Introduction• Rome is the capital
of Italy
• It is a beautiful city full of ancient and modern buildings
• We went there to learn about its history and art
Piazza Navona
• On our first afternoon in Rome we went to a café on the Piazza Navona
• We ate ice creams
• The teachers drank cappuccinos
• There is a big fountain in the piazza
The Forum
• This was the political heart of Ancient Rome
• Ruins show where there were shops, offices, temples, and marble statues
• The Ancient Romans held chariot races at the Circus Maximus

The national museum
There are lots of ancient statues in the museum.
The Colosseum
• Now partly ruined
• A 50,000 seat stadium, built in AD 72
• The site of ancient contests between gladiators, slaves and wild animals!

Gladiators
• Gladiators fought to entertain rich Romans
• They trained in schools, called ludi
• The word gladiator comes from the Latin for sword

The Vatican
• Vatican city is an independent state in the middle of Rome
• It is the home of the Pope, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church
• The ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican was painted by Michelangelo
