We Learn in the light of Christ
Aprendemos en la luz de Cristo- La lumière du Christ dirige notre apprentissage
École/Escuela Father Leo Green is a Christ centered community that provides a Catholic learning environment celebrating the French and Spanish languages and their cultures. Guided by the teachings of Christ, the staff and students strive for high academic standards where all members are encouraged to develop 21st century learning skills and opportunities in order to become adaptable, global citizens who aspire to a life of faith filled service to others. We, the Catholic school community of École/Escuela Father Leo Green, will ensure that all members are treated with dignity and respect as we learn together in the light of Christ.
Administrators’ Message
To celebrate Catholic Education on Sunday November 05th, the Catholic Bishops of Alberta and Northwest
Territories issued their annual Catholic Education Sunday letter. In their message, the Bishops urged those
involved in the ministry of Catholic education to ponder, in light of our Catholic faith, the true, the good,
and the beautiful.
Every day in our Catholic schools, students are challenged to recognize the inherent beauty and worth of
every person, and to serve others, especially the poor, with compassion and justice. In Catholic education
we feed the minds of students with truth by facilitating their encounter with the Truth, who is Jesus. At
the same time, Catholic education seeks to help students be aware of their own inherent goodness as
children made in the image and likeness of God, while also offering them the opportunity to be silent and
to hear the voice of God summoning them to holiness.
November is also a time to honor all those who have given their life to military service so that we may live in a democratic society free to share our opinions and values safely with one another. Our Remembrance Day Service will begin at 10:30 on Thursday, November 09. Poppies are available in the office and will distributed to our students by our grade 6 leaders prior to the assembly. Donations to the poppy fund will be gratefully accepted. As always, parents are invited to join us for our Remembrance Day Service. Our school will be closed on Friday, November 10. The first school term will soon be coming to a close and the E- report cards (for students in grades 1-6) will be accessible on PowerSchool at the end of the day on Friday, November 17th. If you do not have a PowerSchool account, you will need to create one and add your child to it using the access information that was sent home with the students. If you require assistance, please contact Mme Smith at the office. Our staff looks forward to meeting and discussing with you your child’s accomplishments during the Student Led Conferences on Thursday, November 23th. Many Blessings,
G. Kodershah (Principal) A. Scarpelli-Mannarino (Asst. Principal)
Report Cards and Student Led Conferences Report cards will be available on PowerSchool on November 17th at 3pm. Student Led Conferences (for grades 1 – 6) for parents, teachers and students will be held on: Thursday, November 23, 2017 from 1:00pm – 4:00pm and 5:00pm – 8:00pm Again, this year, we will be using an on-line tool called Conference Manager to allow parents to book their own conference times with their children’s teacher. You will receive detailed information about Conference Manager in an email from your child’s teacher. In the meantime, here is the link to FLG Conference Manager which will become active on November 17th. Kindergarten conferences will be scheduled by the Kindergarten teachers. Please watch for information coming home with your child.
Teachers have been carefully assessing their students in order to provide parents with a detailed picture of
each child’s progress. It is very important that you take the time to read the entire report card with your
child. The key learner outcomes and teacher comments are very important in understanding your child’s
progress this term. Below is a snapshot of the what the levels of achievement on the Report Card mean.
Parents’ Support We at École/Escuela Father Leo Green acknowledge the important role parents play in their child’s learning and success at school. Checking agenda books nightly and providing a structured time and place for children to work will help kids to develop positive work habits and attitudes. We are pleased to offer our students various online resources that they can access from home to support the development of their literacy and numeracy skills. Please ensure that your child is logging on (with their username and password) to the applications listed below to practice their reading and mathematical skills as instructed by their teachers. If you have any questions on how to access these online resources, contact your child’s teacher.

Parents also play an important role in reinforcing safe behavior with their children by reviewing the student code of conduct included in their agendas. At school we review the expectations for safe and respectful behavior on a regular basis. If students make poor choices or engage in unsafe behavior, they are given the opportunity to reflect on their choices by completing a student reflection document that they take home for parents to review, sign and send back to school the next day. This document helps the students take responsibility for their actions and come up with a plan (with teacher’s guidance if needed) to correct the behavior and make peace. Thank you for your continuous support. It does make a difference!
Remembrance Day Service On November 9th at 10:30, students and staff at Father Leo Green will gather in the gym for our Remembrance Day Service. We would like to extend the invitation to you,
the parents, to join us for this special service. This year, Father Leo Green has a special request: if your child is a boy scout, girl scout, or cadet, they are encouraged to wear their uniform to the service. If you are a member of the armed forces, please consider joining us dressed in your uniform. The grades 1A, 1B & 3A will be leading the prayers on this day.
Chapters Indigo Adopt-A-School We are happy to announce that this year, with the support of many people in our community, we were
able to raise enough money to buy 356 books for our
school and classroom libraries through this wonderful
program. We would like to graciously thank the St
Albert Chapters for adopting our school. We would also
like to thank members of our community who donated
funds on-line and in the store.
Student Drop Off/Pick Up Zone The area in front of the school (along 144 Avenue) is marked as a Loading (5-
minute max) Zone. It is intended to be used for student drop-off and pick-up.
Please do not leave your vehicle in this area for more than 5 minutes. This is
also a “no idle” zone so please do not leave your car running. We have
billboard signs to remind everyone that this is a 5 min loading zone area.
Also, the parking lot at Father Leo Green is only for Edmonton Catholic School
District staff.
Please be respectful and courteous to all of our FLG family members and
share the parking that we do have.
Scholastic Book Fair Looking for a good book to engage your child? Looking to give the gift of reading this Christmas? Visit our annual Fall Scholastic Book Fair that will be held from Tuesday November 21 - Thursday November 23.
Did you know that Scholastic Book Fair returns up to 60% in product profits back to our school? This library fundraiser helps our school purchase new books and resources for our library and classrooms. Students will have an opportunity to visit the book fair during their regular library times, and are able to purchase books or items on those days. The Book
Fair will be open Tuesday and Wednesday from 9a.m. to 3p.m., Thursday 9a.m. to NOON and during the Parent/ Teacher Conference hours which are 1pm-4pm and 5pm-8pm. We encourage you to stop by and take a look. We accept cash, cheque, VISA, Master Card, AND Debit. We look forward to seeing you at the Book Fair.
We would not be able to hold the Scholastic Book Fair without parent help. If you interested in volunteering this year, please contact Mme. Sofia at 780-476-0606, or email her at [email protected] We thank you in advance for your time.
Please note that we will be hosting a Spanish Book Fair- Castilla Books in the spring with our Celebration of Learning.
Appropriate Winter Wear Winter will soon be here and with it, the expected cold weather. Please ensure your children are
dressed appropriately for the weather. Please label all new winter wear with your child’s name so
that it can be returned easily if lost. Students who are ill should remain at home until they feel well
enough to participate in all school activities, recess included.
Keeping Up-To-Date Our newsletters are published electronically and posted on our school website on the first Monday of
each month. You can read about all the news and activities that are happening at the school and also
have a calendar of events to go to in order to check on up-coming events. Our school website is:
www.fatherleogreen.ecsd.net
In addition to these newsletters, we will continue to share information through the Father Leo Green
Twitter Account.
We also send text messages as reminders for upcoming events and activities.
Classroom teachers email weekly communication logs to the parents/guardians of their students. These
documents outline the learning activities that are taking place in your child’s classroom as well as
reminders for any school wide events or activities. If you do not have access to a computer, please let us
know.

ECSD Online Budget Survey
Edmonton Catholic Schools believes it is essential to involve parents in providing input into
the budget process. In preparation for the upcoming 2018-2019 budget it is important that
the district gather as much information as possible. Therefore, as a parent of Edmonton
Catholic Schools, your feedback will provide a valuable contribution in the decision-making
process. The Parent Online Budget Survey will run from November 14th to November 28th. Please

FLG Halloween Howler Family Dance and Silent Auction
The Annual Family Dance and Silent Auction on October 27th was yet again an incredible success with another sell out! We apologize to those families that were unable to purchase tickets because we were sold to capacity with advance sales alone. We were able to get more food and pop quickly thanks to our awesome team, and the dance was a big success! Thank you to our parent volunteers, who did everything from coordinating the multiple parts of the dance for all of October, decorating the gym during the dance day, working a shift before, during and/or after the dance, to our marvelous grade 6 students who were busy helping at the front door, running the store, working in the concession, taking photos and filling many other important roles. FLG families certainly came out to have fun and support our School! We raised more money than ever before with the dance and silent auction this year!!
