(November2-10,2016) Catholic Christians always have believed in the importance of praying for those who have died. We call this a spiritual work of mercy. We also believe that the dead pray for us — that they intercede for us as advocates. This means, of course, that we believe there is a real relationship that continues to exist between the living and the dead. And like all personal rela-tionships, we believe that our connection (communion) with those who have died is nourished and strengthened by per-sonal, and sometimes intimate, communication. As Christians, we do not believe in false or super i-cial forms of communication with the dead (seances or voo-doo or other forms of superstition). We communicate with those who have died through our prayer. Since the Mass is the "source and summit" of the Christian Life, we naturally look to that Holy Sacri ice of Christ, containing the perfect prayer, to offer for our de-ceased relatives and friends who may still need the help of our prayers. We believe that a Mass offered for them may help hasten their inal puri ication which they may still be undergoing in purgatory. Beginning Wednesday, November 2nd (All Souls Day), through Thursday, November 10th, we are going to cel-ebrate a Novena of Masses at our parish for the souls of our beloved departed. We will ask our gracious God to grant them forgiveness for their sins and reward their good deeds with everlasting peace and happiness. In today’s bulletin there is a special form where you may put the names of your loved ones who have already left this world (pleaseuseallcapitalletters). You may return this form by mailing it in the enclosed envelope, dropping it in the collection basket or bringing it to the parish of ice. Your deceased loved ones will be included in Novena Masses and their names will be entered in the Book of Remem-brance. This book will be placed on the altar during the Masses. The dates and times of the Novena Masses are as follows: November2nd(AllSoulsDay–Wednesday)at9:00am&7:30pm,November3rd,(Thursday)at9:00am,November4th(Friday)at9:00am,November5th(Saturday)at8:00am&5:00pm,November6th(Sunday)at8:30am&11:00am,November7th(Monday)at9:00am,November8th(Tuesday)at9:00am,November9th(Wednesday)at9:00amandNovember10th(Thursday)at9:00am. May the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. And may they pray for us always as we pray for them until we are all united with Christ on the Last Day in the place He has prepared for us. Parish Administrator

Q. Did everyone who died before Je-sus go to hell?

I was told that all the people who died prior to Jesus (including Moses/Abraham and everyone else, even those who were trying to live for God) went to hell regard-less. Is this true?

A. By his death and Resurrection, Jesus opened heaven

(Catechism, 1026). Prior to that time all who died went to “hell” howev-er, the just went to a place in hell referred to as the “Bosom of Abra-ham” where they would be comforted. The parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31) indicates that there were two parts of hell. Both Lazarus and the rich man died and went to hell, but Lazarus was comforted in the bosom of Abraham while the rich man was in a place of torment. A great chasm separated the two parts. The Catechism explains, “Scripture calls the abode of the dead, to which the dead Christ went down, "hell"—Sheol in Hebrew or Hades in Greek—because those who are there are deprived of the vision of God. Such is the case for all the dead, whether evil or right-eous, while they await the redeemer: which does not mean that their lot is identical, as Jesus shows through the parable of the poor man Lazarus who was received into "Abraham's bosom": "It is precisely these holy souls, who awaited their Savior in Abraham's bosom, whom Christ the Lord delivered when he descended into hell." Jesus did not descend into hell to deliver the damned, nor to destroy the hell of damnation, but to free the just who had gone before him” (Catechism, 633)
