Messages from the Principal’s Desk Welcome everyone to the start of 2020. It has been a very smooth start and the first few weeks have felt like the students have been in their new classes forever. It was wonderful to see the students come through the gates each morning, happy and settled, and pleased to be at school. It was an extremely hot week to begin the year and as usual the students got onto their work and play without complaint. Our staff have been working hard to make the classrooms bright and welcoming; this along with consistent learning expectations and procedures has allowed the students to begin their learning for

the year with a positive frame of mind. A special welcome to our newest staff member, Mr Rob Murray, who will be our Head Grounds-Person. Rob has helped with keeping our lawns green and lush, even in this weather and we look forward to seeing the results of his work around the school. Congratulations to Mebin Scaria and Gisty George who recently welcomed a new baby girl into their family, Catherine Teres Scaria, a sister for Hannah. We wish them all the best.

Annual Community Meeting for 2019 On Friday evening, we held our Annual Community Meeting to report on the year that had been, 2019,

followed by our Welcome Dinner. The meeting always includes the Annual General Meeting of our School Board and P&F Association. Thank you to the members of these groups for their presence and reporting back to the school community on the year. We welcome Caitlin Bryant to the role of P&F Treasurer for the year and hope she enjoys this role. Our Annual School Improvement Plans for 2019 and 2020 were also reported on; this being the opportunity to keep parents informed about all the areas in which the school has and is seeking to improve their practice to improve outcomes for the students. We sincerely welcome those parents new to

our school community and hope their time spent as part of the family of OLMC will be a positive and inclusive one.

Positive Behaviours for Learning As part of the work our staff have been doing around our student management, this year we will be adopting a Positive Behaviours for Learning approach across the school, both inside and outside the classrooms. This approach works to create safe and effective environments for teaching and learning and for working within our school community and replaces the old system of having a set of school and classroom rules. Underpinning this school wide approach is the Fruit of the Spirit and our school motto, to “Love One Another”.

Ash Wednesday and the Season of Lent Next Wednesday, 26th February, is a significant event in the Church’s Calendar with Ash Wednesday marking the beginning of the Season of Lent. Mass will be celebrated in the Church at 9:00am and all of the students will have their foreheads marked with the blessed ashes as a reminder that from dust they began and to dust they will return. The day before Ash Wednesday, is named Shrove Tuesday, and on this day, each of the students will make a commitment for the Lenten Season and these will be offered up during a Burning Ceremony. Father Robert will burn palm leaves collected from Palm Sunday last year, along with the commitments. The ashes are then used to mark the students’ foreheads on Ash Wednesday.

Year Five/Six Ministries Our first assembly for the year will be led by the Year Five/Six class who will be presented with their Ministry badges and certificates that have been blessed by Father Robert. Each of the students are in charge of a particular ministry. Their roles are to plan and organise activities associated with their particular area. It has been wonderful to see the students accept their responsibilities in a mature fashion and prepare for their upcoming roles.

A Focus on Sustainability As part of the school’s commitment to working toward the National Quality Standards for our Junior Primary classes, this year we will be promoting sustainable practices within the school. The Kindy/Pre-Primary class will continue recycling food scraps in their worm farm. Other classes will introduce the recycling of cans and bottles, become Energy Savers around the school by checking on the use (or mis-use) of power and water around the school, and re-establishing “Waste Free Wednesday”, a day in which the students try to reduce the amount of waste to throw away in their lunch boxes. More information will be provided as we begin introducing these initiatives.

Swimming Lessons Swimming lessons began in Week One and all of the students have embraced them positively, taking on the challenge of increasing their swimming skills, and endurance where possible. The students are working hard to prepare for our Faction Swimming Carnival that will take place on Friday, 13th March.

School Uniform A huge thank you to all families for the effort you have made to ensure the students are presented beautifully in the new school uniform, as this year was the cut off for wearing of the old uniform. The students wear their uniform with pride; of particular note is the neat and tidy hair styles and beautifully worn school hair accessories.

School Contact Details A reminder that our school phone number has changed to (08)99 612200. All phone calls to our previous number will continue to be diverted to this new number for an initial period.

Tuckshop The first tuckshop for the year will be held this Thursday, 20th February. Health Care Cards If you hold a current Health Care Card please bring it into the school office this week so any discounts can be applied to fees.
