Question for Children: Who are the people most in need of help who live around you, and how can you help them?

Question for Youth: What can you do (alone, with friends, or with your family) to help those who are without food, shelter, or have other needs? When have you seen Jesus in the poor?

Question for Adults: As you grapple with this very strong, direct and demanding Gospel passage, name the people for whom you have cared personally – or if there are none, those for whom you will offer care in the coming weeks.

S P I R I T U A L I T Y O F T H E R E A D I N G S

Make Your Choice Not only is Sunday the feast of Christ the King, it is the last Sunday of the Church year! Advent will begin in a week! We should begin getting nervous about Christmas presents, shouldn’t we? And family dinner? Or else why we will not have a family to celebrate with?

Yes, but let us not get ahead of ourselves. For now we need only ask why the churches have chosen to mark Christ as “king.” Did they think we would understand our year better this way?

In a word, yes. We will be helped by looking at the Christ we have looked over the past months! And a revealing way to look is at the readings for Christ the King.

Thus the shepherd imagery of the First Reading. We are asked if we have let God’s sheep scatter over the face of the earth? Have we maybe eaten the sheep instead of tending them? If so, God said, “I myself will look after and tend my sheep. The injured I will bind up, the sick I will heal.”

This is a beautiful passage. Throughout history, God continually sought out his people, we are told, inviting them to a mutual relationship. It is the foundation of our faith. He shepherds us today in the same way!

Then the Responsorial Psalm, “The Lord is My Shepherd.” If we are paying attention we see that God is still being the shepherd, as he promised. Goodness and kindness are all around us. God has us walk beside restful waters, through green pastures.

Gratitude fills our hearts.

In the Second Reading, St. Paul tells us about Christ, who is God’s shepherding made concrete. In spite of the rampage of death and sorrow and sin, Christ brings the First Reading’s light and peace to the world!

Finally, the Gospel tells us in a parable who will get to have this light and peace. Not everyone! Some people have been goats instead.

Alright, how do we become sheep, in spite of our goatish tendencies? Or how do we become, at least sometimes, the sheep? Simple. We care for the Lord in other people. Yes.

Instead of goatishly taking our own preferences as the goals for our lives, though we must do that too, we join God as the one who cares for others. We dip into the restful waters with Jesus, we offer everything, with him, for the poor and needy, not because it is simpler but because this is the way the Lord has taken among us as the very way of God. The way of the King.

You see, the example is God, who gives according to the many needs of the least of his brothers and sisters. Instead of sleeping restfully in the slumber of non-acting, we are to join with Christ as one among very many shepherds. We are asked to say “yes.”

Yes to the God who loves without prejudice, to the Christ who spent life as a non entity, to the shepherd who would love his sheep to the very end. We will be cared for insofar as we care for them!

Next week: the new year of God’s love!

Screenagers: Growing up in the Digital Age Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that with her own kids and learned that the average kid spends 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. She wondered about the impact of all this time and about the friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen time—friction she knew all too well. Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids’ development and offers solutions on how adults can empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance. St. Theresa Catholic School invites you to attend a showing of the documentary, SCREENAGERS on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at 7:00 pm in the St. Theresa Catholic School Gym. Randy Kiel will be moderating discussion following the film.

Laudato Si’: Advocate For Our Common Home Pope Francis has spoken out strongly about ecology. His Encyclical Letter “Laudato Si, on Care For Our Common Home”, is based on Christian values and ideas of caring for the environment and the poor. Pope Francis urges us to take the Laudato Si’ pledge to:

Pray for and with creation; Live more simply; Advocate to protect our common home

The third component of Laudato Si Pledge is to advocate for our common home. Advocacy for the care of creation is an important responsibility. Our individual actions are important, and can do so much. But as a society we also need to recognize that these problems are local and global and require solutions, and will need to be achieved through political change, advocacy, and organizing. Policy changes are needed to enable and encourage lifestyle changes. You can take part in an advocacy campaign today to encourage the shift to a green, clean future for all. Here are some ways to help you get started:

Connect with local organizations: Conduct internet searches and/or ask family and friends where active groups in the local area are meeting.

Hold listening sessions: Bring people together at your parish, library, school, or community center to identify what needs to change in the community.

Become experts on how politics work: Identify what you can change and how to do it. Work with a local advocacy organization to hold classes on how a bill becomes a law, when your general assembly is in session, and ways to become engaged in politics.

Engage your parish in advocacy issues: Work as a “Green Team” or conduct community outreach to engage in advocacy initiatives. Bring parishioners together to visit and talk with members of mayors or local council meetings.

Pray and Act: Parishioners can identify issues and pray for intentions to take action for strong policies to limit emissions, protect creation, and bring Laudato Si’ to life.

By signing the Laudato Si’ Pledge, you have joined a larger community of Catholics around the world who are committed to living out Laudato Si’ in their own lives, and bringing it to their parishes and community. Take the Laudato Si’ Pledge at http://livelaudatosi.org/ In the coming months, we’ll be highlighting parishioners and school faculty in the bulletin to learn what actions they are taking to protect creation. If you are committed and living out the Laudato Si’ and would be interested in spreading the message, unite in prayer or take action, please contact Tammy Keiter at [email protected] or 515-577-5754. Andrew Dung-Lac, Priest and Martyr, c. 1795-1839

Saint Andrew Dung-Lac and his 116 companions represent the more than one hundred thousand martyrs killed during the persecutions of Christians which took place periodically beginning in the 17th century and running though most of the 19th century in Viet Nam. These 117 martyrs, who included bishops, priests, missionaries from France and Spain, lay

catechists, and even children, were beatified by four different popes between 1900 and 1951. Pope John Paul II canonized them as a group on June 19, 1988.

Andrew Dung-Lac, the symbol of the 117, was born Dung An Trân around 1795 to a poor pagan family in northern Viet Nam. While still a young boy, his family moved to Hanoi to find work. In Hanoi, the youngster met a catechist who provided him with shelter and food. The catechist also instructed the boy in the Christian faith and, three years later, he was baptized, taking the name Andrew at that time.

After receiving instruction in Latin and Chinese, Andrew became a catechist and, later, was selected as a candidate for the priesthood. In March, 1823, Andrew was ordained to the priesthood. As a parish priest, Andrew lived a simple life, fasting often and providing a model for the people in his town, many of whom were baptized by him.

During his reign, Emperor Minh-Mang (1820-1840) reinstituted persecution of Catholics. He has been compared to the emperor Nero in the Roman Empire. During this persecution, Fr. Andrew was imprisoned in 1835. His parishioners bought his freedom by their donations, but Fr. Andrew was rearrested in 1839, along with another Vietnamese priest, Peter Thi. While their freedom was once more purchased, it proved to be brief. Arrested again on November 10, 1839, both priests were tortured and beheaded on December 12, 1839.

These martyrs are honored by a memorial on November 24.

Andrew's message today: Saint Andrew and his companions, as well as the many thousands of unnamed martyrs in Viet Nam, provide powerful examples of the perseverance that strong faith can bring to those who are persecuted. Even today in Viet Nam, as well as elsewhere, persecution of Christians continues, but prayer can strengthen our faith. While not likely to face the kind of persecution that these saints

experienced, is your faith strong enough to face the ridicule that is more likely to come your way? Pray that God will give you the strength to bear up to the scorn that may come your way and to pray for your persecutors.
