S S E “A F , I ”
Today we hear one of the most beau ful gospel readings of the Easter Season. The disciples, filled with fear, are locked away trying to keep away those they believed might harm them because of their faith in the Lord Jesus. In the midst of that fear, “Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, ‘Peace be with you’” (John 20:19). Here is the joy of Easter, the Lord stands in our midst and offers us the gi of peace – a gi that only he can give. Jesus stands among the disciples and stands with us as well but not just to give us a feeling of peace and contentment. The Lord charges the first disciples and us as well to be his messengers and to do his work in the world. There is urgency to the message that Jesus speaks to the disciples: “As the Father has sent me, so I send you” (20:21). The disciples did take the message of the Risen Christ in their midst and preached it to every corner of the word. Pope Francis spoke of the joy of Easter:
The Church throughout the world echoes the angel’s message to the women: ‘Do not be afraid! I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for he has been raised. Come; see the place where he lay’ (Mt 28:5-6). This is the culmina on of the Gospel, it is the Good News par excellence: Jesus, who was crucified, is risen! This event is the basis of our faith and our hope. If Christ were not raised, Chris anity would lose its very meaning; the whole mission of the Church would lose its impulse, for this is the point from which it first set out and con nues to set out ever anew. The message which Chris ans bring to the world is this: Jesus, Love incarnate, died on the cross for our sins, but God the Father raised him and made him the Lord of life and death. In Jesus, love has triumphed over hatred, mercy over sinfulness, goodness over evil, truth over falsehood, life over death. That is why we tell everyone: ‘Come and see!’ In every human situa on, marked by frailty, sin and death, the Good News is no mere ma er of words, but a tes mony to uncondi onal and faithful love: it is about leaving ourselves behind and encountering others, being close to those crushed by life’s troubles, sharing with the needy, standing at the side of the sick, elderly and the outcast, “Come and see!” Love is more powerful, love gives life, love makes hope blossom in the wilderness. With this joyful certainty in our hearts, today we turn to you, risen Lord!
In the midst of this sending of the disciples by the Risen Lord we meet the figure of Thomas “called Didymus, one of the Twelve” (20:24). Thomas is not present when the Risen Lord appears to the other disciples and so the disciples naturally want to share the news of the presence of the Risen Jesus among them with Thomas, one of their own: “We have seen the Lord” (20:25). But Thomas does not accept the message, he doubts: “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe” (20:25). Perhaps Thomas was so shaken by the death of Jesus on the cross that he could not imagine that Jesus would rise from the dead. Thomas wants to have assurance that Jesus is really risen before he places faith in this message that he has heard from the other disciples.
Page 5 April 23, 2017 - Second Sunday of Easter
Pastor’s Message (...continued from Page 4)
And so a week passes and the disciples are once again indoors; it would seem that the message and appearance of the Risen Lord has yet to calm all of their fears. And so Jesus appears to them once again: “Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said, ‘Peace be with you’” (20:26). Jesus does not give up on the disciples and he is not deterred by Thomas’ apparent lack of faith: “Then he said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe’” (20:27). Jesus is telling the disciples to accept this gi of new life and freedom from sin that he has won for them through his death and resurrec on. Finally, Thomas is moved to faith: “Thomas answered and said to him, ‘My Lord and my God!’” (20:28). Jesus does not chas se Thomas for his lack of faith, for his need to touch the physical wounds of Jesus, he does not praise him either but he does single out for special men on those “who have not seen and have believed” (20:29). That is us. We have the gi of faith in the Lord Jesus and we share that faith with others through our faithful living of the Gospel message. Jesus conquered sin and death and calls us to personal friendship, communion with him: “that through this belief you may have life in his name” (20:31). During the Easter season we celebrate this gi of newness of life that we receive through the Lord Jesus and we recommit ourselves to being his messengers to others. The gi of our faith in the Lord is not a treasure that we keep locked away rather it is a gi that we want to give to others as a gi . We celebrate this Easter season with joy and we pray for an increase of faith, hope, and love so that we might be faithful followers of the Lord.
C Congratula ons to the forty-six young people of our parish that were confirmed by Bishop Serratelli on Tuesday, April 18th. A er preparing for more than two years to receive the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of Confirma on these great young people can take pride in their commitment to their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and the Church that he founded. We congratulate them and their families and pray that the seven-fold gi s of the Holy Spirit will help them all of their lives to stay close to the Lord and his Church. A special word of thanks must go to Ms. Trish Filiaci and all of the catechists who have worked with our young people in the Confirma on program; Ms. Filiaci and the catechists faithfully give of their me to share the gi of faith with our young people and we are blessed by their presence and service in our parish. I especially want to thank the parents of these young people for their commitment to raising their children in the faith and seeing them through to this moment. It is a privilege for our parish to assist parents in sharing the gi of faith. Thank you!
E F M Thank you to all of those who made dona ons in memory of departed loved ones through the flowers that decorate our church during Easter. Thank you for your generosity that gives praise to the Risen Savior and honors the sacred memory of departed ones. We pray that they are at peace in the presence of the Risen Lord who calls them to eternal life.

A special word of thanks and commenda on belongs to Ms. Stella Crispo, our choir and instrumentalists for all of their hard work in preparing to lead us in song during Holy Week and at Easter. It is impossible for me to count the number of people who commented on the quality, faith, and joy expressed in the music for the Sacred Triduum and Easter Sunday. It takes many hours of prac ce for the choir to sound as good as they do and we thank them for adding so much to our worship and praise of God in the sacred liturgy. Thank you to Ms. Crispo and every instrumentalist and choir member! God bless you all for your faithful service to our community.

It is Mom’s Day! With Easter arriving so late this year, Mother’s Day is sort of sneaking up on us. But there are few days in the year that are as important as Mother’s Day. We honor our mothers, we respect them and we love them. We ask God to bless them with good health and we pray that their faithful nurturing of their children will come back to them as a blessing. We also pray for those mothers who have gone home to the Lord. May they rest in the peace of the Good Shepherd who calls them to eternal life and promises them light, happiness, and peace. If you would like to remember your mother with a Spiritual Bouquet, a remembrance in Masses here at Our Lady of the Holy Angels, please use the cards at the doors of the church. Both living and deceased mothers can be remembered with Spiritual Bouquets. Please return the envelope to the collec on basket or to the parish office by Sunday, May 7th.

Faith Formation Corner Attention 2nd Grade Parents As weekly mass is an integral part of our lives as Catholics, it is important that our children attend weekly mass. This is especially important as they prepare for the Sacrament of First Eucharist and equally important after they receive their Sacrament. While our parish offers many masses during each weekend for us to attend, during the next several weeks, we require that all children who will soon receive the Sacrament of First Eucharist, attend the Sunday 9:30 AM mass together as a group. Attending mass together began on Sunday, February 26, 2017 and continues through each of the remaining weekends of preparation.
These dates that your children will be attending 9:30 mass together are as follows:
4/23, 4/30
We require at least one parent or guardian to accompany and stay with the child during Mass. When you arrive, please sign the attendance form that will be located at the front and rear entrances of the church. After Mass please bring your child to their respective classroom for their weekly instruction.
Thank you for your cooperation and support. We Are STILL in NEED of Catechists! Our ability to provide effective programming for so many of our children enrolled in our program is only made possible if we have enough volunteers to serve as catechists. Please carefully review the information in the registration letter with regard to our need for Catechists and return the Catechist Volunteer Form that was enclosed in the registration packet to the ministry center ASAP. If you would like more detailed information about becoming a catechist, please contact Trish at [email protected] or leave a message at the Parish Ministry Center 973-256-5200.
