Dear Our Towne Readers,

It is hard to believe that Autumn is in full swing! It seems like just

yesterday we were at the beach collecting sea shells and not having to be anywhere! In my home in castleton, we are busy scheduling academic &

activities for our daughters. Just mapping out our weeks is enough to make anyone feel tired & stressed. With that being said, we are desperately holding on to our precious family time. I know many families can relate. Finding

balance between commitments & the need for family time when we can just chill out together is a constant

struggle.

We have decided that it is ok to just say no. Letting go of the guilt of saying no is also a challenge. We can’t do it all, and, honestly, don’t want to. Sometimes the option of haning out at home & taking a break from the chaos of the world is much more important than missing out on what is going on around us.

This month we will be savoring the beautiful surroundings of our commu-nity. We are looking forward visiting local farms & spending time outside

enjoying our community. I hope you all take time to take a deep breath, go

outside & enjoy life in the moment!

I would like to welcome a few Our Towne contributors that I am excited to include in this publication. I have a sImple rule - all devIces have to be put up tIll later on In the evenIng. whIle everyone Is gettIng ready for bed, I let the kIds text theIr parents, shoot an Instragram photo, check facebook - whatever.. I know for myself that I lIke to check my emaIl and facebook before I go to bed. you have to let kIds have the some tIme on theIr devIces. once everyone Is settled Into bed I collect all the devIces agaIn tIll morn-Ing. thIs really has helped me a great deal. everyone Is happy and no textIng tIll 2 am.

It’s that time again! OKtoberfest 2012 will take place on Saturday, October 13, from

4:00p.m.-7:00p.m. The R.S.V.P. date is Octo-ber 1. In keeping with tradition, we will have silent auctions and raffles featuring wonderful prizes donated by our talented and generous local vendors. There will be a craft project, lively oompah music, and of course, excel-

lent refreshments! We are pleased to announce that the catering this year will be done by Carlucci Simons. Tickets are $30 each, and include a meal full of delicious delicacies:

spaten-marinated bratwurst, with housemade mustards, veggie sausages, assorted local

sauerkrauts, German potato salad, black for-est cookies, German chocolate cupcakes, and beverages. Each adult ticket also comes with one entry into the door prize giveaway of a

gorgeous floral centerpiece made by our very own Kinderhook Garden Club! Kids’ meals

are also available for $7, and include hot dogs, chips, dessert and cider. Tickets can be pur-chased by bringing your check to the library during operating hours. Get your ticket soon, and join the staff, trustees, and Friends of the Library in an evening of great food and great fun! All proceeds from OKtoberfest this year will benefit the 21st Century Library fund.

Ingredients 2 cups raw pumpkin seeds

1 1/2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce 1 1/2 tablespoons butter, melted

1 1/4 teaspoons seasoned salt

Directions 1. Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F (120 degrees C).

2. Rinse the pumpkin seeds and pat dry. Place them in a bowl. Add the Worcestershire sauce, melted butter and seasoned salt; stir until evenly coated. Spread out in an even layer on a baking sheet.

3. Bake for about 1 hour in the preheated oven, stirring occasionally, until crisp, dry and golden brown.

Happy AUGUST....If I am dreaming please wake me up cause the months are flying by and I have so much to tell you. This month is going to be an incredibly difficult month for me in so many ways. We are moving my daughter to Wyoming to pursue her education in Bio-Medical Sciences which will also give her the opportunity to be closer to her brother in Colorado. What an AMAZING time of year....For some reason it feels very calming and tranquil. A time where we can take a deep breath and relax. (maybe it has something to do with being an empty nester??) Whether its because of the

weather, beautiful earth-tone colors or a time of enjoying our homes, it truly is my favorite. As always we have a lot of things happening here at KRAFTS BY KIM...We were able to take a quick buying trip a

few weeks ago and actually purchased many new furniture pieces. In addition found exciting new designs and ideas to inspire and recharge our creativity. As we get ready for the months ahead remember the decorating ideas are endless...I would like to give a big WELCOME to Sandy of Happie Clothes. She has set up a little boutique of her

adorable designs in her newly designed room here at Krafts by Kim. Her energy, vision and drive is very inspirational. Just in time for the holiday season.

fOllOw this winter car care checKlist nOw tO help avOid breaKdOwns and save time and mOney!

1. Battery and Charging System – Have the battery and charging system tested by a trained technician. A fully charged battery is required to start an engine in cold weather. Make sure the battery terminals and cable ends are free from corrosion, and the connections are tight.

2. Drive Belts – Inspect the underside of accessory drive belts for cracks October is AAA Car Care month — Celebrate and save with these maintenance tips

3. or fraying. Many newer multi-rib “serpentine” belts are made of materials that do not show obvious signs of wear; replace these belts at the intervals noted in your owner’s manual.

4. Engine Hoses – Inspect cooling system hoses for leaks, cracks or loose clamps. Also, squeeze the hoses and replace any that are brittle or excessively spongy feeling.

5. Tire Tread – Replace any tire that has less than 3/32-inches of tread. Uneven tire wear can indicate alignment, wheel balance or suspension problems that must be addressed to prevent further tire damage.

6. Tire Pressure – Check tire pressure frequently in winter. As the temperature drops, so will tire pressures. The proper tire pressure levels will be in the owner’s manual or on a sticker typically located on the driver’s side door jamb. Check the spare too.

7. Air Filter – Check the engine air filter by holding it up to the light. If light can be seen through much of the filter, it is still clean enough to work effectively. However, if light is blocked by most of the filter, replace it.

8. Coolant Levels – Check the coolant level when the engine is cold. Add coolant if the level is low.

9. Lights – Check the operation of all headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals, emergency flashers, and back-up lights.

10. Wiper Blades – Replace blades that leave streaks or misses spots. Consider installing winter wiper blades that wrap the blade frame in a rubber boot to reduce ice and snow buildup. Check your washer fluid level too.

11. Brakes – If there is any indication of a brake problem, have the system inspected by a certi-fied technician to ensure all components are in good working order.

12. Transmission, Brake and Power Steering Fluids – Check all fluids to ensure they are at or above the minimum safe levels.

Our lives are a tapestry of history and culture and satisfaction…food and holidays and ethic traditions passed on thru the generations on stained index cards. Indelible, yummy memories that make you want to share them…to love it, to eat it, to fight over the very last bit. Hey, you gonna eat that? Not anymore Not for us. The phone call was anticipated. My daughter

lay there – lethargic on the sofa. Day 41 of throw-ing up every single day. “Common things happen commonly” said the doctors at each subsequent ap-pointment. “It’s a sinus infection, an allergic re-action, a gag reflex.” Mothers intuition – which up until now, I didn’t know I had – kicked in. No freaking way was this an ear infection. I listened into the receiver…stunned, nervous, adrenaline causing my hands to betray me and clam up…and heard the apologetic tone..“Well, we know what it is…. She has Celiac DIsease”. “Gluten Free” is a buzz word today, a fad in

some circles, on Dr. Oz, the View – the increasing commonness makes me thankful…but a mere 7 years ago it was a “WHAT?” A screeching halt to life as we knew it. OK – in retrospect, with some time and distance and education, it’s not so bad..but in that moment, those few little words spoken by the pediatrician reduced me to tears. An answer, a cure, a life sentence? Rapid

fire questions...Is it life threatening? Is there a cure? What do I do first? I was freaking out and my mind was racing and I was crying because life as I ex-pected – Life as I was taught –was now gone, in an instant, poof. The doctor says “there is no real cure but as long as she never eats wheat again she should be perfect” No gluten – that tiny little protein wreaking

havoc with her intestines – stopping the flow of necessary nutrients. I scooped her sleeping form off of the couch and drew her into my lap. I dropped cross legged onto the rug and cradled my sick little skinny baby – 20% lighter than she was only last month - and cried.

They should have been tears of joy – but truthfully – that first cry was not for her, or even in relief for an answer. That first round of sobbing, soul searching tears were for brownies and bagels and pizza that would never be eaten. For cupcakes and pancakes and ziti with meatballs, untouched.

Most parents would gladly take their child’s disease, illness, pain on themselves – to prevent distress, to make their child’s life easier. I have to be honest and say that in that moment – in the quiet of the room, after I hung up the phone – I was not so willing to trade places. I was instantly ashamed that my first thought

wasn’t “Hallelujah”. My first threads of thought were distressing and full of sadness over the loss of food that she wouldn’t eat. Couldn’t eat. I was sick with my own selfishness, over my panic…to be sad over something that on paper seems so manageable – but it wasn’t at the time. But after the initial flood of emotions ebbed

and my eyes couldn’t cry anymore, I just sat there, with my daughter asleep in my lap. I couldn’t ignore the sweetness – the sleeping eyes with unimagin-ably long eyelashes lacing her cheeks, the feel of her soft skin as I swept her hair back from her forehead and the reality that we knew – really knew what was wrong and I could fix it. I curled her little body into my own – I gathered my wits, took some big cleans-ing breaths to right myself and I felt the tiniest cor-ners of thankfulness peeking through my shroud of desperation. Awkwardly I stood up, maneuvering to put her

down without waking her up. I turned on the comput-er to research what would now be our life and walked into the kitchen as it booted up. With what little I knew about her diagnosis, I knew for sure that my job as her mom was to nurture. I stood in front of the pantry and grabbed a bag of rice and went through the calming routing of putting food on the stove to cook, all the while knowing that she could safely eat something tonight. And that’s how it goes in our family –

treasured memories and traditions have been rewrit-ten to a modern setting of alternatives and substitu-tions, vacations and dinners and birthdays are thought out in advance for the availability of safe items and these days when we get together for a meal, we arethankful.

ReALITy CHeCk! WINTeR’S COMING GeAR UP!

This past year Mother Nature has thrown gardeners some crazy curve balls. This summer turned out to be hot and dry – a real scorcher. Thinking back to April, we had crazy warm weath-er which forced most of the spring blooming trees and shrubs into blossom super early. This on top of a bizarre winter – didn’t we used to have snow around here? Naturally (?) the early spring was followed up by a couple of hard frosts which burned most of the blossoms. Thank your lucky stars you didn’t own an apple orchard this year. Most of the early blooms were frost burned into obscurity. Some shrubs and trees didn’t ever bloom at all.

Then the summer drought – don’t forget the plague of locusts.

Put it all behind you. It’s time to gear up for the long winter. Time to prepare the lawn and the garden for the next growing season. Lawn Maintenance: I always recommend a winterizing fertilizer that is time released to keep the grass roots strong while things are dormant over the winter. I also like to use a Grub-ex or a diazanon product for the pesky grubs in the fall. Knock ‘em off now and it won’t interfere with spring over seeding and aeration. (Check out some of these products at Becker’s Farms in East Greenbush.) And don’t forget to mow your lawn weekly to keep up with the leaves. Mulch them right back into the lawn for free grass nutrition. Gardens: The goal here is healthy and stable plants next spring. Top off all of your beds with a coating of natural or compost mulch to protect perennials and shrubs from the cold and dry frozen air. I get my mulch locally from Ken Morris and Sons Excavating. Just ask for “natural mulch.” Fall is a great time to divide your perennials as well. Typically, perennials can be di-vided at any time that the ground is not frozen. However, there are times and conditions that are more favorable than others. As a rule plants put energy into root growth immediately after flowering. Divide immediately after peak flowering. Lawn and Garden Equipment: Ethanol which is added to gasoline is the major enemy. Many gardeners are adding fuel stabilizers to their tanks year round – not a bad idea. Just before the last mowing or fall use, this is what I do with my mowers, weed whackers, hedge trimmers and chainsaws. Following the recommended dosage of the fuel stabilizer, add a dose to the tank that final time, complete the chore of choice and then run the equipment until it runs completely out of gas. This way any fuel that is left in the carburetor won’t gum up on you in the spring when you unearth it from the garage. Mother Nature still can really speak vividly in the fall with beautiful mums, sedums, even late hydrangea (my mother’s favorite), just to mention a few colorful fall plants. At least con-sider a quick splash of color as a fixture for your border by adding a few pots of mums to create a fabulous fall showcase. Again, drop by Becker’s Farms for a terrific selection. And while you’re these, consider investing is some spring flowering bulbs. Those daffodils and tulips will really make your day next April, but they have to go in the ground soon. Leaves are already starting to change. Mornings are chilly and crisp. Time to trade in that garden spade for the snow shovel, ‘cause you never know what she’s gonna’ throw at us in the next six months.

How Important Is A Home Inspection? Should a buyer get a home inspection for a home they are buying? Should a seller order a home inspection prior to putting the property on the market? There are advantages for both.

A home inspection is a visual examination of both the physical structure & major systems of the en-tire home including: walls, ceilings, floors, decks, exterior covering, the roof, foundation, insulation and ven-tilation, plumbing, electrical, heating and air conditioning. It is not a pass/fail exam. A third-party inspector will give a report on the physical condition and suggest repairs.

For buyers, a home inspection clause in the written offer that makes the purchase contingent upon the findings can provide peace of mind. If a serious problem is found, it allows room to renegotiate the purchase price or “opt-out” of buying the home altogether.

More often, inspections reveal less serious defects that aren’t enough to warrant backing out of the transition. However, knowing about these minor problems can prevent major disasters down the road. In addition, if specified in the inspection clause, the cost of the repairs can be at the seller’s expense.

Another advantage to having a home inspection is it offers buyers an opportunity to become fa-miliar with their new home & learn about maintenance to help in its upkeep. Although not required, it’s recommended that buyers be present during the inspection. This allows them to observe the inspection; ask questions about the condition of the home; and receive an objective opinion.

For sellers, conducting a home inspection (or pre-inspection) before listing their homes puts the control back into their hands.

When the buyer inspection finds problems, it can hinder negotiations and cost the seller more in repairs. By having a pre-inspection, the seller can help eliminate any surprise findings after an offer has been made. The seller can make repairs before placing the home on the market & possibly even increase the value of the home.

A pre-inspection can also serve as a great marketing tool. Sellers are required by law to disclose any known defects in the home. Having a pre-inspection report available for buyers tells them that the seller has nothing to hide. If there are major problems found during the pre-inspection, it gives the seller an op-portunity to disclose the condition, making it less likely for the buyer to pull out of the deal or try to rene-gotiate the price.

The Martin Van Buren National Historic Site.

President Van Buren’s mansion is open for tours daily. Sign-up for tours at the visitor center. Tours begin at the

top of every hour from 9:00 to 4:00.

The visitor season runs seven days-a-week from mid-May to October 31. An entrance fee for those 16 and older, to tour the house, is collected at the Visitor Center located

across the Old Post Road from the parking lot. The Visitor Center is open daily from from 9:00am to 4:30pm. Please

see the park ranger there for additional information on fees, tours and sales items. Holders of America the Beauti-

ful The National Parks & Federal Recreational Lands Pass are admitted free. Daily

activities include ranger-led tours of Lindenwald. See the centerpiece of President Van Buren’s Lindenwald farm.

The mansion is also where Van Buren managed two presi-dential campaigns and entertained politicians and celebri-

ties during the turbulent 1840’s and 1850’s.

Schodack Island State Park Ice Skating Area Open in February

The ice skating area at Schodack Island State Park will be open for public use through the end of February as ice and weather conditions allow. The area will be open daily from 10 – 4 . In addition, Night skating dates, when skating area hours will be extended to 8 pm. The night skating dates are February 12th, and February 26th.

Schodack Island State Park will also host full moon night hike on Feb . 12th 6pm at the main parking lot. Bring snowshoes & enjoy ice skating and hiking and our bonfire.

Addicted to Saving

Yes, I admit it, I am a closet couponer, maybe its not so secret anymore. At times, I could tell my kids are embarrassed, waiting at the counter when a coupon would not scan or when they wanted something and of course I had to dig out that coupon. I have been using them for years and with a little research, I have been able to find a deal and a coupon for just about everything! But lets face it, with the prices of everything going up, every little bit helps. I think after years of “recreational couponing” and saving (that is what I call my usage, I am not not an extreme user) and, now that my kids understand the value money and a coupon. they get it.

Holiday time is the worst, the stores entice you with the glitz of the newly decorated isle, they lure you in with the newest and the trendiest. My secret to holiday shopping has always been the same, for Halloween , Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentines Day and Easter buy after the holiday , when things get reduced. Usually I stock up on few items at 50% and I have been known to fill a few carts at 75% and of course at 90% off.

Lets talk Halloween, since it is just around the corner. Start planning early!!!! At this point I have taken all of my deals out that I have purchased from the year before. This includes cool costumes that I know my kids will love or pieces to add on to homemade ones, craft items, pumpkin decorating items and some new decorative pieces. One tip I use for treats for Halloween, I buy all the back to school treats that are on-sale in early September, packs of cookies, chips, crackers and snack bars. I take a few packs of each right out of the large packages and put them right in my Halloween treat basket and in the pantry it goes, already! Also costumes I do not use, I will of-fer them to my friends, so they can enjoy the saving too. And then what is not used I consign the following year and make a few dollars on each , sometimes more depending on how much I paid.

I find that my kids get mesmerized with all those costumes catalogs that come in the mail,(I recycle those quick)but I do use them for inspiration. One thing I ask myself and say to my kids is, how can we make a costume with things we have in the house right now! And then if we need to buy 1 or 2 pieces for the homemade project, I only have to spend a fraction of the cost of a whole costume.

Here are the top 10 (really 12, I could not leave them out) homemade costumes of 2012!!!These can all be made with things you have around the house, be creative!! (start saving boxes)

1. Lego Block- a box that you can cut arm and leg holes and then add cottage cheese containers to make the circles and cover or paint it your favorite color.

2.Rubic’s Cube- same idea except you use colored paper in blocks.3. Snow Man- White sweat suit/white garbage bag stuffed and belted

4. Bag of jelly beans-clear garbage bag w/arm & leg holes filled w/ small colored balloons5. Basket of laundry- laundry basket w/the bottom cut out for your legs, fill it with clean or dirty laundry

(safety pin things to your solid colored top)6. Static Cling-wear a solid color outfit and safety pin socks, baby clothes, dryer sheets etc.

7. Bubble bath- Cut the bottom out of a white solid basket for your legs and fill with pearlized white and light pink balloons, where a shower cap and a loufah with a handle

8. Pair of Dice-grab a friend and 2 boxes with leg and arm holes painted white w/black circles9. Bunch of Grapes-black or brown outfit with purple or green balloons clustered w/ brown or black wire ribbon for the vine.

10. Miss America/Prom Queen- wear your old bridesmaid dresses or gowns and make a sash out of some wide ribbon and make your title.

11. Mother Nature-Long skirt w/vest or tunic decorate yourself with branches, silk flowers, fake birds or crows. Use small stuffed animals as props squirrels or chipmunks.

12. American Tourist- Hawian shirt, camera with strap around neck, fanny pack, sunglasses trucker hat and a handful of maps.

Start planning early, so theres no rushed purchases and better choices in the stores. With my kids it just builds the excitement and which can really help with creativity. I LOVE SAVING MONEY!

As a General Dentist. I treat patients in all aspects of dentistry & I regularly do fillings, root canals, extract teeth, treat gum disease, replace missing teeth, do implant restorations, create dentures and do cosmetic restorations, such as veneers, crowns and bridges.

An Orthodontist specializes in the controlled movement of the teeth either by attaching bands, brackets & wires the teeth, or with increasing success, using a series of invisible aligners. Most orthodontic cases are done in co-ordination with a general dentist and sometimes with an oral surgeon, depending on the complexity of the move-ment or alignment required.

Most people meet the Oral Surgeon to have their wis-dom teeth removed. However, Oral Surgeons place im-plants, do biopsies of suspect lesions and repair fractured jaw bones. They also deal with medically compromised patients, traumatic facial injuries, congenital defects and damaged TMJ’s.

Many people cringe when hearing “root canal” but an Endodontist can be your best friend when facing an in-fected or dying tooth. Modern techniques make root ca-nals go quicker, and are often completed in a single visit. That being said, teeth generally contain 1 to 5 canals, so some can be very tricky. Once finished, you return to your general dentist for the recommend final restoration, usually a filling or a crown.

Periodontists commonly perform scaling & root plan-ing (deep cleaning), gum surgery and implant place-ment. Getting gums healthy and keeping bone loss from progressing once diagnosed with periodontal disease is their goal. You may never have a cavity in your entire life yet still lose teeth due to gum disease. Gum disease is generally not painful until it is severe in nature

A Prosthodontist is a restorative specialist who has a caseload that runs from routine single crowns, partial and complete dentures to complex rehabilitation of a se-verely damaged dentition to a Hollywood style cosmetic rehab.
