OUR DEVELOPMENT PHILOSOPHY

IN PARTNERSHIPAll of our overseas work is done in partnership with local organisations.

We act primarily as a funding partner, helping to finance specific projects, but also provide technical assistance where appopriate.

We believe that local people have the knowledge and skills to implement effective development so we partner with community-owned projects to ensure sustainability.

YOUNG PEOPLEOaktree focuses all aspects of their work on young people – overseas partnerships included.

We support projects that value young people and champion both leadership and resilience, so that young people are empowered to bring about change in their own communities.

We recognise that the most significant and immediate gains for social, economic, cultural and political participation are made through education for teenagers and young adults.

ASIA-PACIFIC

Self-InterestIn terms of our own stability and security, it is in Australia's self-interest to ensure the stability and development of our neighbouring countries.

Oaktree currently focuses all of its work in the Asia-Pacific region. This is for a number of reasons:

Regional FocusMany countries in the Asia-Pacific are amongst some of the poorest in the world, including East Timor, our closest neighbour.

ImpactDue to the proximity of the Asia Pacific, Oaktree believes this is where our funds and resources have the biggest impact. Close proximity also enables more frequent and cost-effective monitoring and evaluation of projects.ResponsibilityAs our neighbours and due to the common history that we share, Australia has a responsibility to assist in the empowerment of these communities.

CROSS CUTTING ISSUES

GenderProjects are designed in a way that encourages the participation of women and promotes gender equality

DisabilityWe engage with projects that focus on the empowerment of young people regardless of whether or not they have a disability, including physical, mental and sensory impairments.

Oaktree also recognises three cross-cutting issues that are central components of all projects that we engage with:

LeadershipInvesting in the young leaders of the future
