Please join us in prayer this week for :
First Sunday of Lent Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church March 10, 2019
From the Pastor:
In his Jesus of Nazareth, Pope Benedict XVI wrote about today’s Gospel:
At the heart of all temptations is the act of pushing God aside because we perceive him as secondary, if not actually superflu-ous and annoying, in comparison with all the apparently far more urgent matters that fill our lives. Constructing a world by our own lights, without reference to God, building on our own foundation; refusing to acknowledge the reality of anything be-yond the political and material, while setting God aside as an illusion—that is the temptation that threatens us in many varied forms. Moral posturing is part and parcel of temptation… It pre-tends to show us a better way, where we finally abandon our illusions and throw ourselves into the work of actually making the world a better place. It claims, moreover, to speak for true realism: What’s real is what is right there in front of us—power and bread. By comparison, the things of God fade into unreality, into a secondary world that no one really needs. God is the issue: Is he real, reality itself, or isn’t he? Is he good, or do we have to invent the good ourselves? The God question is the fundamental question, and it sets us down right at the crossroads of human existence
This Lent, ask Jesus to help us see God and the world as it really is, living for God alone.
With love and prayers, Fr. Francis

Remembering those we love during
the holy season of Lent
Lent is a perfect time to consider a Me-morial Donation of Altar Bread and Wine to remember the birthday or anniversary of a loved one who has died or to keep their memory in mind during this season of prayer. The name of your loved one along with the name of the person making the request will be printed in the Bulletin and they will be remembered in a special way by the Priests as they cele-brate Mass.
We will also continue to take requests for the Tabernacle Candle Memorials for the Church or the Chapel. Please call the Parish Office (359-1230) for more information.
Fast and
Abstinence
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of
fasting and abstinence from meat for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence.
Fasting is an obligation from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. Abstinence means not eat-ing meat or other foods prepared with meat prod-ucts. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding from age 14 onwards.

Guidelines for Reserving Masses : We are happy to share that the guidelines for reserving Masses, now in place, have made it possible for many more members of our parish family to remember their loved ones on days and dates that are meaningful for them. Your understanding and support is sincerely appreciated. In the Christan spirit of loving and helping each other, please note the follow-ing: 1. With the agreement of both persons who are requestng a Mass, the Mass can be offered for TWO intentions. When you come to the rectory to request a Mass you will be asked if you would agree to sharing that Mass with someone else for whom that day is significant. If you do, a note will be made in the Mass book. The Mass is a most powerful prayer and God will bless your kindness, under-standing and generosity of spirit.
2. To make it possible for as many members of our parish family as possible to remember their loved ones on days and dates that are meaningful for them, during the first week the Mass book is open: a) An individual or household may reserve up to three weekend Masses. b) For weekday Masses, including Saturday at 9 AM, an individual or household may reserve up to four Masses for the same individual on the same day of the week at the same me. ( Ex. Up to 4 Masses on Thursdays at 8 am for Joe Smith)
3. You may call the rectory (359-1230) during business hours to reserve a Mass and then follow up with your dontion. Please remember, however, that when the Mass book first opens there may be significant wait time as the secretary attends to those in the office. Thank you for understanding.
