How will a web site benefi t my business? Having a well-built
web site can greatly increase your sales and exposure. Potential
customers are searching the web everyday for the same products and
services that you provide. Here are just 5 excellent reasons to
have a web site:
1) Consumers search online for many products and services before
they even think about calling or stopping by. Your business should
be accessible to these consumers 24/7, as many web searches for
products and services occur during non-business hours.
2) You can educate consumers about your business while they are
comparing places to shop. Consumers tend to have more confi dence
in a business that they know more about.
3) Keep your customers close by. With a web site, you are able
to use features such as auto responders, e-mails, web forms, and
many other forms of interactivity to keep in touch with customers
24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Your business will be accessible to
customers and potential customers around the clock.
4) It's professional! You can put your web site address on
business cards, advertisements, logos, letterheads, and much more.
A business with a web site gains more desirable leads than a
business without one.
5) Consumers demand it. With more and more people using the
internet to shop around, they are expecting businesses to have a
web site that they can visit. It gives them insight on your
business, as well as the products and services you have to offer.
If they aren't fi nding your business online, they are fi nding
someone else.
Choosing the right web designer is also a critical factor. Make
sure to ask the following questions:>Will my web designer be
around when I need maintenance to my site?>Are they local and
provide a reasonable turnaround time?>Do they provide services
that will help build my online presence as my business
grows?>Are their prices competitive and in line with their
experience?>Do their current clients have positive feedback to
provide?>Do they have an online portfolio to display their
abilities?

Q: My kids want to adopt a Guinea Pig. Do they make good pets?
What can I expect from a Guinea Pig?
A: March is national Adopt A Guinea Pig month. These adorable
little creatures can make great family pets. The guinea pig is
quiet, does not demand constant attention, has relatively low-cost
upkeep, yet is very affectionate. A guinea pig is often thought of
as a good pet for children, and this is true, but as with all pets,
parents must make certain the child is old enough to be gentle with
the animal and mature enough to care for it properly. A guinea pig
is a sociable animal and needs a home where it will receive
attention and affection. Guinea pigs generally live for fi ve to
seven years and are very sociable animals. They bite only when very
frightened, usually from such things as mishandling or fear of a
threatening animal. Children caring for guinea pigs should always
be supervised by an adult, since these animals need to be treated
gently. One of a guinea pigs most endearing traits is his tendency
to whistle when excited by someone coming into the room or offering
a special treat.
Always keep the cage indoors away from drafts and extreme
temperatures. The bottom of the cage should be lined with wood
shavings or some other form of safe bedding. Do not use cedar or
pine chips - the oils they contain can be dangerous to the animal.
Timothy hay is a good choice of bedding.
Be sure to change the bedding often enough to keep it dry and
odor-free. Guinea pigs love to hide when they play, so be sure to
place cardboard tubes or other toys in the enclosure. Guinea pigs
can be allowed to run free in one room to get additional exercise,
but the room should be carefully checked for openings from which
the guinea pigs can escape, get lost and possibly end up hurt.
These animals must be supervised when they are loose because they
will chew on anything in their paths - including electrical
wires.
It is essential to provide a guinea pig with enough vitamin C.
You can feed oranges and other high-C foods such as kale and
strawberries. You can give your guinea pig small amounts of fresh
fruit and vegetables to complement his or her basic diet, but
always make sure to clean up any leftover fresh food before it
spoils. Grass hay should be made available. Its great for the
digestive system and will satisfy your pets need to gnaw. Fresh,
clean water should be available at all times. Use an inverted
bottle with a drinking tube, and change the water daily.
Ask theCanterbury Vet
www.canterburyvet.com
88 Delaware Ave, Delmar NY 12054 + 439-2700
Guinea pigs teeth grow continuously, just like those of all
other rodents. It is important for you to give your guinea pig a
piece of wood that he or she can gnaw on to wear his or her teeth
down.
Guinea pigs are social animals that prefer to live in small
groups. If necessary, two young males generally can be kept
together, but fi ghting usually breaks out among adult males.
Several females can be kept together without problems, however.
Since guinea pigs, like all rodents, multiply rapidly, keeping
males and females together is not recommended. Consult with your
veterinarian for more about having a Guinea Pig as a pet.

Greasing the GrooveIts been approximately two months since New
Years Day, which means its been approximately two months since you
made your New Years Resolution(s). Sohows it going?
Historically, the overwhelming majority of us fall off the New
Years Resolution Wagon somewhere between six-eight weeks
afterwards, right around Valentines Day (scientifi c connection or
chocolate-induced coincidence?).
The problem many of us have with making lasting changes, whether
its quitting smoking, losing weight or stopping any habit that
stands in our way of living a healthy life, is having a
perfectionist attitude. And before you roll your eyes and mutter,
yeah, well, Im not a perfectionistI can never do anything right!,
let me point out, as my then-teenage daughter did to me years ago,
that THAT is the very defi nition of a perfectionist. And expecting
that we should be able to get to a point where we can push the
automatic pilot button once and for all, and never again struggle
with bad habits can only set us up for failure. Progress, not
perfection, as they say.
And thats not news to most of us, but do you really, honestly
believe it and act accordingly?
There is a training method in Russian kettlebell lifting called
Greasing The Groove (GTG), which in its essence, is repeating a
movement at regular intervals over the course of the day, but never
to excess or to failure. The result is improved movement and
strength gains without risk of injury.
GTG translates well when pursuing other goals. Repeating a new
action consistently but not obsessively and overdoing it, will help
make it a new habit much more easily! Also.
1) Dont tackle too many changes at once. If one or two is good,
more is not better. Those afore-mentioned perfectionists know what
Im talking about. This is a sure-fi re route to throwing the baby
out with the bathwater. And speaking of babies
2) Take baby steps. If youre going to make a major-for-you
change, dont set yourself up for failure by only looking at your
ultimate goal. If your goal is to lose 100 pounds of body fat, or
deadlift 300 pounds, or run 5k without stopping, make a time lime
with mini-goals (e.g, lose 5 pounds by this date; run to the end of
your driveway
without collapsing by this date). Whatever your goal, break it
into reasonable, manageable-for-you chunks that you can check
off.
3) Stop thinking that more is always better. Rest is equally
important to muscle and endurance gains. Among many athletes
weekend or otherwise rest has become a four-letter word. FACT: your
muscles cannot, repeat, cannot get stronger unless they are given
time to repair.
4) Accountability. Find someone or something that holds you
accountable for reaching your goals. Just remember: no shaming
allowed and dont should all over yourself.
Remember: success doesnt mean perfection; life is messy and your
path will rarely be linear. Keep going, keep expecting it to be
challenging, and keep greasing that groove!

Neighbors Next DoorNeighbors Next Door
It was an adverti sement placed in a magazine that opened the
door to a passion that would last a lifeti me. David LaPlante was
16, broke, and wanted his own guitar. The ad that caught his eye
read, YOU can build a guitar for $20. It sparked the imaginati on
of a young man who loved music. A new guitar it seemed, was unatt
ainable. But building his own? For $20? That he could do. With the
money he earned mowing a few lawns, and the help of his woodworking
father, David built his fi rst guitar. 102 guitars later, he is
slowly and steadily handcraft ing classical guitars one at a ti me
in his workshop/studio in Selkirk, NY. In fact, LaPlante is a
highly respected luthier whose pieces are played and collected
worldwide. There is only a bit of Davids fi rst guitar left today.
He played that instrument throughout his high school and college
years. Eventually it was taken apart, pieces used for other
guitars. Though that fi rst guitar is long gone, he does have his
fi rst music partner. Steven Pounds, the guy that David starti ng
making music with in 1965, his friend and collaborator, is sti ll
with him today. They are two of the folk trio all-She-wrote.
Rounding out the trio is Davids wife, noted singer/songwriter,
Gloria Jean. Before there was the trio, before guitar making, even,
there was a love of nature. Growing up in Connecti cut, David spent
much of his ti me outdoors. He became interested in taxidermy and
came to know the preparators at Yale University. His mother would
drive him there aft er school so he could watch the work of the
professional taxidermists. Those men became friends and mentors.
His early interest in the outdoors and preparing and exhibiti ng
wildlife led to a degree in zoology, which, he says is similar to
instrument building. He explains: Taxidermy work is allied very
closely with instrument work in that its very sculptural. Its
three-dimensional. It seems like it would be separate. But it isnt.
Davids work as a zoologist brought him to Albany in 1974. The New
York State Museum was being built, and he was hired as a curator.
At the museum, he built the mastodons, the mountain lion, caribou,
and was responsible for preparing the birds in the bird hall. This
interesti ng and sculptural work kept David engaged for
all of thirty-eight years. He worked on the exhibits, and
eventually moved to a managerial positi on. All the while, he
quietly built guitars, one at a ti me in his workshop. When he was
promoted to supervisor, the work at the museum became less
hands-on. His focus slowly shift ed, and he started building more
guitars. There were ti mes, however, that the guitars had to be put
on the back burner. He remembers franti cally fi nishing the 9/11
exhibit. Two days before it was set to open, the carpet wasnt laid,
as his installer went home with a toothache. Knowing the governor
was coming to speak and the event would be att ended by many, he
worked non-stop. It was ti mes like those that the guitars played
second fi ddle, so to speak, to his work at the museum. But in
David LaPlantes heart, all of those years, were guitars. Building
guitars. Aft er building his fi rst, and a few for friends, he
began selling his creati ons. Once I built the fi rst one, I
enjoyed the aestheti c. And the instrument itself. So I just kept
doing it. Originally making steel-
stringed guitars, David now makes classical guitars exclusively.
The classical variety was just more interesti ng to him. He even
went to Spain for a summer to study with Jose Luis Romanillos, a
renowned classical guitar maker. His interest in di erent musical
styles and study in Spain resulted in David emerging with a
singular style for one-of-a-kind instruments. The process for
creati ng a guitar
is a complicated one. The wood she uses are from all over:
spruce from Europe, rosewood from India, mahogany from South
America, spanish cypress from the Mediterranean region and maple
from the Northeastern United States. He starts by thicknessing and
sanding the wood. This creates an ultra-thin surface. The wood is
sliced through the center to create two thin pieces, and the grains
are matched. Someti mes a decorati ve seam is added, someti mes
not. The wood is about 2.5 millimeters thick on the back of the
guitar, and the edges are tapered. The bracing (the support on the
soundboard and back of the guitar) is glued in. The sides are bent
and formed on a hot pipe. The guitar is built and assembled on a fi
xture. Trim is added. The neck is att ached. The

whole thing is fi nished with a technique called French Polish
in which shellac is applied with a special cloth. David is
especially careful with the shellac. A thin fi nish is opti mal for
the sound of wood. A heavy amount of shellac will mask the true
sound of an instrument. Ulti mately, David is striving for an
instrument that plays well and has presence. Each note on his
guitars is strong and clear. His approach to guitar-making hasnt
changed much in forty fi ve years. Rather than jumping from one
technique to another, he has built his style very carefully and
thoughtf ully. Over the years, I have worked at improving things
incrementally. Its a very systemati c approach. I experiment in
subtle ways. The mode of constructi on Ive followed for many years
produces consistent results.LaPlantes guitars have been played in
front of millions of people. Most notably, Noel Paul Stookey, the
Paul of Peter, Paul and Mary has played a LaPlante exclusively for
20 years. Occasionally, David will see one of his guitars on
television. Hes recognized them on the Phil Donahue show, the Tavis
Smiley show, numerous PBS specials, Good Morning America and even
the Democrati c Nati onal Conventi on.David is also a noted
historian and restorer of vintage C.F. Marti n Guitars. He is
currently part of a consorti um that is working to publish a book
tentati vely enti tled C.F. Marti n and the Inventi on of the
American Guitar. The book, which will be o ered through the Hal
Leonard Publishing Group, and concurrent major museum
exhibiti on is planned for 2013.Now reti red from the museum,
David dedicates his ti me to making guitars and together with his
wife and friend, making music. They tour around the region playing
co eehouses and clubs. The all-She-wrote trio also plays locally at
Emack and Bolios in Albany. Its important to their group that they
play locally, for free. Davids enthusiasm and passion for building
and playing guitars is the same as when he was the 16-old kid back
in Connecti cut. Each guitar he builds becomes his favorite as he
slowly and methodically pieces it together. He explains his reti
red life this way: I spent 35 years subsidizing myself so I could
build guitars exclusively. Now, Im doing it. And Im enjoying every
single moment.

Irish Soda Bread RecipeIngredients4 to 4 1/2 cups fl our2 Tbsp
sugar1 teaspoon salt1 teaspoon baking soda4 Tbsp butter1 cup
raisins1 large egg, lightly beaten2 cups buttermilk
1. Preheat oven to 425. Sift together 4 cups of fl our, the
sugar, salt, and baking soda into a large mixing bowl.
2. Using a pastry cutter or two knives (can also use your fi
ngers), work butter into fl our mixture until it resembles coarse
meal, then stir in raisins.
3 Make a well in the center of the fl our mixture. Add beaten
egg and buttermilk to well and mix in with a wooden spoon until
dough is too stiff to stir. Dust hands with a little fl our, then
gently knead dough in the bowl just long enough to form a rough
ball. If the dough is too sticky to work with, add in a little more
fl our. Do not over-knead! Transfer dough to a lightly fl oured
surface and shape into a round loaf. Note that the dough will be a
little sticky, and quite shaggy (a little like a shortcake biscuit
dough). You want to work it just enough so that it comes together.
If you over-knead, the bread will end up tough.
4 Transfer dough to a large, lightly greased cast-iron skillet
or a baking sheet (it will fl atten out a bit in the pan or on the
baking sheet). Using a serrated knife, score top of dough about an
inch or so deep in an X shape. The purpose of the scoring is to
help heat get into the center of the dough while it cooks. Transfer
to oven and bake until bread is golden and bottom sounds hollow
when tapped, about 35-45 minutes. (If you use a cast iron pan, it
may take a little longer as it takes longer for the pan to heat up
than a baking sheet.) Check for doneness also by inserting a long,
thin skewer into the center. If it comes out clean, its done.
Hint 1: If the top is getting too dark while baking, tent the
bread with some aluminum foil.
Hint 2: If you use a cast iron skillet to cook the bread in the
oven, be very careful when you take the pan out. Its easy to forget
that the handle is extremely hot. Cool the handle with an ice cube,
or put a pot holder over it.
Remove pan or sheet from oven, let bread sit in the pan or on
the sheet for 5-10 minutes, then remove to a rack to cool briefl y.
Serve bread warm, at room temperature, or sliced and toasted. Best
when eaten warm and just baked.

What should I do when my child doesnt want to stay committed to
an activity?
There are many schools of thought on whether or not to force a
commitment from a child, or adult, for that matter. No matter which
side of the fence you are on, there are some steps that should be
taken to help reinforce commitment.
Prior to having challenges, there are a few things that can be
done to help avoid this quitter situation in the fi rst place.
First, prior to starting any program, get the childs buy-in. Make
sure the child knows what the commitment is and have him or her
verbalize it back to you. This will allow you to refl ect back on
the promise made at a later date. Second, have a regular schedule.
This, too, will help reinforce any commitment challenges (i.e., Its
our commitment to go to practice every Tuesday and Wednesday).
Always reward their commitment. For example, make sure you
congratulate your son or daughter regularly for attending classes
on a regular basis. Also, participate when possible. This should be
done in more ways than one. If there are parent/child events, its
important that you participate with your child. Not only will you
build a bond with your child, but it will also help reinforce the
importance of the commitment made.
The other way to participate is to take part in activities put
on by the business or school. These help keep everyone interested.
Encourage your child to make

friends. The more a child is anchored to a program byhaving
friends and family involved, the less likely he or she will
quit.
Finally, dont just give in. On occasions, its okay to take a
break from a class or an event, but make sure there is a followup
commitment and stick to it at all cost. For example, If you take
off from class on Tuesday, I expect you to go to class on Wednesday
instead. Can we agree on that? This is a great way to prepare your
child for many of the commitments he or she will take on throughout
life.

What do you like most about Bethlehem? That question was asked
as an ice-breaker of each member of the newly formed Governance
Options Study Committee. The committee members answers, taken as a
whole, paint a remarkable picture of our town, and I want to share
them with you.
Perhaps the most frequently used word was community in
particular, that we really are one. Bethlehem residents share more
than a municipal boundary, there is genuine concern for one another
and a strong, small-town feel despite being a community of nearly
35,000. The sense of togetherness and community, and the wealth of
charitable, service and civic groups are all major factors making
this a great place to live.
A strong runner up in the answers was the schools. Almost
everyone said that they originally moved to Bethlehem for the
schools, whether BCSD, RCS, or Guilderland. Thats an important
thing to keep in mind as all three districts head into a very diffi
cult budget year. People also highly value St. Thomas and other
nonpublic schools.
Many of the committee members talked about the nice mix of rural
and suburban areas, and the many choices in housing styles and
neighborhoods. Several people observed that we have a strong sense
of place in Bethlehem. They talked about the physical beauty of the
town, about having a center and great neighborhoods, and also,
again and again, about the sense of community. You dont go to the
supermarket or walk around Town without meeting friends.
Of course, the many trails, creeks, rural and natural areas were
mentioned prominently, not to mention the Hudson River. Bethlehem
is a great town for walking, whether on a trail, sidewalk or on a
neighborhood street. People also like being close to Albany, where
many work, and living in a location with lots of exciting places
nearby the Adirondacks, Catskills and Saratoga, just to name a
few.
Town services were lauded people appreciate good roads, leaf
pickup and policing. Knowing that Bethlehem is a safe place really
matters. People love the town pool, sports fi elds and the library.
There is
always something to do here. Senior services are of great
importance to many, and to all of us who value having a
senior-friendly community.
And even though no one mentioned it, I know that they appreciate
good drinking water and sewers. The old expression about not
missing your water till the well runs dry is very true. We dont
tend to think about these things until a system fails (usually very
briefl y), or when its necessary to dig up a road to repair or
rebuild something. Like the roofs on our houses, infrastructure is
not really fun to think about, but we have to make sure were taking
the steps necessary to keep it in shape. OK, back to the fun
stuff.
One person said the most exciting thing about Bethlehem is that
we are on the verge of expansion, and that between the Vista
technology park, the Selkirk yards and the 9W corridor, we could
see signifi cant commercial growth. Commercial development brings
jobs and more affordable taxes for homeowners. Of course, growth
can threaten some of the things we like most. Thats why the Town
Board and I are committed to reviewing Bethlehems Comprehensive
Plan that guides land use, and having an open discussion with the
community about it.
Public discussion is always good. We all learn from each other,
including when we disagree.
I want to close with the comment one person made that I think
really points the way to the future. It was said that the best
thing about Bethlehem is that we share a determined commitment to
make it a better place. What better thing could be said about our
town?
We will continue to face both opportunities and diffi culties,
including some very serious budget choices. As we do this,
together, lets keep in mind the many good things we have. Lets also
remember that the things we value require a community commitment.
Sometimes these choices will be hard, but hard choices are usually
the most important decisions we make.
What do you like most about Bethlehem?

Give Your Portfolio a Spring Cleaning
Springtime is almost here. If youre like many people, the
arrival of spring means its time to spruce up your home. But why
stop there? This year, consider applying some of those same
spring-cleaning techniques to your investment portfolio.
Here are some ideas you may want to put to work:
GET RID OF CLUTTER. You probably dont have to look too far
around your home to fi nd things that are broken or simply no
longer useful to you. If you poke around your portfolio, you might
make similar discoveries: an investment that has chronically
underperformed, duplicates another investment or met your needs in
the past but is less relevant to your current situation and goals.
Once you identify these types of investments, you may decide to
sell them and use the proceeds to take advantage of opportunities
that may prove more valuable to you.
CONSOLIDATE. Over the years, you may have accumulated multiple
versions of common household items brooms, mops, hammers which pop
up mysteriously in various parts of your home. You might fi nd it
more effi cient, and even less expensive, if you consolidated all
these things in one centralized location. As an investor, you also
might fi nd that consolidation can offer you some benefi ts. Do you
have one Individual Retirement Account (IRA) with one fi nancial
services provider and a second IRA with another? Do you have a
couple of old 401(k) accounts with former employers? And have you
scattered investments here, there and everywhere? By consolidating
all these accounts in one place, you can cut down on paperwork,
reduce fees and, most importantly, unite your investment dollars so
that its easier for you to see what you have and then follow a
single, coherent investment strategy.
PREPARE FOR TURBULENT WEATHER. As you know, springtime can bring
heavy rains, hail, strong winds and other threats to your home. As
part of your overall spring cleaning, you may want to check the
condition of your roof,
clear branches away from your house, clean your gutters and
downspouts, and take other steps to protect your property from the
ravages of Mother Nature. And just as you need to safeguard your
home, youll want to protect the lifestyles of those who live in
that home namely, your family. You can help accomplish this by
reviewing your life and disability insurance to make sure its still
suffi cient for your needs.
GET PROFESSIONAL HELP. You may fi nd that you cant do all your
spring cleaning by yourself. For example, if your carpets and rugs
are heavily soiled, you may need to call in a professional cleaner.
Or if your tree branches have grown out of control, you might need
to bring in a tree trimmer. Similarly, when you decide to tidy up
your portfolio, youll need some assistance from a fi nancial
professional someone who can study your current mix of investments
and recommend changes, as needed, to help ensure your holdings are
suitable for your risk tolerance, time horizon and short- and
long-term goals.
Spring cleaning can reinvigorate your home and your overall
outlook. And by tidying up your investment portfolio, you can help
gain some of that same optimism for your future.

Records identify this photo as simply the Patterson House,
Glenmont Hill. Glenmont Hill rises up from the fl ats near the
Hudson River along todays Glenmont Road. In 1891, at the base of
the hill on River Road, Glenmont was a bustling hamlet including J.
Pattersons large property, a station on the West Shore Railroad,
the New York Sand and Facing Co. and the Abbey Hotel. This photo,

Greetings fellow readers,
I love a good story. I love to hear people share tales of their
adventures, their lives, the cute things that their children or
grandchildren have done. I love informationmy mom lovingly called
me her bookwormlong before I could have the instant gratifi cation
of fi nding anything out almost instantly on the InternetI would
have to research through books. If I heard a word that I didnt
knowI grabbed the dictionary/thesaurus. If something was mentioned
in history, that I didnt know I turned to the encyclopedia. Just as
in the 1986 movie Short Circuit where the errant robot Johnny 5
searches endlessly for input, I would pour over encyclopedias,
National Geographic, Time, Newsweek, Saturday Evening Post, Life,
Readers Digestany printed word that came into my reach. The
original Guilderland Library moved into a newly constructed site
just around the corner from my house in Westmere, in 1969. My
schools library would only allow one book a week to go home, which
I thought was most tragic! I remember when the library opened that
I would take out books of Broadway plays, biographies of
celebrities and saints, Alfred Hitchcock Short Stories, and the
classics. I would save my fi rst babysitting money to buy my own
copies of Heidi, Little Women, Kidnapped, The Five Little Peppers
and How they Grew, and Lassie at Woolworths. Those books cost 65
cents at the time and I still have some of them in my collection. I
loved when I had the opportunity to go to see a Broadway play with
my high school. When I saw news of the Tony Awards, I would go to
the library to take out books on the latest years plays. At Mercy
High I was in 3 plays, one was based on Shakespeares heroines. I
played Desdemona, had long Roman locks and called out from the back
of the auditorium for assistance to fi nd my missing handkerchief.
I especially loved watching my friends embody each heroine. We each
read our plays and met with our English teacher to understand the
characters better. I still smile thinking of Johanna trying to
stomp her foot and spit simultaneously while portraying an angry
Kate from Taming of the Shrew. This love of the arts drew me more
to books and the well written plot, the unexpected twists, the
laughter, the fear, and if I didnt like the conclusion, I would
re-write it in my mind. I love a good play, though I havent been to
Broadway in years. My last live play on Broadway was Les
Miserables. (I cant wait for the musical movie that will be coming
out) while attending Manhattan College with a fellow Principal one
summer. She didnt have a clue of the plotshe didnt know the music!
Watching the play with her was such a delight! Her mouth was open
and her eyes wide with wonder as each scene unfolded. Seeing this
through her eyes made the experience all the more
precious. Another time had a very similar experience. We had
taken my parents to see Phantom of the Opera on Broadway. I spent
as much time watching my mother as she squeezed my hand and shared
tissues over this magical presentation. I love it when I share that
similar enthusiasm of books. We sell plays, classic literature and
books on music here at the shop and most days the shop is fi lled
with the music of Broadway thru the broadcast Sirius XM On Broadway
station (thank you Barb & Larry for that). One of the songs
from Sondheims Passion was playing the other dayI would like to
share some of those lyrics sung by the aging Fosca who explains why
she spends so much time with her books: I do not read to think. I
do not read to learn. I do not read to search for truth I know the
truth, the truth is hardly what I need. I read to dream. I read to
live...in other peoples lives. I read about the joys, the world
Dispenses to the fortunate, And listen for the echoes. I read to
live, I read To get away from life!I have said before that books
are the cheapest getaway. They can take you to ancient timeto far
off landsto worlds of fantasy. Books inform, educate, clarify,
entertainthey can profoundly affect your life! They can be pure fl
uff. You choosein our store we have over 18,000 titlesjust waiting
to be experienced.I would like to thank Donna Liquori, from the
Times Union, for the incredible shout out she gave to me and
Tattered Pages recently! You can view the article on TimesUnion.com
if you didnt see it in the paper. Donna was researching romance
novels and came to me for my opinion and insight. Romances and
mysteries are our two biggest sellers in the store. I explained
that romance is more than bodice rippers. I shared with her authors
that write historical romance, such as Catherine Coulterthose that
are set in the West such as Linda Lael Miller and Janet Dailey. I
showed her that along with Catherine Coulter, Sandra Brown, Kay
Hooper, Janet Evanovich, Linda Howard and Iris Johansen write both
romance and mystery. I told her that romance has evolved from
Harlequin to best sellers. I also reminded her that much of great
classic literature were basically romances! Wuthering Heights, Jane
Eyre, Pride & Prejudice, Madame Bovaryromances. I then shared
my new love of urban fantasy and dystopian fi ction that feature
strong, courageous female heroinesnot a fainting lily among them!
She said that she had a new perspective on the genre. I told her
that when they are well writtenthey are greatyes, there are some
that arent so well writtenbut even they have their own followers.
One of my recent customers mentioned that when books are too good
she slows down her reading speed, instead of speeding up, because
she doesnt want the book to end! Cecelia, a regular at Tattered
Pages, came in with her daughter to fi nd more Catherine Coulter
and Fern Michaels books. She informed me that in 2011 she read 450
books! She has already read over 70 this year! She has moved from
Harlequins & Regency Romances to other,

more substantial authors. She is now trying mysteries (no
graphic gore though!) so, of course I led her to the mystery cozy
writers that I know. An
