your children. We seek your full co-operation in this aspect. We would like all parents/legal guardians to be more aware of the anti-idling engine regulations and do our part to comply with them. Let us continue to work together to safeguard public health for our students and loved ones. e. NO Right turn from 7.00am to 7.30am
As communicated on 20 and 23 December 2019, there is a right turn restriction that had taken effect from 2 January 2020. With the implementation of this restriction, parents are only able to exit via a left turn from the HDB access road into Yishun Avenue 11 during the morning school peak hours (i.e. from 7.00 to 7.30a.m.). The implementation of this right-turn restriction was approved by LTA upon completion of the Traffic Impact Assessment (TIA) exercise which had been commissioned by MOE in 2017 with the PERI Upgrading of Huamin Primary School. The intent was to ensure an overall efficient and smooth traffic flow

Students from other levels should bring back their own working thermometers and pass it to their respective Form Teachers before then. 4) Update of Individual Student Details Your child’s Form teachers will be distributing the Individual Student Details form on 13 January 2020 to all students. Please provide the necessary update and changes on the particulars of your child/ward including his/her medical condition/s (if any). Parents/Legal Guardians are to complete and sign the form as well as provide the supporting medical document from the attending doctor.
5) Photo-taking Session for P1 and P6 Students Please be informed that the Photo-Taking session for P1 and P6 students for the School Smart Card (EZ-link card) for 2020 has been scheduled by Transitlink to be conducted on 22 January 2020 (Wednesday) from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Please ensure your child/ward comes to school neatly dressed in his/her full school uniform that morning. 6) Student Handbook 2020 Your child/ward will need to purchase a copy of the Student Handbook 2020. 10) 2020 MOE Financial Assistance Scheme (MOE FAS) Application The school distributed the MOE Financial Assistance Scheme (MOE FAS) leaflets in October 2019 to all Singaporean students. The leaflet in four languages show the criteria, benefits and application procedure of MOE FAS for 2020. For students who wish to apply for financial assistance from MOE in 2020, application forms are available from the Admin Centre. Please approach any of our Admin staff for further assistance. 11) Use of Telephone at the Admin Centre The school will only allow students to use the telephone at the Admin Centre during curriculum time. Students will need to obtain permission from their Form Teachers before using the telephone. During recess time, before and after school hours, students are to use the public telephones available within the school premises. Parents/Legal Guardians are advised to provide some loose change (coins) for their child/ward in the event he/she needs to use the public telephone. We are restricting the use of the telephone at the Admin Centre to align to the school’s original intention of allowing students the use of the telephone for emergency and important purposes only. We seek the cooperation and understanding of parents/legal guardians on this matter. 12) Instilling a Stronger Sense of Responsibility and Ownership - Requests to Pass Items and Messages to Students is Strongly Discouraged Since 2 January 2019, the school had implemented a new practice to instil a stronger sense of responsibility and ownership amongst our students. To this end, we strongly discourage all parents/guardians from passing items and non-emergency messages to the students during school operational hours. Students will need to learn to pack and prepare their school bags properly each day and remember to bring their personal items such as water bottles, pencil cases, money or homework instead of relying on their parents or caregivers to bring them to school on their behalf whenever they forget to do so.

Students should also face the necessary inconvenience of not having these personal items in school on that day so that they can learn from their experience. The school will also discourage requests to pass non-emergency messages to students as these requests could cause disruption to lessons. We encourage you to communicate such messages to your child/ward before he/she reaches school. We sincerely seek all parents’ support to work hand-in-hand with us in our endeavor to instill stronger discipline and ownership in our Huaminites. Rest assured that teachers will exercise due patience with all students, especially our Primary One and Primary Two students due to their younger age. We seek your understanding that the school security personnel and admin office staff will be instructed to adhere to this school practice.
13) Overseas Leave During Term Time Please be reminded that requests for overseas leave during term time will not be granted except on compassionate grounds. However, should parents/legal guardians insist on taking their child/ward abroad, you must inform the school in writing and note that no additional or make-up lesson will be conducted for lessons missed. Please address the letter to the Principal citing the reason for the request and submit it to the Form Teacher at least 3 days before departure from the country. 14) Regular Attendance and Late-coming As part of our school’s strong emphasis on character-building, Huamin Primary School believes that every student should be responsible and should report to school regularly and punctually. Late-coming and truancy are not allowed. Your child/ward is considered late when they arrive after 7.25 a.m. This habit of making the effort to be in school regularly and on time helps to cultivate a strong sense of responsibility in our students. When they are late, students also do miss out on valuable curriculum time where learning takes place.

Hence, please nurture in your child/ward the good habit of sleeping early every night and waking up on time. Should your child/ward be absent from school due to medical reasons, you must submit an official document i.e. Medical certificate or letters stating the reason to the Form Teachers when your child/ward returns to school. In order to help our students be more aware of the time, the school has also installed 2 digital clocks besides the linkway, next to the canteen and the side gate. This would help students keep track of the time as they walk into the school. Kindly take note that latecomers will not be able to proceed to the classroom for flag-raising until the ceremony is over. Should Huaminites be late for school, a verbal warning will be given for first-time and second-time offenders. For subsequent late-coming offences, they will have to engage in a written reflection activity. Parents/Legal Guardians will also be informed. There will be more serious consequences for truancy. We seek your support in this as the school firmly believes that regular attendance and punctuality helps build a person's strong character for future endeavours. 15) Ensuring that Your Child/Ward is Ready for the New School Term We would like to remind all parents/legal guardians to help ensure that our Huaminites are well-prepared for the new school year. Appropriate hair-styles, shoes and attire for school are to be adhered to strictly. You can also refer to the Student Handbook for more information on the school rules and regulation. It is important to set the right tone at the beginning of the school year. Build on your child’s/ward’s excitement and motivation to spur them to set realistic targets for themselves and put aside some routines at home to support them in this endeavour. You will also be receiving an introductory letter dated 06 January 2020 from your child’s/ward’s Form Teacher for the year and we would like to hear your response in writing, should you have any important information about your child/ward with the Form Teacher. Please submit your response by Friday, 10 January 2020.

Parenting Tips Helping your child manage transitions School has started again! For children, it can either be an exciting time for them to go back to school and meet up with their friends or it can be an anxiety-inducing experience as they try to cope with the routines and expectations associated with returning to school. While children are generally resilient and will be able to adapt to the transition, parents can still play a supporting role to ensure a smoother transition period and a happier morning routine prior to coming to school.
a. Establish routines
Routines are important, particularly for young children. It provides
stability and certainty in a child’s life thus providing a safe environment
for a child to explore and learn. These routines may include time to go
to sleep, time for bed, meal times as well time set aside for homework
or play. For instance, you may want your child to sleep by a particular
time (i.e. 9 p.m.) so that he has ample rest, and wake up and be ready
by a specific time so that he does not have to rush to school to avoid
being late. Routines also ensure that your child’s basic needs are being
met and that he does not spend time disproportionately on other
activities such as a child refusing to take his lunch as he wants to
spend time on watching videos.
b. Communicate clear expectations
As a member of the household, you will have expectations on your
child. These expectations will include the routines that you may have
thought of earlier as well as other expectations such as general
behaviour in school and at home. Children may not always know what
parents expect from there. So, do be explicit and clear when you
communicate your expectations. For example, instead of telling your
child, “Please behave in class”, you may want to change it to “Please
use respectful words to your friends and teachers” or “Please listen to
your teachers and follow their instructions”. When communicating your
expectations to your child, it does not have to be a one-way

Huamin Primary School
communication. Your child should also be able to voice out his
concerns and be able to negotiate his expectations as well.
c. Express interest in your child’s school experience
Often, children are keen to share their experiences. They want to be
heard and that their experiences matter to their parents. Do show
interest in what your child is experiencing in school. Ask beyond what
your child has learnt academically in school and instead focus on other
skills such as his interactions with his peers and teachers, how he
spends his recess or lunch break and some of the surprising things or
challenges that he encountered while in school.
Health Tips Cook with Your Children
a. Getting your children involved in cooking is a great way to boost their “nutritional know how”, introduces them to explore new food, gives them skills, increases confidence, and a way to have fun and enjoy the many benefits of creating and eating healthy food!
b. Involve your children in making dinner each day. c. Pick a recipe and talk with them about what is a healthy ingredient. d. Teach children to read food labels and see what is really inside their
food by doing a scavenger hunt in the cupboards. e. When children help create a meal, they often feel very proud and
excited to taste it. f. Plan the week's meals with the help of your children. g. Spend quality family time together by cooking together.
