Dear Friends, You might have noticed the new blinds in the Hall. They were much needed, especially during this time of the year. The blinds cost $8,000. Your church dollars being put to good use. Last Saturday, May 13th, was the 100th Anniversary of

Mary’s appearance at Fatima. our parishioners had a Rosary Rally at Miwok Park that day. I was told that over 70 people attended. Thank you Barbara, Kathy and Sheila for putting this together on such short notice. Last Sunday’s Mother’s Day was great. A lot of our mothers had big smiles on their faces. Thank you, Patsy, for getting the carnations and thank you, Knights, for the great breakfast. Moms, you deserve this and a whole lot more. Last Friday, Bishop Justice was here to confirm our high school students. Last Saturday, 17 of our school’s second graders received their First Holy Com-munion. Congratulations to everyone! I am so proud and happy to be your pastor. Thank you Annie and Katie, on a job well done. This coming Tuesday, May 23rd, at 11am is Al Olivier’s Memorial mass. Please join your fellow parishioners as we honor this long time parishioner. Have a Great Easter Week, Father Brian

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The cus-tom of genuflec-

tion is not found everywhere in the Catholic Church. In fact, it is a bit of breach of eti-quette to genuflect in most Eastern Catholic Churches. If you’re visiting an Eastern Cath-olic or an Orthodox church, the “when in Rome” rule should be adopted. Watch what the home team is doing! Usually, Eastern Catholics and Orthodox reserve a small por-tion of the eucharistic bread for the dying in a cupboard or eucharistic dove, but it is not a center of attention or devotion. The rule is to make a profound bow, called a “metasis,” to-ward the altar—bowing deeply while making the sign of the cross. East and West split years before we West-erners began to reserve the Blessed Sacra-ment prominently in our churches. Thus, the East never changed the original custom of bowing toward the altar. Increasingly, as tab-ernacles became more widespread in the West and moved into prominent placement within churches, we replaced the bow toward the altar with a genuflection toward the Blessed Sacrament when its place of reserva-tion is visible. In a church where the Blessed Sacrament is reserved in a special chapel or off the main axis of the building, normally you should bow toward the altar when you enter your pew, be-cause the eucharistic table is the principal sign of Christ’s presence in the church build-ing. If you have ever participated in the litur-gy of Dedication of a Church and Altar, there is no mistaking the altar’s significance: it is first slathered with chrism and then adorned with a brazier billowing clouds of incense that fill the whole church as a sign of prayer and presence!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT Our Second Collection for Catholic Charities last weekend, was $3,700.
