Father David Mullins—Our much loved Parish Priest Father David Mullins was Parish Priest of Our lady of Lourdes Parish from 2000 till 2009. How did this former “Pastoral Missionary” who spent 35 years in Tonga as Priest, administrator of rugby and amateur sports, Secondary school Principal, author, “fit in” to this suburban Auckland parish after achieving the gratitude and “special status” accorded to him by the Tongan nation?
He was appointed to the role as Parish priest of a fairly autonomous community who welcomed him as its first Marist priest, but was largely unaware of the extent of the prestige he was accorded by the country of Tonga. And so Father David accepted our parish and we accepted him for his energy and interest in all facets of life in the Parish. Always aware of the difficulties faced by new migrants, he ensured that they had "a little extra " often in the form of a TV set. Father David saw the need for a fitting tribute to Our Lady of Lourdes and it was his idea to convert the old confessional boxes into the beautiful grotto we enjoy now. During his time with us, the church interior was redecorated and "welcome" was engraved on the glass entrance doors in different languages. In his final retirement home at the Little Sisters of the Poor in Herne Bay, Father, always an adventurous cook, developed a useful vegetable garden outside his unit. Some of our parishioners remember his Christmas gift of fresh new potatoes. One day after Mass, Father remarked that he would like this hymn sung at his funeral--- it was "So I leave my boats behind----". and the words of this song sum up the priest and the man. Rest in Peace Fr David. We at Glen Eden will always remember you. Margaret Matterson
