T F S L : “C . . .”
The parable of the prodigal son, which appears only in the Gospel of Saint Luke, always moves the heart toward the possibility of conversion and teaches us about the power of both humility and forgiveness. It is especially appropriate for Lent as it calls us to invest our me and our hearts in “coming to our senses” (15:17) as the prodigal son eventually did. At the heart this is a story of conversion of heart and redemp on of two sons, brothers, loved equally by their father. The father in the story demonstrates how extravagantly God loves us and highlights the truth that his mercy is never withheld from any one of us even when we are not at our best or when we fall into foolishness, jealousy and envy. The Parable has special significance during this Jubilee Year of Mercy called for by our Holy Father, Pope Francis. In a recent homily, the Holy Father noted: This Year of Mercy, Francis said, is also in part so ‘that we may know that the Lord is awai ng us, each of us.’ He is wai ng ‘to embrace us, nothing more, in order to say: ‘Son, daughter, I love you. I let my Son be crucified for you; this is the value of my love; this is the gi of love.’” The Holy Father challenges us to be open to the power of God’s mercy, which is always seeking us out in our brokenness.
Almost every one of the characters in this most famous of Jesus’ parables has personali es that we are able to iden fy with. We’ve probably met them or been them at one me or another in our lives. The younger son was exercising the judgment that many of us exhibit when we are young – we make decisions quickly, o en rashly, and on the basis of what we want in the moment: “The younger son collected all his belongings and set off to a distant country where he squandered his inheritance on a life of dissipa on” (15:13). Then there is the long suffering older brother who goes about his work faithfully, doing whatever his father asks of him without complaining or disobeying – at least outwardly: “Now the older son had been out in the field, and, on his way back, as he neared the house, he heard the sound of music and dancing. He called one of the servants and asked what this might mean” (15:25-26). The older brother does the right thing but he is resen ul and “holier than thou” as he does: “‘Look, all these years I served you and not once did I disobey your orders; yet you never gave me even a young goat to feast on with my friends” (15:29). Lastly there is the father. The father is like so many parents who try to be fair with all of their children.
Parents need to have the special gi of understanding who their children are as individuals, helping each child to grow in those areas where they will naturally excel and also encourage them in areas of weakness, giving them the security that they need to understand that no one is perfect and that each one of us has God given abili es and talents that are valuable for the work that God has given us breath to accomplish. Parents always want the fullness of life and joy for their children; the father in this story shows us that God wants that first for all of us. God our Father wants us to have joy and life and by example he teaches that one never comes to know a full meaningful, life through seeking to have someone else diminished.
The father loves both of his sons: “My son, you are here with me always; everything I have is yours. But we must celebrate and rejoice, because your brother was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found” (15:31).The father in this parable is of course a metaphorical representa on of God the Father who wants all his sons and daughters to be saved and to live in communion with him. Parents help their children to accept their mistakes, to learn to ask for forgiveness, and to depend upon the power of God at work in their lives.
God our Father does not play favorites; one life is not valued over another. Each human life is itself charged with the presence of the divine. The power of divine love dwells in our hearts through the Holy Spirit. It is a tremendously reassuring feeling to know that God accepts each one of us as we are, filled with poten al and flaws. There is nothing that can keep us from God’s presence. But God always calls us to conversion and change of heart when we need it.
We require the humility of the younger son who is brave enough to ask for his father’s forgiveness a er he had made one disastrous decision a er another. We also need to have the tenacity of the older brother who goes on doing what he should, refusing to be distracted from the work entrusted to him even when we think that there is li le thanks in it. And like the older brother we also need the humility to turn to the Father when we are having trouble understanding his will for us and ask what all of the various signs mean. Like the father in the story, God our Father always calls us away from that which does not seek the best for our brother or sister. One of the most beau ful lines in the parable of the prodigal son is found in the descrip on of the encounter between the father and the older son when the older brother refuses to enter the house when he learns of the feast for his younger brother because he is so blinded by fury. The gospel describes the father’s ac ons: “his father came out and pleaded with him” (15:28). Our Almighty Father pleads with us and asks us to hear the sound of his voice and to live in a way that makes us his faithful children. We are all like the prodigal. We are never abandoned. God our Father has given us his Son, Jesus Christ to be our Redeemer, our source of salva on. We have everything that we need to “come to our senses.” We have God’s word, the sacraments of salva on, and the support of our community of faith, the Church founded by Jesus Christ.
The days of Lent are rapidly passing. This is a good point in Lent to ask ourselves if we have really made any progress in le ng go of those things, anger, resentment, selfishness, and self-centeredness, that prevent us from being worthy of the name “children of God.” There is s ll me but we need to accept the invita on of God who always embraces and greets us with compassion. God wants us to ask for his mercy and to have that conversion of heart that makes us most of who we are. In his encyclical, Dives in misericordia (Rich in Mercy), Pope Saint John Paul II wrote:

Pastor’s Message (...continued from Page 4)

The parable of the prodigal son expresses in a simple but profound way the reality of conversion. Conversion is the most concrete expression of the working of love and of the presence of mercy in the human world. The true and proper meaning of mercy does not consist only in looking, however penetra ngly and compassionately, at moral, physical or material evil: mercy is manifested in its true and proper aspect when it restores to value, promotes and draws good from all the forms of evil exis ng in the world and in man. Understood in this way, mercy cons tutes the fundamental content of the messianic message of Christ and the cons tu ve power of His mission. His disciples and followers understood and prac ced mercy in the same way. Mercy never ceased to reveal itself, in their hearts and in their ac ons, as an especially crea ve proof of the love which does not allow itself to be ‘conquered by evil,’ but overcomes ‘evil with good.’ The genuine face of mercy has to be ever revealed anew. In spite of many prejudices, mercy seems par cularly necessary for our mes (no. 6).
The days of Lent call us to conversion of heart. There are many mes when we might feel as if we are lost but we are never beyond God’s mercy and we are always called to be a force for good in our society. Almighty God stands on the edge of eternity always looking for us and promises us that nothing will ever overtake us or leave us unable to cope if we believe in this mercy. No ma er which of the sons in the parable of the prodigal son that we might be at a given moment or period of our lives, we pray for the gi to “come to our senses” and do the things that we need to do in order to live the life of grace that our Almighty Father has in mind for us.

This is the season for real change and we shouldn’t allow the opportunity to pass us by. Think about returning to confession even if you have been away from the sacrament for a long me. This me is the perfect me. The Parable of the Prodigal Son that we hear in the gospel this weekend reminds us that God our Father is always standing on the edge of eternity and ready to run to us, embrace us, and to give us the gi of his mercy.
This Lent we once again take part in the “Welcome Home to Healing” ini a ve of the Diocese of Paterson. Lent is a special me of grace to approach the Lord and to seek his healing mercy; each Monday night of Lent between 7:00-8:30 one of the priests will be available for individual confession and absolu on. Confession will also be available at the regularly scheduled
me on Saturdays at 3:45 PM. Please take advantage of this opportunity to be a me of grace, peace, and joy so that your celebra on of Easter will find you renewed in heart and spirit. People some mes believe that they have been away from confession too long to ever return. Nothing could be further from the truth. The longer that you have been away from confession the greater your joy will be once you have received sacramental confession and face the day as a new person, free from burdens that you have been carrying again. Don’t worry if you can’t recall the form for confession, “Bless me, Father, etc.” or the Act of Contri on; the priest will be more than happy to assist you with the formula. This is a me to be welcomed home to the healing of the sacrament. Please take advantage of the opportunity to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconcilia on in Lent.
D M L
People o en ask: “What can I do for Lent.” There is no be er way to observe Lent than by taking part in daily Mass. Even making the me to take part in Mass on one day addi onal to Sunday will bring you a sense of making Lent a pilgrimage in which you are walking with the Lord. Think about making daily Mass a part of your Lenten observance.

Lenten Regulations on Fast and Abstinence
The Lenten regulations concerning fast and abstinence are as follows:
The days of both Fast and Abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence.
On a day of fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast. On a day of abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence. The obligation to observe the laws of fast and abstinence “substantially,” or as a whole, is a serious obligation. The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as penance. The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty - All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year) extends from the First Sunday of Lent to the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity.
