There are natural deficiencies in grains, forages and pasture. Deficiencies can also occur when feeding complete diets if recommended intake is not met, or if the horse is under stress or suffering from poor health. These deficiencies and imbalances can adversely affect development, health and performance. Using supplements can help balance the diet, provide extra nutritional support where needed, and help prevent diet related disorders.
supplements For Health and PerformanceNutrition has a huge influence on many areas of health. A well balanced diet and good management are key to working with problems such as DOD (developmental orthopedic disease), gastric ulcers and tying up. Nutrition is most effective when used as a preventative measure.
Broodmares and youngstock have specific nutritional needs which can be hard to meet when pasture is deficient or when stabling is required. Lysine is a limiting amino acid that is typically deficient in grain, hay or haylage based diets. Supplementing lysine along with the nutrients needed for bone development ensures sound growth and development. Another important element of pasture is the omega 3 fatty acids which need to be correctly balanced with omega 6 fatty acids. This balance is impossible to achieve with grains and hay, and supplementation with an oil high in omega fatty acids is essential.
Racing and performance horses have an elevated requirement for protein, vitamins, minerals and electrolytes.
Grain and hay or haylage based diets cannot meet these needs and supplementation is required. Even when feeding complete diets, there is still a need for electrolytes and certain vitamins or minerals at times of stress or illness. Additional antioxidants, oils and electrolytes are beneficial to horses with muscle disorders. Supplementing with available amino acids will help recovery and performance in any horse, and especially those with muscle disorders.
As most performance horses have a limited pasture intake and relatively high grain intake, the health of the stomach and the hindgut is constantly being challenged. Supplements for stomach health assist with management of gastric ulcers, and pre/probiotics will ensure a balanced and healthy gut which is essential for nutrient absorption and performance.
Horses of any age, whether in training or at rest, can suffer from joint related problems and can benefit from supplements designed to strengthen joints and maintain flexibility. Similarly, respiratory ailments can be a problem for any horse, particularly those that are stabled. Maintaining respiratory function is important for overall health but plays a major part in performance. Supplementation is a cost effective way of managing this area of health.
Balancing The Diet
supplements To Balance and BoostAny grain based diet will need balancing for minerals and vitamins. A supplement can provide the needed vitamins and minerals for health and performance. They can also be used when appetite is limited and the horse cannot eat the recommended levels of feeds. Supplementing certain amino acids, vitamins or minerals can give a horse a boost for health and performance. Horses can benefit from specific nutrients to assist with muscle repair, recovery and to protect against damage. It can also be beneficial to boost intake for fertility and for key periods of growth in youngstock.
a Balanced approachWhen choosing supplements it is important to remember that diets need to be balanced, and that prevention is always better than cure. Each horse is an individual and supplements allow a tailor made diet to be fed. For further advice, please contact our technical team.

Vitamins and minerals are essential micro nutrients, required by the body for daily metabolism, growth, repair and health
maintenance. Vitamins which function as enzymes or cofactors in metabolism are required on a daily basis. Over 13 minerals essential to body composition must all be supplied through the horse’s diet. An absence or imbalance
of vitamins or minerals in the diet impairs metabolism and can lead to reduced growth, poor performance, ill health or disease. At times of increased metabolic demand, such as pregnancy, lactation, growth, illness recovery or athletic performance, there is an increased need for vitamins and minerals. Proper supplementation can ensure all these metabolic needs are met.

VITAMIN-E SUPPLEMENT
SHY FEEDERSyrup based concentrated B-Vitamin supplement.
SuitAblE For: Fussy feeders, horses in competition or training, nervous horsesPerformance horses experience work stress and compromised gut health on a daily basis, which can compromise the horse’s natural ability to produce and absorb B vitamins. This can be easily resolved with by using Shy Feeder. B vitamin supplementation is also beneficial to nervous horses. B vitamins help optimize and regulate energy release from feed. For fussy feeders, the sweet syrup base is particularly palatable and the additional B vitamins promote good appetite.Mares and foals Mares will naturally have a reduced appetite in late pregnancy, and when stabled this typically results in a low B vitamin intake. Shy feeder is an easy way to restore the balance and ensure good body function in preparation for lactation. Foals that have to be stabled, or yearlings at time of sales preparation will also benefit from a palatable supply of B vitamins to help combat stress and encourage good growth and development.

Powdered supplement containing powerful antioxidants, vitamins C and K, to promote blood vessel strength and lung health in racehorses.
SuitAblE For: Horses in high intensity training and competitionContains natural super-antioxidants bioflavonoids and hesperidin, which help prevent cellular damage and protect blood vessels. Also includes vitamin C, a noted antioxidant found naturally occurring with bioflavonoids, it also functions to promote healing. Vitamin K is essential for blood clotting. These key ingredients are powerfully combined to minimise blood vessel injury and bleeding while promoting healing.
Before commencing Zosfor feeding, it is recommended to seek veterinary advice, to diagnose and treat any underlying lung conditions. When starting to feed Zosfor, in order to maximise its efficacy, an initial reduction in training intensity is recommended.
Precautions: Discontinue use 3 weeks prior to competition.
EIPH (Exercise Induced Pulmonary Haemorrhage)EIPH is a common respiratory condition of racehorses where bleeding occurs from small blood vessels in the lungs, into the small airspaces during strenuous exercise. Up to 80% of thoroughbred racehorses have evidence of EIPH however, visible blood from the nostrils is rare. Though the main cause of EIPH is believed to be mechanical pressure within the lung, pre-existing lung conditions can increase risk.

Modern horse husbandry is often far removed from a horse’s natural environment. This along with athletic
training, competition demands and high starch and sugar diets can all lead to over-excitable behaviour in some horses. This nervous tension can negatively affect
performance or trainability of a horse. Some horses get stressed by particular situations such as clipping, shoeing or travelling. In some of these cases, the ability to naturally calm the animal can benefit performance, riding temperament and handling of the horse.

Electrolytes or “salts” are a mix of essential minerals present in the blood and body tissues of horses. These electrolytes have
many functions, primarily maintaining water balance and blood volume in the body. They also function in muscle contraction, nerve conduction as well as being integral to kidney and liver functions. Horses lose electrolytes in their sweat. As strenuous exercise can
produce up to 10L of sweat, the electrolyte loss can be substantial. In order to maintain the body’s water balance it is essential to replace these lost electrolytes along with water. Adequate provision of electrolytes in a horse’s diet maintains hydration, appetite, improves exercise endurance and recovery after strenuous exercise. Electrolytes are also beneficial in the management of tying up.

Horses have a uniquely complex digestive system. Domesticated horse care has radically altered
the equine diet from the normal of ad libitum forage to stable confinement with periodic concentrate feeding and limited forage. With these changes of
husbandry has come a propensity towards various digestive upsets such as colic, diarrhoea and gastric ulcers. Maintenance of digestive health is therefore essential, not only to minimise the risk of digestive upset, but also to optimise nutrient uptake and utilisation from the diet.

SuitAblE For: All horsesTried and trusted Kentucky Karron Oil is a high quality flaxseed oil emulsion containing highly prized omega 3 and 6 essential fatty acids. Omega 3 can be low in horses fed preserved forages and concentrates. Flaxseed oil contains naturally occurring omega 3 and 6 that horses need. The omegas are well known to improve skin and coat health, leading to a lustrous shine. They are particularly supportive of the immune system as both are antioxidants, which guard against tissue damage. Omega 6 is involved in immune reaction regulation while omega 3 is a natural anti-inflammatory and can help dampen harmful immune responses such as allergies or hypersensitivities.

UP
Tying up is a syndrome where horses become stiff, classically in their hindquarters after strenuous exercise,
which can range from mild cramping to severe inability to move. Tying up occurs when muscles under athletic strain begin anaerobic metabolism and produce lactic acid. Some horses, particularly fillies are prone to recurrent episodes of tying up,
which can lead to training setbacks. Predisposing factors for tying up include high starch diets, over exertion during exercise, stress, pre-existing lameness and electrolyte imbalance. Cases of recurrent tying up often necessitate a period of rest and reduction in work load which interfere with the training regime. Therefore, reduction or elimination of tying up while in training is beneficial.

A good equine diet supplies all the necessary nutrients for the gut to digest and absorb so that the body can use those nutrients.
Proteins are extremely valuable nutrients and their constituents, amino acids, are used as building blocks by all cells of the body to create body mass. The diet must supply sufficient protein to maintain this body mass. Where protein is lacking, muscle (the body’s largest reservoir of protein) vis broken down to supply the body’s protein needs. The Foran Equine Pro-Am Range consists of three unique
innovative feed supplements providing hydrolysed protein for horses depending on their specific requirements. Hydrolysed proteins are pre-digested to amino acids ready for direct absorption into the body. This readily available, high quality protein is especially useful in post exercise recovery, illness recovery, rapid growth phases and lactation. The Pro-Am range supplies the full spectrum of essential amino acids required by a horse, as well as branch chain amino acids which are directly utilised to build and maintain muscle mass.

In order for a mare to produce a healthy, well conditioned foal, with sufficient milk to nourish that foal, excellent horsemanship and correct
nutrition are required. For mares being covered with a foal at foot the nutritional demands are greater. Supplementation ensures correct nutrient intake which is necessary for fertility.65% of in utero foal growth occurs during the last three months of pregnancy and supplementation of the mare helps provide
the necessary high quality nutrients, which are essential for foal development and growth. To maximise a foal’s full athletic potential, they require correct conformation, strong healthy bones and sound joints. The first 18-24 months of a horse’s life is a period of rapid growth, particularly of the skeletal system. Supplementation is most effective when used consistently throughout this period of intensive growth.

Calcium and phosphorus supplement with MSM, amino acids, copper and vitamin E for optimum bone growth and development.
SuitAblE For: Young stock and in foal or lactating maresCal-Gro provides the essential nutrients calcium and phosphorus in the ideal ratio of 2:1, for optimum bone growth in young horses. Skeletal development occurs during the first two years of a horse’s life, it is of critical importance that bone density is maximised in this period.Cal-Gro also contains MSM, magnesium, copper and zinc, which are necessary for bone growth and cartilage development. Lysine is the limiting amino acid in bone growth and present in mare’s milk, Cal-Gro also contains lysine to maximise bone growth even on low protein diets or restricted pasture access. Silicon which adds strength to bones, joints, ligaments and tendons is also provided by Cal-Gro.Cal-Gro provides all the essential nutrients for optimising bone and joint development during the rapid growth phase in horses. Daily supplementation in late gestation and lactating mares provides nutrient transfer to the foal. Continued supplementation of the weaned foal until skeletal maturity ensures strong bones and healthy joints.

Joint health is essential for equine athletes. Strong, stable, joints are needed to maximise performance ability. Conformation, injury
or sports discipline place high demands on the equine joint and can lead to joint injury, lameness or osteoarthritis. Improving and maintaining joint health through supplementation not only improves performance,
it also can prolong the athletic life of the horse.Joints are flexible structures where two bones meet that allow movement. The bone ends are covered by joint or articular cartilage, which is both strong and cushioning to ease movement and protect the bones. The joint space is filled with synovial fluid, which acts as a lubricant for smooth joint movement.

Superior powdered supplement containing marine collagen, vitamins and minerals to support bone and joint development.
SuitAblE For: In-foal mares and youngstock up to two years oldSuperior bone and joint development supplement containing marine collagen “super food” along with organic silica and key minerals calcium, phosphorus, copper, zinc and magnesium to promote and support bone and joint development. Vitamin A is added to support collagen formation, a key component of bone and Vitamin D3 is added to enhance calcium absorption. In-Foal maresOn average, 65% of foal growth occurs during the last three months of pregnancy. Provision of adequate nutrients to support this growth is simple when Osteo-Glycan is added to the mare’s ration.Young stockThe majority of bone calcium, bone density and cartilage are laid down in the first two years of a horse’s life; Osteo-Glycan supplementation provides a balanced nutritional supply to support this growth.Young horses entering training can be predisposed to skeletal injury by the tough physical demands. Osteo-Glycan provides an excellent support to bones and joints, helping to minimise these risks.

Attapulgite (Aluminium magnesium Silicate)It acts by binding larger molecules such as water, but, even more effectively, by binding toxins and moving them out of the body. Used to help manage digestive disturbances involving diarrhoea and loose droppings.
Bioflavonoids Include rutin and hesperidine. Bioflavonoids have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. To help maintain strength and function of capillaries.
biotin (vitamin h)Involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates, protein and fats. Indication for supplementation is mainly to support healthy hoof horn growth.
branched chain Amino Acids (bcAAs)Leucine, isoleucine and valine. Support muscle function and recovery after exercise. During exercise, BCAAs bypass metabolism in the liver and are directly oxidised in the muscle to provide energy.
calcium As an essential component of bone, it provides strength and rigidity to the skeleton. Calcium also contributes to normal functioning of heart, nerves, muscle and blood clotting.
chondroitinsFound in connective tissue, cartilage, tendons and ligaments. Supplemented to support these.
cholineInvolved in liver health and as a building block of cell membranes. Precursor for the neurotransmitter, Acetylcholine; thus, involved in the nervous system and in the functioning of muscle.
cobaltBuilding block for synthesis of vitamin B12 in the large intestine.
copperRequired for the healthy development and integrity of connective tissue. Part of bone development. Responsible for regular pigmentation of skin andhair (involved in the synthesis of the pigment melanin). Supports iron with the synthesis of haemoglobin (mobilises the iron stores in the body).
Emulsified oilFatty acids are the building blocks of fats and oils. Emulsified oil is oil that has been broken down into smaller particles facilitating digestion and absorption in the intestine.
Fats & oilsFatty acids are not only important for a glossy coat, skin and hoof health, but also for the health of joints, as well as the mental, digestive, reproductive, pulmonary and immune systems.
glucosamineSupports the structure and function of joints.
glutamineImportant as an energy source including for muscle cells, cells in the lining of the intestine and infection fighting cells in the immune system. Sufficient supply
of glutamine during times of exercise stress makes the breakdown of muscle cells to access glutamine unnecessary; thus, glutamine helps to maintain muscle mass.
glycosaminoglycans (gAgs)Also referred to as Mucopolysaccharides. Examples are heparin (anti-coagulant), chondroitins and hyluronic acid. Essentially they are carbohydrates containing amino sugars – usually proteoglycans (such as chondroitins and HA). A proteoglycan is made of glycosaminoglycan chains.
herbs and essential oilsEssential oils such as aniseed, thyme, peppermint, eucalyptus and horehound support the loosening of mucus, lubrication of the bronchi, help to fight inflammation and invading pathogens and act against bronchospasm. Licorice has anti-viral properties and can help change the consistency of mucus, allowing for easier passage out of the system.
hyaluronic Acid (hA)Found in synovial fluid (fluid inside the joint). Supplemented to support production of joint fluids.
hydrolysed protein Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. Two amino acids linked together by a specific bond form a di-peptide, three amino acids linked together form a tri-peptide. Long chains of amino acids are called polypeptides. Feeding a di- or tri-peptide rather than a long chain of amino acids means that the amino acids can be absorbed much faster and more efficiently.
inulinA soluble fibre. A prebiotic as it promotes the growth of beneficial intestinal bacteria. Resulting in increased utilisation of calcium, phosphorus, copper, iron and manganese. Also enhances flavour (sweet taste), but without producing an insulin response as it is not readily absorbed.
iodineInvolved in regulating basal metabolism by being important for the functioning of the thyroid gland .
ironComponent of haemoglobin and myoglobin. Haemoglobin transports oxygen in the blood. Myoglobin is a protein in heart and skeletal muscle, which carries oxygen.
lecithin Natural lipid. Especially found in the nervous system and the liver. The gel it forms after contact with water or saliva may improve protective qualities of the natural mucus layer in the stomach by acting as a barrier against the hydrochloric acid of the stomach, protecting the sensitive mucosa.
lysineNeeded to build muscle and to maintain muscles throughout rest periods. Involved in energy production (Kreb’s Cycle). Lysine deficiency inhibits the development of body substance, especially muscle. Grains are generally deficient in lysine in relation to requirements.
magnesium Necessary for muscle and nerve function. Involved in bone development.

manganeseEssential for carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. Involved in the synthesis of chondroitin sulphate, and therefore important for healthy joints. Also important for the functioning of the ovaries.
marine collagenA source of HA, chondroitin, glucosamine and manganese (as well as some other minerals, such as calcium). Human studies have proven the efficacy of using shark cartilage for healthier joints and, also, in the treatment of some cancer patients.
methionineSulphur-containing amino acid. Building block of body tissue e.g. muscle or hoof horn. Carnitine is synthesised from lysine and methionine in the liver. Involved in the biosynthesis of cystine, lecithin and many others.
methylsulfonylmethane (mSm)Biologically active sulphur compound. Promotes joint and ligament health, particularly in conjunction with other ingredients targeting joint health (GAGs). Thought to target osteoarthritis.
omega -3 fatty acids Anti-inflammatory properties. Increase cellular membrane flexibility. Many other beneficial effects have been attributed to omega-3 fatty acids, such as improvement in breeding performance of broodmares and stallions, and even, reduced incidence of bleeding. Fatty acids play many important roles in the equine diet.Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are omega-3 fatty acids.
omega-6 fatty acidsImportant for inflammatory reactions to fight infection. Critical for normal functioning of the immune system.
organic silicaTo support tendon and ligament elasticity. For strong connective tissue. To promote calcification of bones.
pectinMucosal protecting properties.
phosphorusEssential part of the skeleton. Required for energy transfer reactions.
potassiumEssential for neuromuscular excitability. Key role in acid-base balance.
potassium iodide Mucus thinning properties. Used as an ingredient in supplements supporting the respiratory system when coughs occur. It is a highly available source of iodine.
SeleniumIntegral part of an antioxidant. Works jointly with vitamin E to protect cell membranes. Critical for the functioning of heart and skeletal muscle.
Sodium Acid citrate Neutralises excess lactic acid in tissues and blood. Citrate salts can actually enter into the muscle cell to target lactic acid built-up there.
Sodium and chlorideEssential for functioning of the central nervous system. Part of acid-base balance. Regulates the water balance in the body.
tryptophanConverted in the body to nicotinic acid (see vitamin B3) and the neurotransmitter, Serotonin. Serotonin plays a central role in the nervous system.
vitamin AImportant for healthy skin and mucous membranes, eyesight, healthy immune system and reproduction.
vitamin b1 (thiamine)Key role in carbohydrate metabolism. Co-enzyme supporting the change of nutrients into energy. Deficiencies can lead, for example, to inappetance and nervousness.
Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)Supports energy metabolism and production of infection-fighting immune cells.
vitamin b3 (niacin)Supports energy metabolism. Critical for the functioning of the Kreb’s cycle.
vitamin b5 (panthotenic Acid)Part of many metabolic pathways. Important for energy metabolism.
vitamin b6 (pyridoxine)Involved in amino acid metabolism. Role in haemoglobin production. Vitamin B6 is an essential factor in energy production.
vitamin b9 (Folic Acid)Involved in the production of red and white blood cells. Needed for tissues with rapid cell growth and turnover.
vitamin b12 (cyanocobalamin)Promotes red blood cell production. Involved in protein metabolism and to a lesser extent also in the metabolism of fats and carbohydrates.
vitamin cAntioxidant. Stimulates the immune system. Requirements may be elevated in times of stress.
vitamin dRequired for calcium absorption. Role in cell growth.
vitamin EKey antioxidant.
vitamin KFactor in blood clotting and blood vessel health.
yeastPrebiotic properties acting as a food for beneficial microbes in the large intestine, thus contributing to a healthy intestinal flora, promoting better metabolism of fibre and release of nutritive substances.
zincComponent of many enzymes (over 200) involved in protein and carbohydrate synthesis. Important for the integrity of the skin and wound healing.
