Principal’s Message:

Welcome back OLW families to a new and exciting academic year: 2018-2019!

It’s great to see all of our students back from their summer breaks, refreshed

and ready to engage in many new and exciting learning experiences and events

that the school will be offering. I’d like to take this time to welcome back Mlle.

Katherine who will be overseeing the Grade 1/2 French Immersion class, as

well as welcoming several new staff this year, Monsieur Chen, who will be

overseeing components of the French Physical education and science programs.

This September will no doubt be a busy start for many of our students and

families, and the school would like to thank in advance everyone for supporting

our long awaited return to holding the Terry Fox Run to heighten cancer

awareness and to support of cancer research with every 82 cents raised going

directly towards cancer research. More information regarding this very

important fundraising initiative will be sent home with the students in early

September.

Communication regarding school agenda books for the students, the pizza,

submarine sandwich and Lunch Lady Programs (program cost, due dates and

timeframes) will also be sent home in hard copy with online payment options

via KEV School Cash for the first two lunch programs.

In light of the TCDSB’s new three year pastoral plan: “Rooted in Christ: we

Belong, we Believe, we Become, “much of what we do this year at Our Lady of

Wisdom Catholic School will be grounded in our Catholic faith with the

exploration and affirmation of students’ understanding of who they are, how

they belong and the role that they play in sustaining a larger community that is

welcoming and inclusive. Using Mother Mary and Pope Francis’ reflections on

the importance of devotion to Mary, May we draw inspiration from the message

that “We do not extinguish hope in their hearts; we do not stifle their

expectations of peace!” he said, and “may the Lord grant us to work in this new

year with generosity to create a more supportive and welcoming world.”

Wishing everyone a fantastic start to the new school year!

A reminder that “ALL” visitors must enter the school building through the front doors by using the video monitoring

system and sign in at the main office. Entrance through the school yard doors or other entrances and exits, i.e. the

Kindergarten wing is strictly PROHIBITED. In the interest of safety for all students and to ensure that classes are

uninterrupted, we need everyone's total co-operation and understanding on this matter. If an item is being dropped off for

your child or pick up is required for an appointment, please come by the office. We will contact the class directly.

If you need to speak with your child’s teacher or the principal, kindly call and make an appointment. We are glad to meet

with you at a mutually convenient time.

APPROPRIATE DRESS CODE POLICY:

All students are expected to come to school dressed appropriately and in a manner that reflects the aims and atmosphere of

a Catholic school. Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic School has adopted a BLUE AND WHITE DRESS CODE.

APPROPRIATE DROPPING OFF & PICKING UP STUDENTS

For the sake of safety, we ask that in the mornings you drop off your children in the appropriate sections of the school

yard and leave them with our staff. This will help the students develop routines and it will also help our staff ensure a safe

school yard. The bell rings at 9 a.m. Please ensure that your child is dropped off no earlier than 8:30 a.m. Parents

should be aware that the supervision of the children remains their responsibility before and after school. Kindly

note: There is NO SUPERVISION in the school yard before 8:30 a.m. and after 3:45 p.m. Supervision in our school

yard begins at 8:30 a.m.

CELL PHONES:

The school understands the need for some students, specifically in the older junior and intermediate grades to bring a

cellphone device to school, as some students may have alternative methods of getting to school, i.e., by public transit, school

bus, walking, etc…. This being the case, we do understand and respect that students may need to communicate with their

parents upon arrival at school and after dismissal. However, the use of cell phones is NOT permitted throughout the school

day, and the expectation is that cellphones are put on silent mode and stowed away, out of sight. If a student needs to make

a phone call, they may ask a trusted adult staff member to use the phones in the main office. Thank you for your assistance

in this matter.

HANDS ON EXOTIC ANIMALS FASCINATE!

Year 1, Year 2 and Grade 1 students from Mlle. Camellia’s, Mlle. Gamuso’s, Mlle. Tymkewycz’s and Mme. Makar’s

classes immensely enjoyed the Hands-On Exotic Animals workshops, eagerly awaiting to meet many of the new and

interesting creatures which arrived at Wisdom on Monday, June 25th. The gym truly did become an “immersive learning

environment” in which the students had many opportunities to interact with the animals and presenters to learn more

about “basic animal biology, feeding habits, habitats and ecosystems, and conservation issues.” Students had the chance to

also “touch and hold a variety of exotic animals in a safe and controlled environment.” There was much new learning that

resulted and the start of an appreciation for animal needs and responsible stewardship of all of God’s creatures.

SWIM TO SURVIVE PROGRAM:

In partnership with the TCDSB’s Health/Physical/Outdoor Education/ Religious Ed/Family Life

departments, during the month of June, the Grade 4 class of Mlle. O visited the Agincourt

Recreation Centre to take part in an important potentially lifesaving program overseen by the

Royal Canadian Lifesaving Society, known as “Swim to Survive.” The main premise of the

program is to teach students how to survive “an unexpected fall into deep water.” Under the

direction of qualified swim instructors/lifeguards, Students learn practical skills, such as, how to

“roll into deep water, tread water for one minute,” and Swim a distance of 50 meters.

TRAFFIC PROTOCOL

To start off the school year with all students’ safety at the forefront, we need to ask for your increased vigilance with all of

our surrounding roads. We ask for your additional attention to the safety of our students, specifically in the areas in front

of our school. We need everyone’s help to work for the safety of all our children.

We have an ongoing concern with traffic congestion in front of the school during student drop-off and pick-up times. The

disorderly flow of traffic can jeopardize the safety of students and all pedestrians.

PLEASE HELP US HELP OUR CHILDREN:

1. During morning and afternoon peak times, follow the directions on the map illustrated below for approaching and

leaving the school area;

Use White Abbey Park to approach Japonica Rd.

Use Crosland Drive to leave the area.

Use the loop/cul-de-sac on White Abbey Park and wait in any of the spots where parking is allowed (maximum 30

Minutes). Use these roads in the direction indicated on the map.

2. The area in front of the main door of the school cannot be used as a drop-off OR a pick-up area. It is a school bus

loading zone! Please observe the Bus zone signs from pole to pole. There are two signs which indicate the exact

area of the bus loading zone!

3. The staff parking lot is NOT to be used to drop off or pick-up our child(ren).

4. Do not stop on the south side of Japonica Rd. It is a no stopping zone.

It is unsafe for our children to run across the road.

5. The newly paved passage way to the west of the school near the new addition is an emergency Fire Access route. Pick

up and drop off and Parking are strictly forbidden and any cars in the area will be ticketed and towed at the owner’s

expense. Parents can access the kindergarten area at the north end from the main school grounds in order to drop off and

pick up their children.

Have a meeting place a short walking distance away, established in advance so your child knows where to look for you.

Please, do not double park, block residents’ driveways OR park in the staff parking lot before school or after

school. NB: Please be advised that there is AMPLE PARKING on Crosland Dr. and Alice Crescent.

As members of the Our Lady of Wisdom community, please feel free to report dangerous situations directly to the Toronto Police services using the

following link, as this allows for the issue to be dealt with legally. https://www.torontopolice.on.ca/core/driving_complaint.php

GRADE 8 GRADUATION AND MONTREAL EXCURSION 2018

lt is with many fond memories and teeming amounts of pride that we wish all of our graduating grade 8 class of 2018 a

smooth transition as they get ready to begin their studies in their chosen secondary schools. Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic

School is confident that our students are ready to meet the challenges of high school life, make informed decisions and excel

in their studies, having been immersed in a caring French Immersion environment rooted in love for another and actions

made through the lens of social justice. We wish them much success this year.

Furthermore, the grade 8 students really enjoyed themselves during their three day cultural tour in Montreal, as they took

in the sights and sounds of Old and New Montreal, the Montreal Science Centre, St. Joseph Cathedral and Notre Dame,

Pointe-à-Callière Archaeological Site, and the Cosmodome. We anticipate that there will be many more exciting learning

and leadership opportunities throughout their time in secondary school.

Trustee Ward boundaries. Existing Trustee Wards, including the local Catholic schools they represent, remain unchanged

OLW PLAY DAY 2018

Play Day 2018 was a veritable blast for all of our students from our youngest Year 1 and 2 students to it Grade 7 and 8 leaders. Thank you to the Play Day committee for organizing and planning this happy event. A beautiful, sunny June day provided the perfect conditions for students to try their luck at a variety of fun and physically challenging activities, such as, speed Tic-Tac-To, water bucket full challenge, bowling, hula hoop race, ping pong ball in spoon race, parachute activity amongst other fun activities. Students enjoyed a cold freezie to end their activity circuit. Until Play Day 2019!

OLW ECO TEAM’S BATTERY DRIVE

Mlle. Falsetti and Our Lady of Wisdom’s Eco club led a battery drive, aligned with Me to We’s

global mission. Students called the charge by making morning announcements to introduce

students to this worthwhile campaign and collecting used batteries. The initiative effectively

helps to “provide life-saving treatments to children in Kenya, while ensuring batteries are kept

out of Canadian landfills,” addressing global zinc deficiency. OLW applauds the eco team’s

continued commitment to actively being responsible stewards.

CANADA SPIRIT DAY 2018

On June 28th, adorned in red and white, waving flags and beaming with pride for our great

nation, our youngest to oldest OLW students took some time out during a hectic final week of

school in June to reflect on and appreciate just what makes living in Canada singularly fantastic,

evident in our diversity and our love for another. Therefore, what a meaningful way to end the

year with song and celebration with our youngest Year 1 and Year 2 students leading the charge

with a beautiful rendition of the song, “Change My Heart Oh God.” May God continue to bless

our great nation for many years to come!

Date has changed to Tuesday May 7th 2019 in order to accommodate Bishop Nguyen’s availability.

OLW HEALTHY SNACK PROGRAM

In conjunction with the non-profit Angel Foundation at the TCDSB, please continue to support Our Lady of Wisdom

Catholic School’s universal nutrition and healthy snack program. The program will continue for the academic year, 2018-

2019 and has as its aim the provision of healthy snacks for all students which adhere to Canada’s Food Guide and

incorporate 3 food groups. The program is a non-profit initiative which is monitored by Toronto Public Health.

Snacks will be delivered to classrooms daily. Should you have any additional questions or concerns, please direct them to

Mrs. Shirley who is the nutrition program coordinator. Again, we would like to emphasize that the administration and the

program coordinator are well aware of allergies that students have and will take appropriate measures to ensure that the

program reflects these needs.

We ask that in order to sustain the program and keep it running efficiently that the parent community contributes a modest

donation of $10 or more to contribute towards the program. For donations of $20 or more, donor tax receipts will be made

directly by the Angel Foundation for Learning. Donations for the program can be sent to the main office via your child’s

homeroom teacher. The program accepts all cash and cheque donations made payable to “Our Lady of Wisdom

Catholic School Nutrition Program.” Thank you for your generosity. The well-being of our students is always our top

priority. We are confident that the program will serve the nutritional needs of our diverse student population well, and the

program will take into account the health and safety of all.

SPECIAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT AT THE TCDSB

ANAPHYLAXIS ALERT

Our Lady of Wisdom is an allergen aware school. There are students in attendance who suffer from severe and

life threatening allergies to certain foods such as peanuts, tree nut products, sesame seeds, eggs, seafood and

shell fish. Anaphylaxis is a severe and life threatening allergic reaction.

Accordingly, please DO NOT bring in snacks/treats/cake to acknowledge/celebrate a child’s birthday. A

safe practice that the school encourages is the distribution of non-edible birthday themed treats, such as,

pencils, erasers, stickers, etc… A reminder to parents that administration, teachers and support staff of the

TCDSB are NOT permitted to administer any type of prescription medication during the school day, unless we

have written signed authorization signed by you the parents and the prescribing physician. The forms to dispense

any medication may be updated on a regular basis and are available from the principal. Please send back the forms

for the administration of medication as soon as possible. Please be advised that staff will NOT dispense non-

protocol please contact the school principal. We kindly ask that parents refrain from sending foods containing

nuts to the school. Please do not send edible treats in for birthdays, a small token (pencils, or stickers) would

suffice.

IMPORTANT: If your child requires an EPI-PEN for anaphylactic emergencies THEY MUST WEAR one on

them AT ALL TIMES. Please supply an additional EPI-PEN for safe keeping in the office. We also

STRONGLY recommend ensuring that your child wear a medical alert bracelet to indicate ALL allergy or other

serious medical conditions they may have. The Office Requires an updated photo of your child, as well as, a

CANADA 150- CITY OF TORONTO LEGACY TREE PLANTING AT OUR LADY OF WISDOM

CATHOLIC SCHOOL

Celia Johnstone, Master of Forest Conservation and Tree Canada Community Adviser has

shared some fantastic news with the school, just prior to the end of the 2018-2019 academic

year. Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic School has been selected to participate in the Canada

150-City of Toronto Legacy Tree Planting project. OLW will be receiving a commemorative

sugar maple tree this fall, along with a distinct commemorative plaque. The school is

extremely honoured and excited to receive this gift of nature, which I’ve been told will

provide a massive canopy, natural shade, enhance existing ecosystems and serve as a symbol

of beauty for many years to come. The school is in the midst of preparing for this Legacy

event which is tentatively set for late fall towards the end of November. This tree planting

celebration will include students and staff of the school, members of the local community

including trustees and members of city council and the local media. Students will give a

short presentation, which may consist of verbal or visual pieces on the environmental, social

and economic benefits of trees, or a piece on Canada’s 150 year history or another relevant

piece to celebrate the event. OLW is looking forward to receiving this beautiful gift, as the

start of new enduring legacy.

MATH PROBLEMS OF THE WEEK: ( WWW.MATHCOUNTS.ORG )

1) HAPPY LEFT HANDERS DAY!

A) International Left Handers Day is celebrated each year in August. If the ratio of the number of days of

the month before International Left Handers Day to the number of days of the month after it is 2:3, on

what date in August is this special day observed?

B) Lucy typed a list of all the words she could type using only her left hand, while Ricky typed a list of all

the words he could type using only his right hand. Their lists had a combined total of 1632 words, but

Lucy’s list contained four times as many words as Ricky’s list contained. How many more words did

Lucy type than Ricky?

2) SUMMER FUNDS

Fiona has two part-time jobs during her summer vacation. She works part-time as a counselor at a local day

camp, and she has another part-time job as a life-guard at the community swimming pool. Fiona works a

combined total of 40 hours every week between the two jobs.

The first week working both jobs it rained all but one day, so three-fourths of the hours she worked that week

were at the day camp. How many hours did Fiona work at the pool the first week?

GRADE 3 EXCURSION TO ZION HOUSE

Mme, Mari Berje’s and Mme. Thokoly’s Grade 3 classes had the opportunity to take part in excursions to the

Historic Zion Schoolhouse on June 11th and June 19th respectively.

The students marveled at the chance to participate in a typical 1910 school day of the Edwardian era through

role-playing.

New Trustee Ward Boundaries for 2018 Municipal Election The Toronto Catholic District School Board at a Special Board Meeting on August 8, 2018 approved the establishment of

new Trustee Ward boundaries for the upcoming Municipal Elections on October 22, 2018. This was done to comply with

aligning ward boundaries with current provincial and federal ridings which included a directive to redistribute TCDSB

Trustee Ward boundaries. Existing Trustee Wards, including the local Catholic schools they represent, remain unchanged

and the new boundaries DO NOT come into effect until December 1, 2018. For a map of the new boundaries visit:
