A special welcome to 3 new students – Pitiluca and Jetagon Matassa and Eryn Law. The Matassa family have a strong connection with our community and will be with us just for the duration of Term 3. Piti will be in Year 3 for that period of time and Jet will be in Pre-Kindy. We also welcome Eryn into our Year 5 class. Mrs Cath Pratley will be with us for Term 3 as well, as the replacement for Vanessa Byrne who is completing her final teaching practicum before becoming a qualified Primary School Teacher. Pip Nimmo is also with us “fulltime” this week covering for Oz Celenza who is on Long Service Leave. Last term finished with a real highlight on the afternoon of the last day with the culmination of the Public Speaking programme. Congratulations to the 11 children who were chosen to present their speeches in front of the whole school: Joshua Farinola (Year 1), Samantha Johnston (Year 2), Will Maddeford and Hugh Farquhar (Year 3), Ethan Walters and Luke Farinola (Year 4), Anastasia Smith and Jude Foss (Year 5) and Jenna Byrne, Evie McCormack and Jana Dixon (Year 6). It is no easy task to speak publicly in front of hundreds of people, particularly when you are a primary school child. All the children completed this challenging task particularly well. This programme is designed to develop these public speaking skills and confidence for the children to speak in front of an audience and it was fantastic to see these skills develop through- out the school, a great way to finish Term 2! Another highlight to end the second term was the wonderful response from our school families to the appeal for the homeless people in our community. We collected over 130 boxes of toiletries etc for the less fortunate people in our society. A very generous response by everyone in our community, so a huge thank you to all families involved. The start of Term 3, as mentioned early this year will also see our focus change from teaching Japanese to the children on Thursdays to teaching “Mindfulness”. This is a new programme where our intention is to explicitly teach children a range of relaxation techniques which we feel, within the busyness of the lives of our children, will be very beneficial skills to develop. The “Mindfulness” programme will be following the same timetable as the “Japanese” programme and we are very fortunate to have Michelle Renton on staff who is able to teach both areas. We will be trialling this programme this semester, asking for feedback towards the end of the year before making a decision for the future of these 2 areas in 2016 and beyond. After a few months of planning, we have also decided to implement a “Protective Behaviours” programme at Our Lady of Fatima. We will be using a 10 lesson programme for all classes from Kindy to Year 6, which will be taught between now and the middle of next term. The essence of the programme is based on the premise that all children have a right to feel safe physically and psychologically. The programme is simply called, Protective Behaviours WA and information about it can be found on the PBWA website at www.protectivebehaviourswa.org.au. The programme is designed to explicitly teach the children about safe behaviours for themselves and others. A letter informing parents about this programme will be sent out by group email today, so please look out for that. There has been a significant amount of publicity regarding the Royal Commission recently and our Archbishop has been very proactive in establishing a programme throughout all the parishes in Western Australia. A DVD was shown to all parishioners in every parish throughout the state on the first weekend of the school holidays outlining the “Safeguarding Project” programme where a person in each parish will be provided with specific training to be able to be the first point of contact for children, vulnerable adults and other members of the parish regarding suspicions of abuse and other safeguarding concerns within the parish. This is a wonderful proactive initiative from the Archbishop on behalf of the Catholic Church to provide the safest possible environment for our children. The coordinator of this programme is a lady called Andrea Musulin who is a WA Police officer and mother of 6 children. She is also a key person in the development of the Protective Behaviours WA programme. From the Principal

cance managing to tip the Thursday night score, ousting Loopy Hamster by 1 solitary point.

Karl winning by his Friday night margin.
Round 16
Finally some Whoppers were given away with some very accurate tipping by Little Nic Nat and Michelle
C. Little Nic Nat won the round though with his Friday night margin.
