Weekly Message continued roots run deep, dating way back into Hebrew tradition. It is older than any other parts of the Mass except for Alleluia, Hosanna, and Amen. It is repeated numerous times in the Seder Meal, which is celebrated at the Jewish feast of Passover. We believe that it was at that meal that Jesus celebrated the Last Supper and instituted the Eucharist. In Hebrew this invocation reads:

When you sound it out it goes: Barukh atah Adonai Eloheinu melekh ha’olam… In English: Blessed are you, Lord our God, Ruler of the Universe… Here ends the Hebrew lesson! However, every year on Wednesday of Holy Week, we celebrate a Seder Meal at St. Mikes. It is a true Family and Thanksgiving event. Children are invited. Indeed, they play an important part in the course of the meal! It is a meal surrounded and suffused with prayer and a beautiful experience. I hope you can join us. Just sign up to bring something to the meal and to help in the setting of the tables and the preparation of the special Seder Meal plates. It provides a prayerful entry into the period of the Triduum celebrations. Come join us! Peace and love, Fr. Dan

JOINING THE PARISH We invite all who worship with us to become formal members of the St. Michael “Village” by registering as parishioners. Membership has its benefits! Initiation Ministries

Are you interested in becoming Catholic? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a ministry for those who are not baptized or who have been baptized in another faith tradition and wish to enter the Catholic Church. Are you hearing a quiet still voice within, urging you to learn more about the Catholic faith? Do you find yourself coming to St. Michael for Mass and wanting to be more involved in the community? Do you long for a deeper relationship with God? Contact: Annie McEntee | Coordinator | RCIA [email protected]

Is your child aged 7-18? Have they been baptized? Baptized in another faith? Has the whole family been away from the Church? The Rite of Christian Initiation for Children started a new group last fall. Contact us to set up a time to meet and see how we can help you on the journey. Contact: Sarah Brockwell | Director | Faith Formation [email protected] Parish Website: Learn & Grow > RCIC

Infant Baptism To have your child baptized at St. Michael: The family must be registered with the parish. Parents must attend preparation classes. To register for the parish, please attend a Newcomers’ Orientation meeting on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 PM or the fourth Sunday of the month after the 11:15 AM Mass. Vocations Cross

First, I extend my prayers to the family of Jack Donohue (77) a member of St. Michael. The funeral was held this week at the parish. I read the story of Jack's death online and realized he had been walking in his neighborhood and was struck by an SUV. At 77, it was a gift to be able to walk and enjoy the outside world. I do not know the circumstances, but to have someone go for a walk and have this happen is quite unbelievable. However, I see daily people dialing, talking, and listening with their cellphones in hand. I do not know if this is what happened to Jack, but people are not using good judgment. Was there not another accident that happened, because a truck driver was using his phone. Prayers for the Donohue Family over this sudden occurrence. How is your Lent going? This year, I have missed the Ecumenical Lenten Lunch & Speaker Series and the noon Stations of the Cross. Maybe this week, I will get back to it. With school out, I ended up making plans to visit my hometown, Scotland Neck, North Carolina, to visit family graves and old friends. It is hard to revisit my home with no family left there. Our town is losing its people, and there is nothing to bring folks to live there much anymore. I loved that town, and I know my parents were well loved there, also. I will let you know how it went. How often do you visit the hometown you were raised in? Some of you have to travel a long way to go home, across great land and oceans. All our memories are different and hard to take. We thank the people who are providing us with all the opportunities for us to realize a good Lenten experience. I continue to read my little black book and listen to the Dynamic Catholic series on my computer. I am still hoping someone will let me know ([email protected]) about their journey with FORMED. In the weeks ahead, our Easter Season and beyond will have the celebrations of Confirmation and First Communions. I have been a part of these journeys and celebrations for many years. They have been wonderful and amazing journeys. We pray that the faith called Catholicism will stay as a part of these children's lives. They need our prayers for a faith-filled future. Do you remember your celebrations of these sacraments or still have pictures? Share the experience with your children. We give thanks for all the adults who offer their time to share this journey with our children. I ask folks to consider supporting the Damian Muller Bluegrass Concert on April 27. It’s the last concert of this year. Damian is a great songwriter, and the group are a joy to listen to. Call the parish office, if you missed the opportunity to buy your tickets after Masses. There will be no ticket sales on Palm Sunday or Easter. Thank you to all our volunteers for helping it all happen.

Mary’s Way of the Cross The meeting of Jesus and Mary on the Way to the cross: “It was early Friday morning when I saw my son as He stumbled out. His bruised and bleeding skin sent a sword of pain deep into my heart and tears down my cheeks. Then Pilate asked the crowd why they wanted my son executed. They shouted, ‘Crucify Him!’ I wanted to plead with them to stop, but I knew this had to be. So I stood by and cried silently. Two men dragged over a heavy wooden cross, dropped it on His shoulders, and shoved Him down the road. My pain for Him was unbearable. I wanted to take the cross from Him and carry it myself. But I knew this had to be.”

Jesus, You suffered and died for me. May I join in your sufferings,

offering up my mental and physical pains to soothe Your Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Human Concerns

Parish Community Life

Society of St. Vincent de Paul The Society of St. Vincent de Paul Needs Help from a Local Financial Institution To any parishioners with connections to local financial institutions: Payday Loans and similar financial instruments are causing problems with many of the people we serve. Once getting to a point of desperation to pay a bill, many of our friends (as we refer to them) have no other recourse than to turn to companies providing quick access to extremely high interest loans. Our friends find themselves buying a little time with this cash, but many eventually sink hopelessly into debt to these companies, making their situations worse and putting them in a well of ever-growing debt. One of the goals of our conference here at St. Michael is to address this situation proactively by providing an escape route to this kind of debt and build a bridge to financial improvement and stability for our friends in need. To do this, we are seeking to establish a relationship with a financial institution willing to extend very low interest loans to these people in small amounts. Our conference will review and approve candidates for these loans and secure these small short-term loans with funds provided by our donors. The financial institution would administer the loan and help provide our friends in this program with a way to establish banking experience, credit ratings and even budgeting counseling. If you or someone you know in a local financial institution is interested in helping us with this effort, we would love to meet with you to discuss this and even put you into contact with financial institutions already helping St. Vincent de Paul in other states.

Prayer intentions during the weekend Masses have been shortened recently. We typically announce the name of someone with an acute illness or hospitalization at the Mass chosen by the individual/family. After that, if requested, the name will be included in The Defender’s Sick List for a month. Thank you.

NOTE: When adding people to our prayer list, please ask them ahead of time if this is alright with them.

Not everyone wants his/her name announced or published, and we wish to respect everyone’s privacy.

To add or remove someone on this list, please contact Magda Schultheis at 527-1037 ext. 126. Thank you.

Would you like your loved one on the list? Magda Schultheis 527-1037 ext. 126 | [email protected] Parishioners: Do You Need a Prayer Shawl? Our prayer shawl ministry is actively knitting and crocheting something special to comfort you or your loved one in times of need. Our prayer shawls are made and donated by Prayer Shawl Ministry members. There is no charge for a shawl. Shirley Uzel | Coordinator | 804-432-6833 | [email protected] Deacon David Nemetz | 804-527-1037 | [email protected]

Every few months we delete names listed here and ask family members to contact the parish office again, if they wish their loved one added back in.

In the section We remember those who have preceded us to the Father, we usually include the names of the recently deceased or those celebrating an anniversary that week. In order to have a request pertaining to anniversaries of the deceased included in the Prayers o f the Faithful (the Universal Prayer) at a Sunday or weekday Mass, such request should be submitted through the parish office in the form of a Mass Intention.

Please Pray
