- 2 - Our Lady of Victories, Harrington Park/River Vale N.J. Why is May MARY’S Month?

Though May is a contraction of the name Mary, the month was probably named for Maia Maiesta, the Roman goddess of grain. Each year, on the first day of May, the ancient Romans likewise honored Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers, who was repre-sented by a small statue wreathed in garlands; processions of singers and dancers would carry Flora’s statue past a sacred blossom-decked tree. Later, festivals of this kind spread to other parts of Europe, reaching their height in England during the Middle Ages. Dances around flower-bedecked maypoles were common, and festivities often blossomed into riotous and wild occasions. Often a May queen was chosen as part of the festivities. Devotions, specifically to Our Lady, on the first days of May date to St. Phillip Neri (16th century), who began the custom of decorating the statue of the Virgin with spring flowers. Then, after Annibale Dionisi, an Italian Jesuit, proposed devotions to Mary throughout the entire month, the Church did incorporate the pre-Christian May celebrations and gave them a Christian dimension – as it had done with many other pre-Christian customs.

Mothers Day Memorials Mothers Day is next Sunday, May 10. If you would like a loved one to be remembered at Mass during the month of May, please mail an envelope (any envelope) to OLV Rectory, 81 Lynn St., Harrington Park, NJ 07640. Please include the name of person to be remembered, whether they are living or deceased - and your name so your offering can be recorded with your donations.

World Day of Prayer for Vocations Today the Holy Father has asked all Catholics to intercede for vocations. Will you make a special effort to ask the Lord for more vocations to the priesthood and religious life? Pray for the priests who have ministered to you throughout your

life, both living and dead. Keep our parish priests and deacons in prayer throughout the

week. Encourage your children or grandchildren to consider a vocation

as a priest or religious brother or sister. Pray a rosary for more young men and women in our diocese to

respond to God’s call. Offer your sufferings, inconveniences, humiliations for vocations.

A Prayer for Vocations God our Father, You made each of us to use our gifts in the Body of Christ. We ask that You inspire young people whom You call to the priesthood and consecrated life to courageously follow Your will. Send workers into Your great harvest so that the Gospel is preached, the poor are served with love, the suffering are comforted, and Your people are strengthened by the sacraments. We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen.

“The Lord’s call is not an intrusion of God in our freedom; it is not a “cage” or a burden to be borne. On the contrary, it is the loving initiative whereby God encounters us and invites us to be part of a great undertaking. He opens before our eyes the horizon of a greater sea and an abundant catch.” -Pope Francis, 2019 World Day of Vocations

Fr. Wojciech’s Corner This Saturday 32 children from our parish would have received their First Holy Communion. Due to COVID-19, the celebration is postponed. I wanted to greet all the children and their families. As their waiting becomes longer and their hunger for the Lord greater, I wish and pray that all of you keep being brave in your patient waiting for the Holy Eucharist, to which Saint Ignatius of Antioch referred as the "medicine of immortality." May the day of your 1st Holy Communion be unique. The 4th Sunday of Easter is traditionally called Good Shepherd Sunday. On that day we pray especially for vocations. As a way of celebrating that day OLV Holy Name Society together with the CCD Office organized a virtual discussion on vocations that will take place right after our Live Streamed Mass, this Sunday, May 3rd. I will never forget a beautiful story of a priest friend of mine who would never have become a priest had it not been for a prayerful parishioner who stopped by him when he was still a young man. That parishioner told him, maybe you should consider becoming a priest. Just that. Today, he is a priest. There are many young people who have vocations, but they are afraid. But if a word, a prayer … there would be many more. I encourage everybody together as a family to say a prayer for vocations that you can find in next column. Also, we can offer our sufferings for new vocations. The Month of May is the month of Mary. I encourage all of us to recite the Holy Rosary. I remember as a kid, we used to gather with kids from our neighborhood to recite Holy Rosary at my house or theirs. Maybe that would be a great idea to gather within the family or outside with some neighbors (socially distanced), but spiritually united reciting this powerful prayer.

*** The Immaculate alone has from God the promise of victory over Satan. She seeks souls that will consecrate themselves entirely to her, that will become in her hands forceful instruments for the defeat of Satan and the spread of God's kingdom." - St. Maximilian Kolbe

Renewing the Consecration of the United States to the Care of Our Blessed Mother

As the world continues to face the ongoing effects of the global pandemic of the coronavirus, Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin joined with US and Canadian bishops on May 1st in renewing the consecrations of the two nations to the care of our Blessed Mother. Through a collective dedication or entrustment of a nation to Mary, an act of consecration is meant to be a reminder to the faithful of the Blessed Mother’s witness to the Gospel and to ask for her effective intercession before her Son on behalf of those in need. The consecration on May 1st follows a similar action of the bishops’ conference of Latin America and the Caribbean (CELAM) who consecrated their nations to Our Lady of Guadalupe on Easter Sunday. This prayer reaffirms and renews previous Marian entrustments, and it unites us in solidarity with our Holy Father, who recently established the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, as a source of protection and strength. The title “Mary, Mother of the Church” was given to the Blessed Mother by Pope St. Paul VI at the Second Vatican Council, and a memorial under the title was added to the Church’s liturgical calendar in 2018. Pope Francis declared that the Monday after Pentecost should be celebrated as the memorial of “Mary, Mother of the Church.” Cardinal Robert Sarah, head of the Vatican’s Congregation for Divine Worship, said that the addition of the memorial aimed to encourage growth in “genuine Marian piety.” Celebrating the memorial in 2018, Archbishop Gomez said that “when Jesus rose from the dead and ascended into heaven, Mary became the maternal heart of his Church.” “This will give the Church the occasion to pray for Our Lady’s continued protection of the vulnerable, healing of the unwell, and wisdom for those who work to cure this terrible virus,” Gomez said. “In this Easter season we continue to journey with our Risen Lord that among the graces of this time may be healing and strength, especially for all who are burdened by the many effects of the COVID pandemic,” he said in his letter to bishops.

Prayer for the Safety of Soldiers Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in You will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of Your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of Your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise You for Your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Pray for Our Sick Please Pray in the name of JESUS, the Healer, that the sick of the Parish may be restored to health and all those who assist and care for the sick will be given the strength to continue God’s Will: baby Cor-delia, baby Emmet Fischer, baby James Amicucci, baby Jonathan, Billie Anzalone Richard Bolton, Robert Brawley, Dominic Carini, Sal Cenicola, Helen Choma, Kevin Columbo, Marie D’Ascenzo, Maryann Dean, Lorraine Degerdon, Isabelle DeLeonibus, Vincent DePaola, Marge Devitt, Carl Falasca, Jay Filippone, Marie Filippone, Mary Fo-ley, Amy Hartwell, Peter Kellar, Milan Krupa, Mary Lowe, James McGarry, Robert Milli, Gianna Moscatello, John Pal, John Peterson Jr, Joan & Buddy Phalon, Marie Piazza, Canice Prince, Louise Ricciardi, Vincent Ricciardi, Veronica Romanchuk, Beth Sacco, Anthony Sanchez, Mike Tobia, Brian, Carla, Chris, Christina, Dierdre, Edward, Elba, Fiona, Jennifer, Joann, Lisa, Liz, Lucas, Lynn, Michael, Patrick, Paul, Peter, Robert, Roseann, Sean, Sharon.

Spiritual Communion composed by Cardinal Rafael Merry del Val As I cannot this day enjoy the happiness of assisting at the holy Mysteries, O my God! I transport myself in spirit at the foot of Thine altar; I unite with the Church, which by the hands of the priest, offers Thee Thine adorable Son in the Holy Sacrifice; I offer myself with Him, by Him, and in His Name. I adore, I praise, and thank Thee, imploring Thy mercy, invoking Thine assistance, and presenting Thee the hom-age I owe Thee as my Creator, the love due to Thee as my Savior.

Apply to my soul, I beseech Thee, O merciful Jesus, Thine infinite merits; apply them also to those for whom I particularly wish to pray. I desire to communicate spiritually, that Thy Blood may purify, Thy Flesh strengthen, and Thy Spirit sanctify me. May I never forget that Thou, my divine Redeemer, hast died for me; may I die to all that is not Thee, that hereafter I may live eternally with Thee. Amen.

- 4 - Saturdays are dedicated to Our Lady. DID YOU KNOW The year 2020 marks the 150th anniversary of Pope Pius IX proclaiming Saint Joseph, the foster father of Jesus, as the patron of the Universal Church, in his 1870 decree “Quemadmodum Deus.”

SPIRITUAL EXCERPT Happy, indeed sublimely happy, is the person to whom the Holy Spirit reveals the secret of Mary, thus imparting to him true knowledge of her. Happy the person to whom the Holy Spirit opens this enclosed garden for him to enter, and to whom the Holy Spirit gives access to this sealed fountain where he can draw water and drink deep draughts of the living waters of grace. That person will find only grace and no creature in the most lovable Virgin Mary. But he will find that the infinitely holy and exalt-ed God is at the same time infinitely solicitous for him and understands his weaknesses. Since God is everywhere, He can be found every-where, even in hell. But there is no place where God can be more present to His creature and more sympathetic to human weakness than in Mary. It was indeed for this very purpose that He came down from heaven. Everywhere else He is the Bread of the strong and the Bread of angels, but living in Mary He is the Bread of children. -- from The Secret of Mary, by Saint Louis Marie de Montfort

Before, by yourself, you couldn't. Now, you've turned to our Lady, and with her, how easy!"

-St. Josemaria Escriva

She was so famous and yet... She did not attempt to trade calling for fame

People were openly skeptical about why the Blessed Virgin would appear to a girl who was functionally illiterate, who at the time of the first apparition had not even made her First Communion. Bernadette was so unimportant! She lived with her family in a one-room cottage that had once served as a jail! But Bernadette was spiritually indifferent to the doubts and verbal rocks thrown her way. With unfailing simplicity and calm, Bernadette shared what had happened - nothing more and nothing less - about the eighteen times in six months that she saw Our Lady. When investiga-tors changed her words or tried to add to them, she corrected them. When they asked what it meant when Our Lady said, “I am the Immac-ulate Conception,” she said it was not her responsibility to explain these things, only to share the message. And when the visions ceased, Bernadette did not make a single attempt to trade on her fame. She entered a convent - not leaving even for the dedication of the Lourdes Basilica. When someone asked why she herself, sickly her entire life, was not cured by the waters, Berna-dette responded: “The Blessed Virgin perhaps desires for me to suffer. I need it.” It can be tempting to do some self-aggrandizement, to inflate our own importance to the well-being of our family, our parish, or our employer. Yet we are all only vessels for God’s work in the world. May we, as Bernadette did, respond to the profound gifts we are given with humility, modesty, and clarity. “From this moment on, anything concerning me is no longer of any interest to me. I must belong entirely to God and God alone. Never to myself.” - -Saint Bernadette Soubirous.

- 5 - May is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

How Can We Honor Mary this Month? Pray the Rosary The Rosary is the Marian devo-tion par excellence. When people think of Marian devotion, they usually think of the Rosary. If you do not pray the Rosary regularly, then consider making May the month when you commit to praying it every day.

Pray the Regina Caeli You might hear Church bells ring daily at 6AM, 12PM - Noon, and 6PM. Those bells indicate the traditional time of praying the Angelus, a prayer which focuses on the incarnation. From Easter Sunday through Pentecost, the Regina Caeli replaces the Angelus Prayer. The Regina Caeli focuses on Easter joy, and the resurrec-tion of Jesus. Try praying it at least once each day, if not all three times. If you cannot observe the traditional Church times, then consider praying it before breakfast, lunch, and supper.

Regina Caeli Queen of Heaven, rejoice, Alleluia

The Son, whom you merited to bear, Alleluia Has risen, as He said, Alleluia

Pray for us to God, Alleluia V. Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary, Alleluia

R. For the Lord has truly risen, Alleluia

Let us Pray: O God, who through the resurrection

of Your Son Jesus Christ gave rejoicing to the world grant, we pray, that through His Mother, the Virgin Mary, we may obtain the joys of everlasting life.

Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

VIRTUAL DISCUSSION ON VOCATIONS

Sunday, May 3rd is World Day of Prayer for Vocations. To commemorate the day, we invite you to view the movie "Sr. Clare Crockett: All or Nothing" (available on our web-site at olvhp.org) and join us in a VIRTUAL discussion of the movie, following the 9:30AM LiveStream Mass. The discussion will be hosted by OLV Holy Name Society and CCD Office. We will end by 11:30am so you can go outside and see Jesus when Fr. Wojciech drives by. Here is a brief synopsis of the movie: “A young Irish woman who died in an earthquake in Ecua-dor almost four years ago has become famous around the world since her tragic death. Sister Clare Crockett was a self-confessed party girl with a promising show business career, but she turned her back on fame to follow God when she joined the Servant Sisters of the Home of the Mother at just 17. Since her tragic death at just 33, many miracles have been attributed to her intercession. For more info on how to register, please find on our web-site: olvhp.org

White Lily of the Trinity The following day, as Gertrude prayed, the Mother of God appeared to her, in the presence of the ever-adorable Trinity, under the form of a white lily, with three leaves, one standing erect, and the other two bent down. By this she understood that it was not without reason that the Blessed Mother of God was called White Lily of the Trinity, since She contained in herself, with more plenitude and perfection than any other creature, the virtues of the Most Holy Trinity, which she had never sullied by the slightest stain of sin. The upright leaf of the lily represented the omnipotence of God the Father, and the two leaves which bent down, the wisdom and love of the Son and the Holy Spirit, to which the Virgin approaches so nearly. Then the Blessed Virgin made known to her that if anyone salutes Her devoutly as the White Lily of the Trinity and vermilion rose of Heaven, She will show how she prevails by the omnipotence of the Father, how skillful she is in procuring the salvation of men by the wisdom of the Son, and with what exceeding love her heart is filled by the charity of the Holy Ghost. The Blessed Virgin added these words: "I will appear at the hour of death to those who salute me thus in such glory, that they will anticipate the very joys of Heaven." From this time the Saint frequently saluted the Holy Virgin or her images with the below words:

"Hail white lily of the ever peaceful and glorious Trinity! Hail, effulgent rose, the delight of Heaven,

of whom the King of Heaven was born and by whose milk He was nourished!

Nourish our souls by the effusions of thy Divine influences." (Known as the 'Hail Mary of Gold' prayer)

—The Revelations of St. Gertrude, Book 3, Chapter 18

The value of life does not depend upon the place we occupy. It depends upon the way we occupy that place.
