Day 4: SATURDAY 22 MARCH Mt. Vernon

Dear Public Radio Friends,

here’s hoping you can join me and other public radio enthusiasts next March for a

trip to our nation’s capital, Washington D.C., March 19 – 24, 2014. We’ve got a great trip planned – chock-full of history, culture, media and current events. We’ll do it all, from historic monuments to the state-of-the-art Newseum. Minnesota Public Radio’s president Jon McTag-gart will join us at National Public Radio head-quarters where I’ll have a chance to interview some of your favorite NPR correspondents, exclusively for our group. We’ll also enjoy a private reception at the U.S. Capitol with mem-bers of the Minnesota delegation. And, if all goes according to plan, we’ll even get a chance to see those famous cherry trees, which are supposed to be in bloom during our trip. Prior to the trip, we’ll get together for a dinner at Minnesota Public Radio headquarters—a great chance to meet fellow travelers and discuss the book and movie, “All the President’s Men,“ a riveting account of one of the most important events in recent American history. Plus, as part of an MPR fellowship program, I’m happy to say that we’ll have a young travel scholar join us who will offer insights and inspire you with his/her passion for the subject. Finally, we’ll gather one more time at MPR

hQ about a month after our trip for dinner, a video presentation of our adventure and a few laughs. I consider myself extremely lucky to have been able to do a job I love for 45 years and I’m truly touched that a group of public radio lovers might want to join me for a fun tour of one the greatest cities in the world. Since space is limited, I hope you’ll reserve your place----and get one of those free “Eichten” baseball jerseys---right away. Thanks!! It’ll be a heckuva trip!! Sincerely, —Gary Eichten

Pre-and Post-Tour Events

March 4, 2014 – Enjoy a light supper and book club discussion of “All The President’s Men” hosted by Gary Eichten at Minnesota Public Radio headquarters. April 21, 2014 – Reunite with the group and enjoy light cuisine and a beautifully produced presentation of your trip hosted by Gary Eich-ten at Minnesota Public Radio headquarters.

Your HostMPR News Editor-at-large and retired host Gary Eichten has worn many hats during his 45-year career at Min-nesota Public Radio. This award-winning journalist has served as host for MPR’s live special events news coverage, and has hosted all of the major news programs on MPR, includ-ing Midday, which he hosted for more than 20 years. Journalist David Brauer describes Gary as “a prince of a guy, genuinely revered for his crusty decency and patient interrogatories.” listeners have long admired his blunt inquiries coupled with a warm humanity while inter-viewing. In addition to politics and history, Gary loves to talk baseball over a couple of beers.

Travel ScholarAs part of an MPR fellowship program, you will be joined by a Travel Scholar , a young scholar or student whose area of study is part of the subject matter being examined on the trip. Travel Scholars are chosen by a panel of se-lected judges. Travelers will value the insights and contributions of the Travel Scholar and we know the Scholar will deeply appreciate the insights of all travelers.
