JUNE 28, 2015 THIRTEENTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY

Talitha Koum! - Little girl, I say to you: Arise! – On this Sunday, believers are gifted with two beautiful stories from the Gospel of Mark. Those stories allow us to enter the heart of God and be amazed at how much compassion, tenderness and mercy we encounter in Jesus’ actions. First, there is a man who begs Jesus to cure his daughter. The Lord is moved to compassion and off He goes to fulfill Jairo’s request. Their journey is interrupted by a woman who has been suffering of hemorrhages for over twelve years. She also reaches out to Jesus and experiences healing and wellbeing as a consequence of her faith. They continue on their journey and as they reach Jairo’s house they are informed the little girl had just passed away. Deaf to the crying and the wailing of the people, the Lord enters the room where the child was and brings her back to life. These are two wonderful expressions of God’s mighty power that certainly moved the hearts of many to faith. When approaching the Gospel, we may not be surprised of the many miracles we encounter in those pages; extraordinary actions seem to be common happenings in the lives of those ancient characters of our faith. Many times when reading the lives of saints we encounter certain experiences that clearly show divine intervention and we are ok with that; however, if we were to dis-cuss the possibility of experiencing miracles in our contemporary experience no doubt many of us will struggle with that possibility. Even those who hold strong convictions in their faith life seem to feel somewhat uncomfortable when it comes to allowing the Lord to enter our ordinary life and change our history for good. Miracles tend to be far distant graces that we do not see as part of our everyday life. Our reason-ridden contemporary human history does not open the space for God’s intervention and thus alienates us from the possibility of Grace-transformed moments that will move our hearts to understand that, here and now, God’s power contin-ues to influence human history in incredible manners. Let’s hope that those stories we encountered today in the Gospel will influence the way we see miracles and the possibility of God entering and transforming our ordinary life into an extraordinary experience. May the Lord grant us the gift of faith and may our lives be showered with Graces that only God can provide. Adsum, (Al ver lo que Jesús había hecho) ¡Todos se quedaron asombrados! La página del Evangelio que nos ofrece la Iglesia este domingo, nos invita a contemplar dos acciones de Jesús que tiñen la historia humana con el poder de Dios. La suplica de un padre angustiado pone al Señor en camino, mientras se dirige a la casa de Jairo una mujer que sufre de flujo de sangre toca su manto con la esperanza de ser curada, el Señor se compadece de ella y gracias a su manifestación de fe le concede la sanación; al llegar a la casa del jefe de la sinagoga, les comunican que la niña acaba de fallecer, ignorando el llanto y el alboroto de la gente, Jesús entra al cuarto donde estaba la niña y la vuelve a la vida. Dos expresiones magnificas del poder de Dios que altera de manera positiva la historia humana. Las historias que leemos en la Escritura Sagrada, nos muestran el poder de Dios que continuamente trabaja a favor de los creyentes, las vidas de los santos nos confirman que esa capacidad tremenda de Dios para intervenir y transformar positivamente la historia humana es un privilegio de creyentes; sin embargo cuando se trata de abrir nuestra vida a la presencia de Dios que aquí y ahora puede hacer grandezas en nuestro favor, nos encontramos desconcertados. Pareciera que los milagros no son parte de la vida ordinaria de los creyentes contemporáneos, los creemos posibles pero difícilmente nos abandonamos con confianza en la providen-cia del Dios que a lo largo de la historia humana ha tocado la vida de tantos y hoy en día puede tocar y cambiar la nuestra. Los mila-gros no pueden encontrar lugar en un mundo tan altamente controlado por la razón, es necesario que los creyentes apostemos con el corazón y dejemos que sea este el que nos conduzca. Cuando nos resistimos a creer, bloqueamos la acción de Dios y no permitimos que la Gracia del Espíritu ejerza en nosotros la el poder del Señor. Es necesario plantarnos ante la vida con actitud de abandono en Dios, de tal manera que sea su fuerza y no nuestro esfuerzo el que logre que lo ordinario se vuelva extraordinario. Dejemos que las historias que hoy hemos escuchado del Evangelio según San Marcos, nos animen a creer que de verdad Dios puede hacer grandes cosas. Que seamos capaces de entender que cuando nuestro ingenio termina, allí precisamente comienza el actuar del Señor. Adsum,

Il brano evangelico di oggi ci conduce a riflettere sulla vita e sulla speranza di una vita senza fine. La vita è la realtà in cui siamo immersi, noi e coloro che amiamo tanto più sorprendente in quanto urta, nella sua fragilità, contro la malattia, e alla fine contro il limite ineluttabile della morte. È possibile credere nella vita e sperare, nonostante tutto?I due racconti ci offrono un modello di fede semplice e fiduciosa, quella di Giairo che vede morire la figlia di dodici anni, quella della donna disperata che sente la vita sfuggirle a poco a poco, col suo sangue. Queste due storie concatenate insistono infatti sul medesimo punto. Ingenua, quasi superstiziosa la fede dell’emoroissa, che tocca furtivamente Gesù nella speranza di essere guarita; il Cristo non la rimprovera, ma l’aiuta a raggiungere la consapevolezza di un atteggiamento personale che salva e dona la pace. Ben più grande, e quasi folle, la fede di Giairo, che non ha che il suo silenzio da opporre al disfattismo della folla. Per la gente che gli sta intorno, è fin troppo chiaro che di fronte alla morte nessuno può fare nulla; per Gesù, la morte è soltanto un sonno che conduce, attraverso la fede, a un alba di resurrezione. Nelle parole che egli usa, è già presente l’interpretazione cristiana del battesimo come partecipazione alla risurrezione del Cristo: «Svegliati, o tu che dormi, déstati dai morti e Cristo ti illuminerà» (Ef. 5,14).Come non pensare a ciò che dice Péguy a proposito della speranza? Essa dorme in ciascuno di noi, e bisogna regolarmente svegliarla, farla alzare, metterla in cammino. Una meraviglia possibile soltanto nella fede in Colui che può condurre le nostre notti più buie ad un’alba di pasqua. Il Cristo assumendo la nostra condizione umana, incontra delle situazioni disperate, la malattia e la morte. Egli partecipa a tali situazioni; ma prova per esse anche un vivo senso di ribellione. Egli vuole una umanità dalla quale tutto ciò sia bandito, e, appena se ne presenta l’occasione compie il miracolo per manifestare la sua ribellione al male e la sua fiducia assoluta nel Padre. Gesù non si limita a colpire il male dall’esterno: ha scelto di vivere egli stesso la disperata situazione umana, ma possiede la certezza di ricevere nella risurrezione un’umanità nuova, libera da ogni male.

Rehearsal for Choir meets in the St. Anthony room located on 22nd and Cortez from 7-8:30pm. Music will be in Latin, Ital-ian, and English. All are Welcome!

The Feast Committee and the Altar & Rosary Society are spon-soring the Rose Presentation for the 122nd Feast on Wednes-day, July 8, 2015; 6:00 PM - 7:15 PM prior to Novena. Bas-kets of roses will be available for $50.00 and must be ordered and pre-paid by July 6, 2015. Please make checks payable to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. Single roses will also be available at $1.00 each or $10.00 a dozen in front of church on that evening. Order forms for the roses are available in the rectory or on the table in back of the church. If you have any questions, please call the rectory.

OPEN HOUSE

The new addition to our Church (Restrooms, Garage and Storage Room) is about to be completed. We thank the Lord for the possibility to enjoy this much needed facilities. On Sunday July 5th, after all masses, you are wel-come to walk through and take a look at the gorgeous work we have done. It is my hope that all parishion-ers experience a sense of gratefulness as we dedicate these spaces We see these additions as a gift from God. I would like to take the opportunity to thank all those who dedicated so much time and talent to this project.

The parish office will be closed on Friday July 3rd.

FR. GIOVANNI BIZZOTTO, CS A Scalabrinian Missionary, Former Pastor of St. Peter’s Italian Church in Los Angeles, long time Vocation Direc-tor, and the current Rector of the Scalabrinian Seminary in Mexico City, will be the Novena Preacher for this year.

Fr. Giovanni was awarded with the Blessed be the Peacemakers award by the former Archbishop of Los Angeles (Cardinal Mahoney). He is a very enthusiastic preacher and a devoted missionary; people love his charm and his outgoing personality.

We welcome Fr. Gio in our Faith Community and look forward to be enriched with his wisdom and spirituality

Talità kum...Gesù sta insegnando, sta parlando del Regno di Dio, sta spiegando il compiersi dell'Antica alleanza e quella Nuova da lui rappresentata. C'è molta gente ad ascoltarlo. Sono al lago. Qualcuno si domanda: ma farà anche oggi dei miracoli? Gesù, però, non è interessato a quelle domande. Lui parla del Padre che è nei cieli. Il Padre Suo, il Padre nostro... Gli viene incontro un uomo - Giaìro. Non è una persona qualunque - è uno dei capi della sinagoga. Lo conoscono tutti, lo hanno sentito parlare anche lui... Forse farà qualche domanda, chiederà qualche spiegazione di un versetto della Scrittura...? Ma egli si prostra ai piedi del Signore e chiede con insistenza un aiuto: mia figlioletta è molto malata. Vieni a guarirla. Giaìro, con il suo gesto, mostra la sua fede. E' molto malata la figlia, ma per Dio non esistono le cose impossibili e lui ci crede. Gesù accetta. Si avvìano verso la casa sua, ma ecco arrivare un servo: "tua figlia è morta". Che tristezza per un padre sentire

questa notizia. Ma Giaìro è con Cristo. E Gesù lo consola. Hai creduto? Continua ad avere la fede. Ecco quello che può fare la fede. La fede in Cristo può perfino far risuscitare dai morti. Gesù ha riscattato dalla morte tutti, egli è il Dio con noi. Egli ha le parole di vita, e di vita eterna. E la nostra fede? Quanto è forte? Diciamo di credere ma poi? La nostra fede è viva o morta? L'abbiamo ricevuta, ma l'abbiamo anche coltivata, conservata? La fede è un dono. Dobbiamo chiedere il Signore, ogni giorno: Signore, aumenta la mia fede. Possa io credere in te, possa io fidarmi di te, con tutto il cuore; possa io chiudere gli occhi ed abbandonarmi nelle tue braccia aperte. Tu mi aspetti, Signore, sono io che ritardo. Dammi la mano ed àlzami dal sonno. Comandami come hai comandato alla ragazza morta: "a te dico, alzati". Fa' che io possa sentire la tua voce e seguirti sempre, dove vuoi tu.

Il Signore della vita Una certa saggezza, che ha avuto i suoi seguaci in tutti i tempi, e che oggi è favorita dalla mentalità scientifica positiva, tende a far accettare la prospettiva della morte con razionale serenità, senza paure, senza illusioni consolatorie, come una cosa naturale. Ma la realtà è più forte di qualsiasi dottrina. Sopraffatto dall'inesorabile certezza della morte, l'uomo si ribella contro di essa e dopo aver gustato il sapore della vita non vorrebbe mai più morire. Ha la chiara percezione che la morte è tutt'altro che lo sbocco naturale della vita. Essa è una violenza alla sua sete inestinguibile di vita.

Il progetto di Dio, il Vivente Anche nella visione della fede la morte è un fallimento della creazione, uno scacco della vita. Dio non ha creato l'uomo perché cadesse nelle spire del nulla: «Dio non ha creato la morte e non gode per la rovina dei viventi. Egli infatti ha creato tutto per l'esistenza » (prima lettura). La nostra istintiva paura della morte attinge la sua origine nelle primitive intenzioni di Dio. La morte non entrava nel piano di Dio. Essa è entrata per l'invidia del maligno, per il peccato dell'uomo. Questo ci rivela un volto nuovo del peccato: esso è l’anticreazione, un tentativo di autodistruzione dell'uomo, appunto, perché con esso l'uomo tronca i suoi legami con la fonte stessa della vita: Dio, il Vivente per eccellenza. Dio ci chiama alla vita. Da un capo all'altro della Bibbia, un senso profondo della vita in tutte le sue forme e un senso purissimo di Dio ci rivelano nella vita, che l'uomo insegue con instancabile speranza, un dono sacro in cui Dio fa risplendere il suo mistero. Al centro del Paradiso Dio aveva piantato «l'albero della vita» il cui frutto doveva far vivere per sempre (cf Gn 3,22). Il Dio che non si compiace nella morte di alcuno (cf Ez 18,32) si è rivelato, in Cristo, come il «Dio dei vivi e non dei morti». Dio è il Padre da cui ogni vita procede. Cristo, poi, è «il Verbo di vita per cui ogni cosa esiste», è «risurrezione e vita», è «il pane di vita» e chiunque mangia di lui ha già in sé la vita permanente; egli è la sorgente che zampilla vita eterna... I miracoli, specialmente le risurrezioni, testimoniano che egli è venuto a comunicare la vita; essi costituiscono il segno del destino cui l'umanità è chiamata: la vita eterna. Potremmo dire che il messaggio cristiano è tutto qui: chi partecipa al Cristo, partecipa alla vita. Dopo Cristo e la sua risurrezione, chi crede, anche se sa di dover morire, vede la morte come un momento per passare ad una vita senza fine. La morte diventa cioè un «passaggio», assume così il carattere pasquale di una vittoria.

Los invitamos a participar en grupos de apoyo y educativos gratuitos en el centro comunitario de nuestra iglesia.

Hay un grupo para personas en la tercera edad llamado, “Alegría y Tranquilidad.” En él, las personas hablan de problemas como depre-sión, enfermedades, y conflictos con los hijos. A través de diversas actividades los participantes aprenden prácticas que les permiten mejorar su calidad de vida. Asista los lunes a las 10:30 am. En el grupo, “Mujeres Seguras y Libres” las mujeres estudian concep-tos e implementan prácticas que les ayudan a mejorar su autoestima, a tomar sus propias decisiones y a tener más confianza en sí mismas para lograr sus metas. Asista los miércoles a las 6 pm.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Muchos hispanos que vivimos en Estados Unidos somos personas bilingües. Podemos leer la Palabra de Dios en inglés o español. Por ejemplo, el texto de Juan 21:15-19, en el que Jesús le pregunta a Pedro si lo ama. El texto en inglés nos dice que Jesús le pregunta tres veces: Peter, do you love me? Pedro le responde: Lord, you know that I love you, mientras que en español le dice: “Señor, tú sabes que te quiero”. La diferencia es casi imperceptible, pero importante. El texto original fue escrito en griego y usaba dos palabras que significan amor, ágape (amor que se sacrifica) y fileo (amor fraterno). En inglés, Jesús y Pedro usan la misma palabra, love, mientras en español Jesús dos veces pregunta por “amor”, y Pedro responde con “querer”. La tercera vez, Jesús se acopla a Pedro y sólo pregunta en torno al “querer”, re-conociendo que en ese momento, Pedro no puede darle más que eso. Jesús le asegura que algún día Pedro sería capaz del amor ágape entregando su vida por él. Jesús se acopla a nosotros pidiendo lo que le podemos dar y ayudándonos a crecer hasta que podamos darle toda nuestra vida.

EL SEÑOR DE LA VIDA En este tiempo tan fecundo del año nuestras lecturas domini-cales rebosan con vida y abundancia. Tanto la primera lectura, del libro de la Sabiduría, como la tercera del Evangelio de san Marcos nos aseguran que Dios no creó la muerte, ni quiere que suframos de ninguna enfermedad. Fue por la envidia del diablo que la muerte entró al mundo, según nos dice el Sabio. Y lo que san Marcos nos cuenta sobre la curación de la he-morroisa y cómo revivió la hija de Jairo nos muestran clara-mente que Jesús viene de Dios. Como Hijo de Dios, Jesús no quiere que nadie sufra enfermedad ni muerte. Pero en el con-texto de tanto poder, la segunda lectura, de la segunda carta de san Pablo a los corintios, nos presenta un fuerte contraste. Jesús, que puede levantar a los muertos a una nueva vida, “siendo rico se hizo pobre por ustedes” (2 Corintios 8:9). Así pues, la nueva vida que recibimos como regalo de Cristo exige una respuesta: nuestra caridad.

OBRA TERMINADA La construcción de los Baños la nueva cochera y la bodega esta siendo concluida en estos días. El Do-mingo 5 de Julio después de las misas tendremos la oportunidad de conocer la nueva construcción. Agradecemos a Dios la posibilidad de ver concluida esta obra y esperamos que podamos ver esta adición a nuestras instalaciones como una bendición de Dios.

Han sido meses de mucho trabajo. Agradecemos a quienes han donado su tiempo y talento en este Proyecto.

Reflecting on God’s Word These two stories are quite touching, perhaps because they involve so much touching—forbidden touching, as a matter of fact. The father starts it off by falling at Jesus’ feet and begging Jesus to help his dying daughter: “Come lay your hands on her that she may get well and live” (Mark 5:23). Only touching her will do. Then as Jesus is passing through the crowd, a woman suddenly appears on the scene, reaching out to Jesus and saying to herself: “If I but touch his clothes, I shall be cured” (5:28). Jesus knows immediately that he’s been touched: “Who has touched my clothes?” he asks (5:30). And the disciples wryly observe that the crowd is . . . well, crowd-ing him . . . so how can you ask “Who touched me?” It is important to remember that because the woman was bleeding, a condition that made her “unclean” according to the law of Moses, her touch would have made Jesus unclean. However, her touching Jesus has the opposite effect: the bleeding stops and she is made clean once again. When word comes that the little girl is dead, Jesus calls on the father to set aside fear and put on faith. Arriving at the house, Jesus goes in and takes the child by the hand and says, “Little girl, I say to you, arise!” (Mark 5:41). Sixteen times in Mark’s Gospel Jesus touches or takes someone by the hand. She does arise and he tells them to bring her some food. Again, touching her would have made Jesus unclean, but instead his touch cleanses her of death’s hold. Two desperate people—a dying girl and a bleeding woman. Jesus touches them and they both touch him—the woman through her own faith, the little girl through the faith of her father. It seems that healing depends on a flow between healer and the one being healed. The great news is that God allows a proxy. También en este caso el haber tocado a la niña hubiese hecho a Jesús impuro pero, por el contrario, al tocarla ella queda limpia y libre de la muerte. Dos personas desesperadas, una niña moribunda y una mujer con hemorragias. Jesús las toca a ellas y ambas lo tocan a él, la mujer por su propia fe y la niña por la fe de su padre. Tal parece que la sanación depende de una corriente entre el que sana y la persona que va a ser sanada. Es muy bueno saber que Dios acepta delegados.
