Living Your Passions WorkshopCertified Passion Test facilitator, Dan

Hanneman, will help people tap into deeplyheld passions and map out how to fulfill them,at the Center for Spiritual Evolution, 204Spring Street, Cary, in a workshop, on July 19,from 12 noon til 3 p.m.

With an extensive background as a profes-sional counselor and certified hypnotherapistwith combined business and professionalbackgrounds in spiritual life coaching, meta-physics, Religious Science healing, hypnosis, psychology, motivational techniques, and per-sonal/business development systems, Han-neman is the founder and CEO of BlockBustYour Path. He says, “to be happy and fulfilledat the deepest part of being, the key is living alife favoring our deepest passions. Everyone’sunique passions are the touchstones to master-ing personal destiny. By following them, youare led to the center of your soul. Joy, fulfill-ment, and prosperity awaits everyone there.”

According to a Harris Interactive study, only 20% of working Americans are passion-ate about what they do. That means 80% areunfulfilled, unsatisfied, even unhappy. It’stime to turn those statistics on their head, sayNew York Times bestselling authors of ThePassion Test, Chris Attwood and Janet BrayAttwood. “In this global economy, peoplecan’t afford to do things they’re not passionateabout, because they’ll lose their jobs,” saysJanet Bray Attwood. “In a study of over 300enduringly successful people, the one com-mon characteristic of all of them was that theyknew their passions and they made choicesbased on them. Success today depends onknowing and following one’s passions.”

Jack Canfield, author of Conversations withGod, made highly significant changes in hislife on two occasions through the Passion Testprocess. According to Hanneman, “when youconsistently follow the system there is nothingthat will stop you from your greatest aspira-tions and dreams.”

The Living Your Passions workshop firstpinpoints five core passions which offer cluesto every person’s unique and special role inthe world. Then markers are identified to helpone actualize the experience of core passions. The workshop includes a vision board andwriting “passion pages” for greater clarity.Participants then live more happily by practic-ing “Intention-Attention-No Tension” whilemaking clear choices which favor their pas-sions.

Suggested donation for the Living YourPassions workshop is $30.

Rev. Jacqueline Triche AtkinsWhat Are You Hearing?REV. JACQUELINE TRICHE ATKINS, J.D.Recently I viewed a movie that told the

story of an extremely gifted man who sufferedfrom the appearance of a mental illness. Thefocus was not on the illness, but on one of thesymptoms that plagued him. He heard voices, voices that were a destructive force to him. Asa young man, preparing for his career as aconcert cellist at the Juilliard School of Music, the voices first attacked him. He heard themsaying that he could not do what he wasattempting, that he was not the right color, andthat only these voices could protect him. These voices continued throughout his lifeand seemed to be the loudest when the manwas in closed spaces. Unfortunately, the manwas not able to obtain assistance, medical orotherwise, to help him to shut down the voic-es or to differentiate the voices from his “RealVoice,” “the still small voice.”

The story is a metaphor for what often hap-pens with us. Though not subject to a mentalillness experience, we often find ourselves ina seemingly similar situation. We hear voicesthat are a destructive force in our life experi-ences. While we may not allow “our voices”to put us on the street and into a homelessstate of existence, as the movie character did,we do allow “our voices” to shut us down andto block so many of our blessings. “Our voic-es” become our guiding truth. They createsuch a dissonance that we do not hear “the stillsmall voice” any longer. We become blind towhat we really are, the image, likeness ofGod. As time goes on, we allow the destruc-tive voices that have now become a part of ourconsciousness to toss us between the past andthe future, such that the present goes unno-ticed. They place us in a state of regret of whathas occurred and in a state of fear of what’s tocome! Our giving away the joy of the “Now”becomes a habit. This movie reminded methat we must consciously practice shifting ourfocus so that we hear only “the still smallvoice,” the voice of our Real Self. If we do so,we will avoid what Eckhart Tolle wrote,“Many people live with a tormentor in theirhead that continuously attacks and punishesthem and drains them of vital energy.” Checkon yourself. Are you living with destructivevoices, incessant thoughts and chatter in yourmind, causing you to experience pain andblocking your blessing?

Rev. Helice GreeneThe Soul Of America

BY REV. HELICE GREENEThe Soul of America is the aggregate – the

sum total of the souls of each one of us, as wecontribute our good to the overall good. Weare one nation under God. We are a union. Wehave a unity of purpose. We have a commonidealism.

The American founders were intellectualcitizens of the Age of Enlightenment. Theyembodied the ideals of an extraordinary timein history. Their philosophical vision wasexpressed in the Declaration of Independenceand their political genius in the Constitution. The balance of these along with courage andvision created a doorway to freedom. We areall heirs of the Age of Enlightenment. Ourthinking, our commitment to freedom, princi-ples and values continue to shape our nationand fulfill our legacy.

These documents are like ancient tablets onwhich are inscribed the living truths that canonly set us free when we realize true freedomis a gift of our Creator. We are divinely creat-ed spiritual beings placed on earth for the pur-pose of creating the good, the true, and thebeautiful. This goal, when embraced, is acompelling force motivating us to higher andloftier heights.

Never has there been a time in our historywhen it was more imperative for each individ-ual to think for him or herself. The words ofH. Emilie Cady in her classic book, LessonsIn Truth, poses the timeless question....Bondage or Liberty, Which? All suffering isthe result of the belief that we are in bondageto the things and circumstances of the world. The ultimate aim of every individual is tocome into the consciousness of the InfinitePresence indwelling.

There are within each of us God-given tal-ents to respond to a world that is constantlychanging and challenging our freedom.Spiritual law would have us serve each otherrather than compete with each other, blesseach other rather than judge or condemn eachother, and place our primary attention of theGreat Commandment … Love one another.Jesus said: “Ye shall know the Truth and theTruth shall set you free.”

Kristine GenneroSomething To Think About

From Ernest Holmes, “Science of Mind”Jesus said: “If ye have faith as a grain of

mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, remove hence to yonder place, and it shallremove; and nothing shall be impossible untoyou.” Faith is centered in, and co-operateswith, Divine Mind.

Because we fail to realize that Principle isnot bound by precedent, we limit our faith tothat which has already been accomplished, and few “miracles” result. When, throughintuition, faith finds its proper place underDivine Law, there are no limitations, and whatare called miraculous results follow.

If we are to have an active faith — the faithof God instead of merely a faith in God — ourthought must be centered in Universal Mind.We are convinced that under Divine Law allthings are possible, if we only believe, andwork in conformity with the principles of thatLaw. Such a faith does not spring full-orbedinto being, but grows by knowledge and expe-rience. No matter what the outside appear-ance, we must cling steadfastly to the knowl-edge that God is good, and God is all, under-neath, above and round about. Thus we shallbe able to say, with conviction: “I know inwhom I have believed...”

Effective mental treatment is propelled by aconsciousness of love and a realization thatthe Creative Spirit is always at work. It is thenature of the Creative Power to take form, andit is the nature of man to use It. The work iseffective because the Law is always in opera-tion.

Affirmation by Rev. Michael C. Rann:“Thank you God, I have the faith and myfaith in the Law makes my dreams real.Thank you God and so it is!”

Detox Becoming MainstreamInterest in detoxification, the process of rid-

ding the body of impurities, is going fromtrend to mainstream as a way to lose weight, reduce the signs of aging, increase energy, restore spiritual well-being, relieve allergiesand asthma and even relieve such chronic dis-eases as diabetes and arthritis. Colonics detoxdiets, fasting and cleansing are terms that areheard more and more in the media and in con-versation.

Sorokie, who is also the author of GutWisdom: Understanding and Improving YourDigestive Health (Career Press), explains,“When the colon is congested with stagnantwastes, poisons back up into the systems ofthe body. As a result, they pollute the innerenvironment. This is called autointoxication. All of the body’s tissues are affected byautointoxication. When the cells of the bodiestissues become toxic, the ‘wisdom’ of thebody will retain water to dilute the toxin, hence, extra water weight,” she said.

Sorokie points out that colonics are just thefirst step in detoxifying the body. A thoroughdetox is systemic cleanse which involves dietmodification, herbal supplements andcolonics in combination to assist in detoxify-ing the liver, gall, small and large intestines.

According to Sorokie, “the detox trend isnot new. Spiritual leaders such as Jesus,Moses and Krishna preached the wonders ofcleansing for clarity of the mind, body andspirit. Native Americans used it as part of theirspiritual practice to purify the body as a livingtemple of God. Throughout the world today, health clinics and health-oriented spas imple-ment various cleanses and fasts, thus success-fully treating individuals from weight loss tocancer,” said Sorokie.

For those who wish to take detoxificationfurther than colonics, Sorokie has designedher own detox program called the “GutWisdom Detox” and hosts “The Gut WisdomTransformational Detox,” which is a series ofdetox classes designed to take someonethrough the complete detoxification process.Sorokies’, “Gut Wisdom TransformationalDetox” is held once a week over the course ofa month at Partners in Wellness, her holistichealth care center in Chicago’s Lincoln Parkneighborhood.

Sorokie explains that a wealth of benefitsoften occur as a result of “a detox.” Oftenpeople will lose weight, clear up skin prob-lems, and experience an increase of energyand the elimination of a variety of gut prob-lems like gas, bloat, constipation and inflam-matory bowel disease. She continued, “Adetox can serve as a “vacation for your gut”and can create a powerful shift in your life. Itrelieves us from the irritants, wastes, and toxicfoods. When our bodies are overloaded withtoxins, our organ functions can get overlystressed. As a result, good immune and elimi-native functions can get inhibited. We saw thisdemonstrated in the documentary film, “SuperSize Me” (where film maker MorganSpurlock ate nothing but fast food for amonth) which proved that consumption of

toxic foods can cause severe damage to manyof the body’s organs including the heart andthe liver.”

According to Sorokie, a toxin is a substancethat creates irritating, harmful and potentiallydamaging effects in the body. She explained,“Toxins will remain in our body tissue andorgans until they are removed. A cleanse (ordetox) is a “mover.” Environmental toxinssuch as pesticides, preservatives and pollutionhave burdened our bodies with hazardouswaste material. Medications have altered ourgut’s vital bacteria balance, causing irradiatedstomach and intestinal wall linings. Stress hastightened our gut into knots and spasms aswell as left behind degenerative chemicalwaste from the release of the stress fightinghormones. The walls of our colon can becomecoated with layers of hardened waste and rub-bery mucus from years of improper eating ofrefined, fiberless sugary foods.”

In her book, Gut Wisdom, Sorokie says thatthe accumulation all of these toxins can liter-ally create a toxic waste site within our bodies. She continued, “What does not get eliminatedby our digestive tracts, gets recirculated.Toxins become stored in our fatty tissue andthat they can accumulate for years. This cancontribute to various autoimmune dysfunc-tions, such as chronic fatigue and fibromyal-gia, as well as a myriad of other physical andemotional imbalances. All of these long heldtoxins can finally be eliminated during adetox. It can literally transform a person, andassist them back to good health and to theirproper weight.”

Rev. Robert YarbroughLife Of MeBY REV. BOBBY

For the life of me I cannot find the “nega-tive” that I hear so much about in NewThought and Metaphysical Churches. “Thereis only One Presence and One Power in theUniverse, God the good omnipotent.” Who’szooming who?

A Rev. Bobby quote from 1999: “It is morethan a notion to allow this TRUTH to work inour life instead of just learning enough toespouse it.” There are some things, for the lifeof me, I just can’t get to. We can all get along, but if you start talking New Thought orMetaphysical and certain words come out ofyour mouth, I’m going to take a couple ofsteps back, before I run, to make sure youcan’t grab me. Compromise yourself if youwant. It is your free will and choice. I can usemine to do something different.

The Greek for disciple – matheteuo, pho-netically - math-ayt-yoo’o – means to enrollas a scholar. Disciple is also a derivative of theword discipline. Using the movie, JerryMaguire to draw an analogy, “Show me thediscipline!” Scholar, please.

I’ve never been able to do anything but callit like I see it. I am blessed to have my friends, but by no means does that mean that it doesn’tget hairy in those relationships sometimes. Ipractice this TRUTH the way that I practice itfor one reason and one reason alone. It is forthe life of me. Visit www.revbobby.com.

Revs. Mike Gerdes & Margo RuarkPeace Center Opens

The Peace Center joyfully announces it isnow open for business at 6833 Stanley Avenuein Berwyn’s historic Depot District. “We are awelcoming place that honors all paths topeace, to spirituality, and the connection of allpeople,” says Mike Gerdes, Director. “Weprovide tools for peaceful living that helpmake the world a better place.”

The Peace Center is a gift shop, book store, and coffee shop that offers unique hard to finditems that aid in the personal journey ofpeacemaking. “We also offer classes in peaceskills, and healing of personal and interper-sonal conflict.” “Berwyn needs the PeaceCenter,” Gerdes says, “and it is thrilling to bepart of the revival of the city. With foreclo-sures right and left and people losing theirjobs, there is a clear invitation to reach out tothose who could use some spiritual supportregardless of religious affiliation. All thesechallenges can be effectively addressedthrough a consciousness of peace.”

Berwyn has an interesting demographicwith 40% of the population identifying asCatholic and 20% consider themselves “spiri-tual but not religious.” There is great opportu-nity to bring both groups together and sharepeace skills such as nonviolent communica-tions, sacred dance, prayer, meditation andspiritual healing,” says Gerdes. “An importantdistinction is that The Peace Center promotesanything pro-peace. We are not about anti-war. We are not anti-anything,” says Gerdes. He reports that Mother Teresa once told ayoung man that she would not come to hisanti-war rally, but she added “Let me knowwhen the peace rally is and I’ll be sure to bethere.”

With the 50th anniversary of the PeaceSymbol, the timing couldn’t be better foropening of The Peace Center. “Peace is a fash-ion statement that never goes out of style!”says Gerdes. All are welcome to peruse ThePeace Center’s gift shop, have a cup of fairtrade organic coffee, and perhaps leave withT-shirts, mugs, bumper stickers, and otheritems that allow you to be the messenger ofpeace wherever you go. “Compassion is theradicalism of our time.” says the Dalai Lama.We can start right here in Berwyn.

Rev. Ken WilliamsonLet Us Commence

BY REV. KEN WILLIAMSONGraduating from high school and finishing

something that no one in my immediate fami-ly had done, I thought the commencement cer-emony was about my accomplishments, andso did most of my classmates. In a sense, twothings were transpiring simultaneously. Wewere completing something, and it was wor-thy of acknowledgement. Just as we celebratewhat has been achieved by our church’s grad-uating senior.

We also know that we have prepared our-selves for a beginning. We are like the treesplanted by the river mentioned in the abovequote. What allows larger trees to tumble istheir drying out at the root. So we continue tofeed and nourish our roots in spirit so that wewill not be moved.

There is a process we can engage that willaide in our development and unfoldmenttoward commencement, toward beginning.First, we acknowledge that we have arrived ata gateway in our lives. It is the frontierbetween Heaven and the mundane. We con-front here what is hidden in ourselves - thatwhich needs to be examined before we takesteps to our success. Then we review the past, the learning and joys, the victories and sor-rows. We observe it all, bless it all, and releaseit all. It is in letting go of it all that we reclaimour power. Now we commence. And the firstact I invite you to commit is to pray for all thechildren.

“He will be like a tree firmly planted bystreams of water, Which yields its fruit in itsseason And its leaf does not wither; And inwhatever he does, he prospers.” -Pslam 1:3

“People were bringing little children toJesus to have him touch them, but the disci-ples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, hewas indignant. He said to them, “Let the lit-tle children come to me, and do not hinderthem, for the kingdom of God belongs tosuch as these. I tell you the truth, anyonewho will not receive the kingdom of God likea little child will never enter it.” And he tookthe children in his arms, put his hands onthem and blessed them.” Matthew 10:13-16

Although there are currently no DivineScience Churches in the Chicagoland area,Divine Science was one of the earliest teach-ings in New Thought. The first Divine Scienceservice was held by Nona Brooks on January1, 1899.

In 1919, Nona Brooks went on to foundwhat subsequently became the First Church ofReligious Science in Chicago. Although someof the very early history of the church was notwritten down, we do know that one of its earlyministers was Dr. Claudine Whitaker. She wasoriginally an ordained Episcopal Deaconessliving in New York. While there, she beganattending services of Emmet Fox who, for 20years as pastor of the First Church of DivineScience in New York spoke to thousands ofpeople every Wednesday evening.

Dr. Whitaker became so taken with theideas she heard from Emmet Fox that shemoved to Denver where she studied for fouryears with Dr. Harvey Hardman at the DivineScience College. She was ordained by NonaBrooks and, at Dr. Brooks’ request, moved toChicago sometime in the 1940’s to take overthe ministry of First Chicago Church. Shebecame active in and served on the board ofThe International New Thought Alliance(INTA). She was introduced to ReligiousScience by Dr. Robert Bitzer, then president ofINTA, and Dr. Raymond Charles Barker andDr. Ernest Holmes, founder of ReligiousScience. In 1957, she brought First Churchinto the International Association of ReligiousScience Churches, known today as Inter-national Centers for Spiritual Living.

One of Dr. Hardman’s subsequent studentswas Dr. Carleton Whitehead. Dr. Hardmanrecommended Dr. Whitehead to Dr. ErnestHolmes who, in turn, sent him to Monterey,California to establish the Monterey Churchof Religious Science. In 1969, when Dr.Whitaker retired here in Chicago, she recom-mended Dr. Whitehead as her replacement.

90 years ago a legend was born! FirstChurch of Religious Science started 90 yearsago this July, by Rev. Dr. Claudine Whitakerand Nona Brooks who has become a legend inthe New Thought World, and about 40 yearsago Dr. Carleton Whitehead took over.

20 years later, after being president ofGamzo Advertising, Rev. Rann who studiedwith Dr. Whitaker and Dr. Whitehead, tookover. In 1995, Rev. Rann asked KristineGennero, R.Sc.P., with an excellent back-ground in finance, to join his team as generalmanager. Corwin Marbly, Jr. joined the teamin 2001 and is in charge of day to day opera-tions. In 2006, Rev. Rann appointed CynthiaL. Morson as assistant minister, with a 20 yearhistory as investigator for the State of Illinois. She has two wonderful daughters who cometo church every Sunday and one of her daugh-ters, Shavon (Kizzy) heads up the youth pro-gram. Rann says it’s all about people, likeChauncey Moore, President and AnnetteMoore, Chairman of the Pastoral CareCommittee. First Church continues to makeits mark on Chicago.

The Harmony Line gives callers a new spir-itual motivating short lesson each day. Callersnow average over 500 a month. New pro-grams are seen on television 8 times eachmonth on channel 36. In past issues of MetaMonthly, First Church has announced the“Prosperity Club” headed by KristineGennero, R.Sc.P. and the “Love Club” headedby Rev. Cynthia, and soon will announce the“Healing Prayer Ministry” also headed byRev. Cynthia.

Thank you to all who have been part ofFirst Church. Spiritual programs have beenplanned to celebrate the 90 years.

The First Church of Religious Science inChicago is one of the oldest metaphysicalchurches in the New Thought Movement, andhas a rich and colorful background, peopledwith well-known names in New Thought.

Twenty years later, Dr. Whitehead retired,Rev. Michael C. Rann became and remainsthe pastor.

Of special interest in the history of FirstChurch is the hand-made podium, e/speciallydesigned by Dr. Hardman, which he used formany years and then bequeathed to his pro-tégé, Dr. Carleton Whitehead. Dr. Whitehead,in turn, bequeathed this special and very sym-bolic podium to his protégé, Rev. MichaelRann. On the occasion of Rev. Rann’s instal-lation as pastor of The First Church ofReligious Science, Dr. Whitehead also gavehim his personal Science of Mind textbookcontaining his many years of hand-writtenmarginal notes, inscribed “July 20, 1990.Michael. I pass the torch to you with joy, love, and great expectations. Hold it high.Carleton.”

First Church holds Sunday services at 9:30and 11:00 a.m., at Water Tower Place, in audi-torium suite 913E. Executive offices andclasses are at the same location.

Many special functions are planned for thisyear to celebrate 90 years in the “Honor andGlory of God.”

BY STEPHANIE E. WILSON-COLEMANAuthor of Is Anybody Listening? And Embracing Life’s Lessons

[email protected]

In Proverbs 15 chapter we are advised thatGod is keeping a watchful eye on evil andgood. We often misinterpret this scripture andmany others like it. To us, this encompassesonly what we do in the outer, our actions, therefore we think we have been given “a getout of jail free card” when it comes to ourthoughts. Instead of starting at the root, ourthoughts, the activity of our minds, we areblinded by our actions, not realizing that with-out thought, action would be impossible, for itis thought that fuels and ignites action. In ourminds most of us have committed more mur-ders and hurled more vicious insults thanwould be possible in the outer. And we won-der why our lives are filled with inconsistentresults.

We believe because we did not act uponthese thoughts that we are innocent and safe.Quantum physics has proven that thoughts arecreative and are made manifest or born in theouter world as our experiences. It has beenproven that we cannot hide from our thoughts;every instance of lack, limitation and illnesscan be traced back to our thoughts. It is thefunction of the Universe to grant the things wethink about, whether they are consistent withour desires or contrary to them. The Universedoes not have the ability or power to deter-mine if we are thinking thoughts that are ofthings we would like to experience, or if weare simply participating in some what-if fanta-sy. It leaves that for us to decide. It has a sim-ple purpose; manifest the things we consis-tently think about.

The only way to experience the things wecall good is through the use of our thoughts. We must learn to use our mind to think “our”thoughts instead of allowing others to planttheir thoughts into our consciousness; wemust learn to control our thoughts so our minddoes not start to think, wander and createthings to focus on without our permission. Wemust question and challenge our mind everytime we find ourselves thinking things that arecontrary to the Divine.

God is keeping a watchful eye. However,God leaves us to create through the power ofour thoughts.
