Food for Faith Living from the desk of Fr. Mark Today’s Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the King celebrates the reality of Who Jesus is and what His life, teachings, death and resurrection mean. It is salvation for the human family, a true reason for thanksgiving. Next week, Advent invites us to the cycle of preparation for His coming again amongst us. The process is for every generation, a path to holiness and fulfillment. Hailing Christ as King seems out of place in our times where monarchies are merely symbolic of past eras when and where kings and queens ruled over their subjects. Giv-en His life and death, the title King seems a disconnect. Sadly, yet fulfilling the awesome truths of redemption and salvation, the only proclamation of Jesus as King takes place on Calvary, where a sign is hung above His Head, announcing Him as King of Israel as the soldiers and by-standers mock Him to come down from the cross and save Himself. As in everything which God does to save us, all of us, it never takes the shape we imagine nor follows the way we think. God’s ways are not our ways! Thank God! No, salvation hangs and dies on a cross. The first beneficiary that Day? A criminal, crucified for his evil deeds. He honestly admits his crimes and sincerely makes a request which is the prayer of each and all of us: “Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.” Jesus tells him: “Today, you will be with Me in paradise.” A king, brutally beaten and mortally wounded, is God’s gift of salvation to all of us! Thus, is the power of faith, the strength of hope, and the promise of love, fulfilled in any and every person’s life if they believe and live their belief as Jesus will explain and demonstrate every time we listen to His Word. St. Paul says all this (2nd reading). We should read Paul’s letter to the Colossians 1:12-20 often: “Jesus has made peace by His blood on the Cross. He has delivered us from the power of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of God!” Truly, let us honor our Savior King by living our lives faithfully as He taught and requested.
