clusters, Big Data clusters, and OpenStack - in the datacentre and in the cloud.
XENON can support a range of HPC Cluster management products including: Rocks, xCAT, Slurm, PBS and Bright. This enables customers to focus on critical research and business rather than struggling to manage compute environments.
In addition, XENON along with it partners can deliver tailored training and provide knowledge transfer in both class-room or less informal work environments.
XENON understands that computing workloads are becoming more highly sophisticated and specialised and
these workload require computing systems that are tuned to the performance demands and characteristics of each workload.
XENON can offer the right combination of systems to meet any business challenge as well as maximise your IT investment.
XENON offers a comprehensive range of server solutions dedicated to solving each individual’s business problem that include:• Single/Dual Processor servers• Large Memory Systems (Multi-
processors/ Large memory: 4-way, 8-way, ScaleMP)
• High Density server solutions including Blade systems
XENON Brings Affordable 24×7 Genome Sequencing Computing Capability to the Garvan The challenge has now become to normalise the data across the cohort. This process is known as joint variant calling (“JVC”).
“When we went to XENON, we had very specific workloads that we were hoping to support including JVC and other types of bioinformatics computations and codes. The computer cluster, which the Garvan Institute acquired from XENON, was designed specifically around very fast local storage based on Intel® NVMe SSDs and the latest generation of Intel® CPUs.
As a result, researchers at the Garvan Institute have now been able to apply the JVC method to 1200 genomes which is the first part of the Medical Genome Reference Bank (MGRB) cohort of 4000.
XENON Expands Computational Resources at NCI for World Class Australian Research
NCI selected a solution from XENON and its technology partners Lenovo, Mellanox, and Cumulus, that would be integrated with Raijin’s existing infrastructure. “We chose to work with XENON due to their prior experience in designing and delivering HPC systems,” said Dr Muhammad Atif, Manager of HPC Systems and Cloud Services at NCI.
The new Raijin system was up and running ahead of schedule. Service disruption was minimized as all the performance tests were successfully completed over the Christmas holiday period.
“The system boost was up and running in time for acceptance testing over the holidays,” said Mr Williams. “XENON staff along with its partners worked extra long hours to make sure that everything went as planned. In fact we were back on line one day ahead of schedule.”
At ISC 2017, it was announced that Raijin was ranked within the world’s Top500 as the fastest computer in Oceania.
WEHI and XENON Design Private Cloud For Next Generation Cancer, Disease & Medical Research
With an ever increasing demand for high-performance computing resources due to accelerating data growth and a growing number of bioinformaticians and computational biologists the Institute needed to expand its research computing resources.
XENON presented a sophisticated Compute, Storage and Networking design that included a commercial-grade private cloud implementation with a software stack based around VMWare. The response was based on technology that has been well established, but never in the proposed configuration. This aligned to Mr Szarlat’s vision of pooling and providing resources in a virtualised environment instead of a system of individual but shared machines.
“XENON designed an incredibly forward-thinking approach, with sophisticated use of software as a differentiator. Most importantly, the team worked relentlessly with us to deliver a solution rather than just a system,” said Jakub Szarlat, eResearch Manager at WEHI.
Intel and XENON Drive High Performance Innovation at Futuris
Futuris is a company that designs and manufactures automotive seating and interiors at design and manufacturing facilities around the world. Considering their reputation for high quality and innovation, they looked for a system that would keep Futuris ahead of the industry and push design limits.
XENON designed a solution based on a Linux cluster architecture with a management and storage node and five compute nodes tied together by XENON’s customized cluster solution. All nodes leverage Intel’s Grantley platform with Haswell dual Intel® Xeon® E5-2667v3 Processors. These processors were chosen for their high single core performance as well as their high throughput with 8 physical cores per CPU.
The high speed Infiniband interconnect ties the cluster together into a high performance machine, which maximises the throughput and minimises the run time for the finite element simulations and model turn-around time for the engineers.
Intel and XENON Help Oil Search Dig Deeper Into Sub-Surface Oil and Gas Analysis
This unique oil sector technology project returns strong cost to benefit ratio.
Geoff Balemans, Telecommunications and High Performance Computing Manager at Oil Search works with the upstream technical computing groups. He explains that with low oil prices, it’s a much less forgiving market for error and so detailed modelling of assets, using sophisticated technology, becomes even more of a priority.
Balemans turned to long-term consulting partner, XENON to assist with this challenge. On this occasion, XENON designed a solution using new Intel® technology, Intel® Cache Acceleration Software for Windows* Workstations (Intel® CAS-W).
By storing a copy of this “hot” data in the SSD, server applications can access the data and run faster. Intel® CAS-W offers up to 12 times more performance on transactional database processing and up to 36 times faster processing of I/O intensive virtualised workloads.
XENON Deploys a Multi-Million Dollar High Performance Computing Solution to University of Queensland
XENON, a High Performance Computing (HPC) specialist, won a competitive tender to build and deliver a bespoke HPC computer that can process and analyse larger datasets than ever before, and put Australia at the forefront of big data research.
Led by Professor David Abramson, designer of FlashLite and Director of the University of Queensland’s Research Computing Centre, the computer includes three main innovations: high speed flash memory (instead of spinning disk), large amounts of high-speed main memory and software shared memory. Inspired by the US National Science Foundation Machine, Gordon, it will help deliver breakthroughs in research such as cardiac disease, climate change and astrophysics.
XENON delivered a system that includes ScaleMP software to provide huge memory mainframe-style processing benefits in a modern cluster system using next generation technologies. Compute nodes in FlashLite can be flexibly aggregated together into larger ‘supernodes’ using ScaleMP’s vSMP (Versatile Symmetric Multiprocessing) software.
