HOLY REDEEMER CATHOLIC CHURCH, COLLEGE PARK, MD

Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe “

“The rulers sneered … the soldiers jeered … one of the criminals hanging there re-viled Jesus.” Is this the King of the Jews, the King of the Universe? If it is so, perhaps his kingdom is not at all what we would expect! In his letter to the laity, St. John Paul II spoke about how Christians share in the kingly mission of Christ. First, “they exer-cise their kingship as Christians, above all in the spiritual combat in which they seek to overcome in themselves the kingdom of sin.” In other words, before we give any thought to transforming society, we must first allow God to transform us. Through dai-ly prayer, regular self-examination, and frequent confession, we can recognize our faults more readily and choose love instead!

Second, St. John Paul II writes that the laity “make[s] a gift of themselves so as to serve, in justice and in charity, Jesus who is himself present in all his brothers and sisters, above all in the very least.” Christ’s kingship, and our own participation in it, is requires us to look beyond the privileged of society. It goes beyond networking and struggles of power. It goes with Jesus to the Cross!

Still, the kingship of Christ ought to effect society. “The lay faithful are called to restore to creation all its original value … ordering creation to the authentic well-being of humanity.” Jesus does this in a radical way through his death and resurrection. We, too, are invited to bring new life to the world around us. This means holding the world and everything in it as sacred. It means advocating for civil policies that re-spect life and paying special care to the vulnerable and marginalized in every stage of life. It means being disciples of Jesus, inviting people into authentic love so that one day we will together “be with [him] in Paradise!”

First Reconciliation

On Saturday, December 7th, chil-dren from our school and School of Religion program will be receiv-ing the Sacrament of First Recon-ciliation at 10:00 a.m. in the church.

The following day, Sunday, De-cember 8th, the children will re-

turn for the 10:00 a.m. Mass, and the children will receive a special blessing during Mass as they begin their preparation for their First Eucharist. Donuts, coffee, and juice will be provided for all First Recon-ciliation families in the Four Seasons Room after Mass. Questions? Please contact Fr. Andrew in the parish office or via e-mail at [email protected].

Please keep these little ones in your prayers as they prepare for the Sacrament of First Reconciliation!

Solemnity of the Immaculate

Conception of Mary

This year, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary falls on a Sunday and was therefore moved to Monday, December 9th. Because it is celebrated this year on a Monday, it is not considered a Holy Day of Obligation this year.

The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is, however, the patronal feast day of the Unit-ed States. Thus, we will celebrate a special

Immaculate Conception Mass on Monday, December 9th at 12:10 p.m. All are invited to join us as we honor Our Lady on this im-portant Solemnity.

Post-Bazaar Craft Sale

Our Harvest Bazaar is over for another year, but you still can own some of the beautiful arts and crafts from our Crafters Group!

Join us after Masses on the weekend of December 7th & 8th for a Post-Bazaar Craft Sale on the Mezza-nine and decorate your home for Christmas with one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted holiday cheer.

Retirement Fund for Religious

Give in thanksgiving. “The nuns left lasting impressions on me,” writes a donor. “I shall always be grateful for my Catholic educa-tion.” Please join in thanking the thousands of senior Catholic sis-ters, brothers, and religious order priests who worked tirelessly to educate the young and serve those in need. The special collection in December is for the Retirement Fund for Religious, which helps hundreds of religious communities care for aging members. Please give generously.

What Do You Think?

We Want To Know!

Holy Redeemer Parish last developed a Parish Directory on 2010. Since then, many people have moved into this parish. If you would like to volunteer your time to work on a project to develop another Parish Directory that will contain photos of parishioners and our many community activities, please contact Alex Sonski at cell: 717-303-9845 to discuss your thoughts and interest.

Offerings for All Souls

during the

Month of November

During November, the month of All Saints and All Souls, special Masses have been set aside to re-member all of our beloved dead. Each week, we will offer 1 or 2 Masses for those deceased loved

ones who are listed in the Book of Remembrance, which will be placed next to our Baptismal Font in the church.

If you would like to remember your loved ones, please fill out a special All Souls envelope found in the front entrance of the church and on the Mezza-nine. Those who receive collection envelopes will also find them in your collection envelope packets.

Rosary Ministry

What do rosary beads and broken umbrellas have in common?

In response to our parish's increasing interest in praying the rosary, a few parishioners have begun making rosaries for use at the Saturday afternoon devotions and for people to take home to continue their prayers. If you enjoy working with your hands, and would like to support this effort, please consider joining our infor-mal group. No experience is necessary. We will start with simple bead and cord rosaries, and lessons and materials will be provided.

Additionally, if you have broken rosaries that need repair, or any beads, bits, or parts that you don't know what to do with, these can be repaired and returned to you, or prayerfully reassembled into new, usable rosar-ies. We could also use a couple of broken umbrellas -- the metal ribs are used as a tool in one of the assembly techniques.

For further information, please contact Carole Wilkinson at 301-474-2303 [[email protected]] or Marie Winterson in the Parish office. Thank you.
