OUR LADY OF MOUNT VIRGIN, GARFIELD, NJ

May 10, 2020 - 5th Sunday of Easter “The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.” 1 Peter 2:7 Everyone is given unique gifts. Many people are able to recognize their talents and abilities, but there are many people who are unsure of their gifts. This may make them feel worthless. If you know someone who is struggling for a direction in life, give them a little encouragement. Help them discern how they might use their skills. No gift is too small or insignificant.

SPIRITUAL RENEWAL/EVANGELIZATION To Evangelize is to live out our Baptism Call! We preach the gospel and commit to Christ through these words of scripture: “By the mercies of God, I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, to present your bodies as living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.”

Romans 12:1

A Prayer for those working during the pandemic: O Lord, we ask you to watch over and keep safe those that go out to work each day. We pray first for healthcare personnel both in hospitals, nursing home and those who respond to emergencies, for police and fire fighters. We pray for clerks in stores, mail and package deliverers, public service workers, those who prepare take-out meals and those who deliver them, bank and postal workers, those who work in transportation, all radio and TV personnel, and for those that we may have forgotten. We remember that we are all brothers and sisters on this planet earth, and we ask for healing, strength, and the ability to live each day with gratitude. Amen

My Friends: Greetings to all on this Fifth Sunday of the Easter Season and as we also remember all women on this Mother's Day! I know how much this pandemic has and continues to affect our parish and our world as people continue to suffer and die worldwide. There is a profound feeling of helplessness and hopelessness and yet, we are never without hope. We are never without God's mercy. Two points from our Scriptures this weekend point us to this truth. The Psalm response, "Lord, let your mercy be on us as we place our trust in you." We must place our trust in the Lord, who then tells us in John's Gospel, "Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me." Yes, we will continue to feel all our feelings, but must hold steadfast in our faith and trust in the Lord; trust in God's mercy and while our minds may be troubled, let our hearts be at peace knowing that God will see us through. Together we sit, perhaps impatiently, awaiting a resolve, a cure, healing and a new beginning to what will become a new normal as this all unfolds. It will my friends. On this Mother's Day, as we place our faith and trust in God's mercy, may we all place ourselves under the mantle of the Blessed Mother of God and all humanity. What good mother will not protect her children and especially our Lady! Please check out our newly launched Parish Website at: https://www.mountvirgin.com. It is phenomenal and completely interactive. It contains all possibilities for you while at home or work for important parish information, registrations, communications and the chance to register for on-line giving. Please share it as well as part of your effort to assist in Evangelization. Thank you to everyone who continues to support the parish with your weekly contributions that you mail in or drop off. Please be safe and know that you are missed, prayed for and have all our prayers and support. Pray! Pray and then Pray some more...... Happy Mother's Day! Loving you always, Fr. Peter

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

ALL ACTIVITIES HAVE BEEN CANCELED.

About the Gospel: In the Bible we are reminded 365 times not to be worried; “Let not your hearts be troubled.” Jesus promises if we ask anything of the Father in His

name (if it is for our spiritual good) it will be granted. Jesus is in control, we must love Him and have faith. Visit www.usccb.org/bible/readings to read this Sunday’s Scripture. Family Prayer: Jesus, we want to trust You in all things. Give us the courage to ask You for what we need. Amen. Question of the Week: When is it difficult for you to trust Jesus? Life Question: Who do you trust when you are worried? Gospel Question: How does the Holy Spirit help you have faith in Jesus

Music Notes I feel bad for poor Thomas! "Where I am going, you know the way.” "Okay...that's great, Jesus, but what address am I putting in the GPS??" Like many of us, Thomas has

his mind focused on the here and now, on the nuts and bolts, on taking the next step that's in front of him. But, when Jesus tells him "I am the way, the truth, and the life," He's not avoiding the question - He's trying to shift Thomas's perspective from earthly matters to spiritual ones. In trying times like these, it's natural that we'd be focused on the nuts and bolts: What if I'm furloughed or laid off? How will we afford groceries? What if a loved one gets sick? How will we know when it's safe to end the quarantine? Where am I supposed to find toilet paper? These are big questions, and we want the answers, and we want them now. Jesus gently reminds us that we don't always get all the answers. And having all the answers doesn't always protect us anyway. Jesus had all the answers but He still was nailed to a cross. If the Son of God didn't get a "Get Out of Jail Free" card, then neither do we. Sometimes things break. Sometimes it just hurts. I don't know what the future of our Music Ministry will look like, or our church, or even what the future of The Church will look like in America. I don't know how or when we're going to reopen our doors, or what restrictions will be in place. I don't know if and when we'll be financially stable when the smoke finally clears. All we can do is take a deep breath, do the next right thing, and trust that even when we don't know the way, He does. Where we are going, He knows the way. For me, the next right thing is to keep making music. If you want to make music with us while we wait for answers, we'd love to have you, wherever you are. Please don't hesitate to email [email protected] and we'll get you making music from home with us.

Heal Me

My God and Father, healer of the sick, I turn to You in my time of need. Hear my prayer.

O God, grant me the courage to bear my pain, and the confidence to hope that I shall be well

for I rely on Your love.

Bless the efforts of my Doctors and Nurses. Endow then with your wisdom to heal.

Bless the efforts of all who seek to restore me to health. May it be Your will to restore me to health, that I may

complete my years in happiness and well-being. Permit me to return to my loved ones and to my tasks.

Bless me with insight and strength to serve You wholeheartedly.

Amen

Catholic Charities Bins To Open Again

Sentinel Management has notified Catholic Charities that our Donation Bins are anticipated to be open as of May 18th.

We are grateful for your patience and look forward to your continued support.

We need clothing, small appliances, shoes, linens, sheets, towels, stuffed animals, novels,

toys, knickknacks, and children’s books. We pray for an end of this virus in

our society and throughout the world. Thank you with all our heart.

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Updated directives regarding Catholic Cemeteries approved by Cardinal Tobin for the Archdiocese of Newark.

On Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 10, all archdiocesan

cemeteries will be open for visitation from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and will be open for visitation every Sunday, thereafter.

Beginning on Monday, May 11, up to 10 family members will be permitted to attend a burial service. (Currently, two family members only are permitted.) Until further notice, all committal services are limited to immediate family only and not to exceed the recommendations of New Jersey Executive Order No. 107 (2020) and Administrative Order 2020-04, that gatherings of 10 persons or fewer are permitted.

Beginning on Monday, May 18, cemetery visitation will be permitted weekdays, Monday through Saturday, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., after all interments are completed.

Memorial Day Masses at our all archdiocesan cemeteries are postponed until further notice. Announcements are forthcoming regarding a live-stream or video of Memorial Day Mass at Holy Cross Cemetery.

All persons entering archdiocesan cemetery and mausoleum premises must wear a facemask and practice social distancing as per the state’s mandate. Signs will be posted in cemeteries.

We urge all to please adhere to these guidelines for the protection of all. It would be disappointing to all if prior restrictions were reinforced if state and local mandates are not followed.
