It was an honor to gather at Holy Name Cathedral this past Monday evening with civic leaders from Chi-cago, Illinois, the Midwest, religious leaders from other faith denomina-tions, Archbishop Cupich’s family and my fellow priests for the Rite of Welcoming our new Archbishop to

Chicago. The Rite comes directly from the RCIA and begins with the new Archbishop knocking very loudly three times on the door of the Cathedral (like our Catechumens and Candidates did last week-end) and Monsignor Dan Mayall, the pastor of Holy Name, opening up the door and being the fi rst to shake his hand. At one point after the opening prayer, representatives from all of the above mentioned groups walked up to Cupich, who was standing in the sanctuary, and they took a few minutes to personally welcome him. A couple of things really stood out for me. First, the lively music that our new Archbishop personally chose was a combination of Spanish and Gospel tunes with very few traditional Catholic hymns. Secondly, at his request, the number of women who were very prominent proclaiming, leading song and worship was refreshing.

The biggest take away for me was as Cupich walked down the center aisle in procession, following the many civic and church representatives and each Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago, the crowd spontaneously erupted in applause so loud that the processional song was drowned out. The intensity of the applause continued as he took his place next to the Cathedra (or Chair) reserved for Cardinal George. As Cardinal George followed slowly, using two crutches to assist him, Archbishop Cupich turned, joined the ap-plause and gestured his applause towards Cardinal George to the point where we were not sure who we were applauding for, and then it clearly turned into applause for both. The gesture along with his kind words of gratitude towards Cardinal George are indications of the humility and respect that our new Archbishop has.

His homily was clearly directed to the community beyond but includ-ed the church, and it promised that he is a ready partner to address relevant issues such as gang violence and immigration to name a couple. He spoke of three elements that are critical in addressing the dry bones (an image from the fi rst reading from Ezekiel) of mod-ern life. They are Spirit, Land and People.

Particularly with my fellow priests, I sense a great eagerness to work with Archbishop Cupich. He has a strong pastoral sense be-cause he sees himself as a pastor, and from my conversation with him following, he is aware of what a special place Holy Family is.

We celebrate the feast of Christ the King this weekend, express-ing a title for Jesus that exults him and challenges us to broaden our experience of what a King is. This feast day also signals the conclusion of the church year as we usher in Advent next weekend.

The title King is referred to in the imagery of this week’s Gospel, which is a centerpiece of Catholic thought, and gives an insight into our theology of soteriology, or the study and concept of salvation. There is an age old debate that fi nds most Protestants embrac-ing the concept that salvation is a free gift from God and we can do nothing to earn it. That is rooted in Ephesians 2: 8. Catholic theology includes wisdom from James 2: 14-18 which says, “Faith without works is dead.” As I go along in life and ministry, I fi nd that a combination of the two is true. God gives us the gift of grace and his saving act generates freely given salvation, but we must heed this week’s Gospel to attend to the hungry, thirsty, stranger, imprisoned, and more of our neighbors in need to fully merit the gift of salvation. Perhaps the more we embrace salvation as a gift, the more we will be motivated to help ourselves and others through works; and the more we help each other through works, the more we can appreciate the gift of God’s saving grace.

Please join me in welcoming Gene Garcia as our newest member of the Holy Family staff as Director of Music. Many of you have had a chance to meet Gene as he has been one of the conductors/pia-nists with our music ministry in the past few months. Gene brings to us many years of experience as a professional pianist, vocalist and worship leader. His diverse experience as a leader and musi-cian spans across the military, secular and religious communities. Gene has played in and led music programs in both Catholic and non-Catholic churches. He shares the mission and vision of Holy Family and I believe he will be a terrifi c addition to our community. Please welcome him warmly during hospitality following Sunday morning masses this weekend.

I am also happy to announce a new partnership with St. Malachy+Precious Blood Parishes on the near west side of Chicago. Their community will be our new sharing parish. Fr. Matt Eyerman is the pastor of both parishes and many of you have met Matt through his presentation to our leadership gathering this sum-mer and his talk about violence recently during weekend liturgies here at Holy Family. We look forward to sharing our faith with the people and staff of St. Malachy+Precious Blood as well as sharing resources and programs that will be mutually benefi cial. There are envelopes in the pews for your contribution to the Catho-lic Campaign for Human Development. You might recall that Gigi Arnieri, an 8th grader at Holy Family Catholic Academy, wrote an 8 chapter essay this spring for a contest sponsored by Catholic Cam-paign for Human Development. Her essay won fi rst place in the Archdiocesan contest and was immediately placed in the national contest in which she was competing against some kids who were 5 years older. Gigi’s essay also won fi rst prize in the National CCHD essay contest. Congratulations Gigi, and thanks CCHD.

Host A Home MassCelebrating Mass in a home setting is a very special opportunity to meet people in a more informal, intimate setting. A Home Mass dates available are Wednesday, Janu-ary 14 or 21 beginning around 6:30pm.Who to invite: Defi nitely invite your Catholic friends, but also consider this an oppor-tunity to invite Catholics who may have drifted away from regular Mass attendance, no matter what the reason. Additionally, consider inviting non-catholic friends who might be curious about the Catholic faith or have questions about why we do certain things the way we do.

Items needed to celebrate Mass: Use things that are already in your home: small table such as an end table for an altar, a goblet for wine, plate or bowl for hosts, small glass for water, plain cloth napkin for a purifi cator and a candle. Hosts will be brought to your home.

HOLY FAMILY PADS SITE Holy Family’s PADS site needs volunteers to set up, provide and serve meals, work shifts, clean up as well as offer an atmosphere of comfort and safety. There are several ways YOU can serve the homeless in our community.

1) Volunteers will be in the narthex THIS weekend, November 22 and 23, after masses to assist you with sign ups. New volunteers are required to go through a brief orientation before working at a PADS site. (See number 2 below.)2) If you have not completed orientation, go to www.journeystheroadhome.org and click on Volunteer Opportunities to fi nd the 2014-15 orientation schedule. Online sign-ups are available to all volunteers who have completed orientation.3) Provide food for dinner, lunch or breakfast. Food can be dropped off hours, even days earlier, and prepared just prior to our guests arriving. Today, the sixth theme is presented.The Church’s social teaching is a rich treasure of wisdom about build-ing a just society and living lives of holiness amidst the challenges of modern society. Modern Catholic social teaching has been articulated through a tradition of papal, conciliar and episcopal documents. The depth and richness of this tradition can be understood best through a direct reading of these documents. In these brief refl ections, we highlight several of the key themes that are at the heart of our Catholic social tradition.

Call to Family, Community, and Participation The person is not only sacred but also social. How we organize our society-- in eco-nomics and politics, in law and policy -- directly affects human dignity and the capacity of individuals to grow in community. Marriage and the family are the central social institutions that must be supported and strengthened, not undermined. We believe people have a right and a duty to participate in society seeking together the common good and well-being of all, especially the poor and vulnerable. Economic and social policies as well as organization of the work world should be continually evaluated in light of their impact on the strength and stability of family life. The long-range future of this nation is intimately linked with the well-being of families, for the family is the most basic form of human community. Effi ciency and competition in the mar-ketplace must be moderated by greater concern for the way work schedules and compen-sation support or threaten the bonds between spouses and between parents and children. Pastoral Care

Prayer List Requests Remembering our sick in prayer is important to the Holy Family parish community. With the person’s or relative’s per-mission, his or her name will be read aloud during the inter-cessory prayers that weekend. We will then place the name of a sick person who has recently become ill on the screens at the weekend Masses for the following two weeks. Should the person become more seriously ill at a future time, let us know and we will then follow the same procedure. ALL the sick of our parish community and our relatives and friends who are ill can we added to our Book of Prayer in the narthex and then prayed for each and every day at Masses and by the prayer groups in our parish.

The Pastoral CareCommunity...provides, through our ministries, compassionate pastoral care with support and guidance for those who suff er in mind, body and spirit. The HOME MINISTRY

team would like to keep people in our community aware of the services we offer. We are available for the occasional wellness check, need for transportation, visit or help with a meal. Our members are all volunteers and we are always interested in those who might join in this ministry or members of our community who may be aware of a need we might be able to fi ll. Funeral Planning Ministry

With the increasing number of funerals celebrated at Holy Family, we have been piloting a new ministry to walk with families through the days and events of a loved one’s passing. The funeral planning min-istry meets with families to plan the wake, liturgy, and cemetery services. They coor-dinate with the Mass ministers, resurrec-tion choir, and luncheon volunteers. They journey with the family in grief, so that the prayer experiences refl ect the love of the family and the faith we share in the promise of the Lord.

Dealing with Diffi cult Family Members During the HolidaysLauren Eagle, Counseling Intern, Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health: Parish Services

My grandfather was fond of reminding me, “you can always choose your friends, but the Good Lord chooses your relatives”. These words serve as a gentle reminder that although we may love our relatives unconditionally, loving them is not always effortless or stress-free. The holidays can be a time of wearisome familial situations and sources of great family frustration. That being said, there are ways to cope with trying family members and hold onto your sanity during the year’s most hectic season.

One way to cope with diffi cult family mem-bers is to set secure boundaries with them. If you fi nd yourself growing annoyed or intolerant with a specifi c family member or familial situation, thinking through your op-tions can help you create a set of borders that can be established with your family members beforehand. This may involve setting a time limit for a Christmas party or renting a car so that relatives are not relied upon for transportation.

Another means of coping with diffi cult fam-ily members over the holiday season is to try experiencing a family gathering from the standpoint of observer rather than an active member. For instance, pretend you will have to describe verbatim the family party rather than what you experienced at the

party. Whether or not you actually discuss these events, the idea of later debriefi ng allows you to step outside of your role in the family. If you are an individual who prefers to talk it out, by all means discuss the stressful event with a loved one or good friend.

Additionally, despite the intense schedule and endless holiday obligations, allow time to recover. Of course this is easier said than done, but if you are able to foresee that you will need more time than usual to decompress, due to a tense family event for instance, then you can prepare down time in advance. Whatever means you use to recover make sure to schedule time for it.

The holiday season is unequivocally full of sources of stress, especially when dif-fi cult family members are added into the mix. Utilizing strategies such as these for handling diffi cult familial situations permits more room for the enjoyable moments and family-related stressors will not take control of your holidays.
