FINANCIAL PEACE UNIVERSITY- UPDATE!

The Stewardship Committee would like to provide an update regarding Financial Peace University (FPU)

right here at Our Lady of Consolation.

The next semester will begin on September 9, 2015 and will meet each Wednesday evening for 9 weeks,

from 6:00 PM- 8:00 PM.

According to Dave Ramsey, we all need a plan for our money.

Financial Peace University (FPU) is that plan!

It teaches God's ways of handling money. Through video teaching, class discussions and interactive small

group activities, FPU presents biblical, practical steps to get you from where you are to where you've dreamed

you could be. This plan will show you how to get rid of debt, manage your money, spend and save wisely, and

much more!

Our first offering of FPU saw 30 people learn about God’s principles for money, develop a game plan to win

with money and encourage other members of the class in their journey as well. We still have room in this next

class for you!

We will offer FPU again beginning September 9, 2015 and we expect another great turnout. Please, take this

step for you and your family and become a member of this FPU class. You will be BETTER prepared for your

Christmas shopping and have the tools to have a peaceful Christmas Season!

One way to find out more information, or to register for the class, is to visit the website,

www.daveramsey.com or email your Stewardship Committee Chairperson at [email protected]

Are you a Mandated Reporter?

As part of our Catholic commitment to safe environments, the Archdiocese recently updated its policies and

training curriculum for mandated reporters of child abuse and neglect. These new policies reflect the

Church’s commitment to always do more, as well as new Pennsylvania laws that went into effect December

31, 2014.

If you have direct contact with children, you may be a Mandated Reporter.

Mary Wishneski is our Safe Environment Coordinator and will be working with our parish in the coming

weeks to educate mandated reporters about their responsibilities and how to properly report child abuse to

ChildLine, PA’s 24-hour child abuse reporting hotline. Mary can be reached at 610-857-3510 to answer any

questions. Information is also available at www.childyouthprotection.org.

As we continue to do all we can to keep our children safe, also know that the Archdiocesan Office for Child

and Youth Protection provides services, resources and support toward healing for victims and survivors of

child sexual abuse and their families.

Victim services can be reached at 1-888-800-8780 or via email at [email protected].

July 19, 2015-The Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson

In the good ol’ summertime, the local bookstore is apt to coax us to buy either “Books for the Season” or “Books for the

Beach” with attractive displays right near the store entrance. The books are light reading to be sure, meant to accompany

a cold lemonade or a lemoncello.

Just enough to hold our attention along with a coating of sunscreen firmly in place. If you’re fortunate enough to be able

to read on the beach, your enjoyment can be at least doubled.

May I humbly suggest that if your summertime vacation brings you near a large body of water, you don’t need a printed

or electronic book at all. You can read God’s open book of nature, and even gain a perfect backdrop for prayer.

Nobody will know what you’re doing, because you’ll be silent. The ocean offers its own invitation to go deep inside

yourself where serious thought resides. As we gaze, there is the fascination of its vast expanse; the ever-changing water

colors; the constancy of its crashing waves; the ebb and flow of its tides. It is all free for the taking.

In our youth, all of that is usually lost to activities like swimming and body surfing as uses for the ocean.

But with the onset of the years, we benefit from the wisdom of a second look at what is right in front of us at the beach,

and we see new things. Especially if we are blest with a Christian outlook on life.

Take today’s story in Mark’s gospel. Whenever His mission permitted, Jesus shows a decided preference for the sea.

His first followers made their living on the sea. He preaches from Peter’s boat.

He multiplies a fish catch way beyond the expected. He calms a roiling sea and even walks upon the water to teach the

first Pope all about faith. He’ll take a boat ride rather than walk to get to certain places.

Another of Jesus’ preferences comes to the fore in today’s Gospel: the necessity to get “far from the madding crowd” by

sea or land. That crowd cancels out His desired reprieve.

They are already filling up “the deserted place” He sought. But instead of a frustrated demeanor or even a good-natured

order from Him to them to “scoot”, His great heart is filled with something called “compassion.” So He feeds their

minds first and then their bodies with the Good News.

St. Mark follows this scene with his account of the feeding of the five thousand. Here’s a question: Do you ever consider

how compassionate God really is? That word “compassion” derives from two Latin words “cum” meaning “with” and

“passio” meaning “suffer.” Hence, “to suffer with.”

The dictionary defines it as “pity inclining one to be merciful.” It certainly is a hallmark of Jesus, who is God in the

flesh. Too often we box God in with images of a stern Judge or an aloof Lord who cares not for “little old me.” But He

does! Next December, our Church embarks on a Jubilee Year of Mercy as decreed by Pope Francis, who embodies the

virtue.

This midsummer Sunday is a perfect day to look inside ourselves to audit our “mercy quotient.” That is, compassion for

ourselves as well as for others.

Being oceanside is a great backdrop for reinvigorating this baptismal mission we all have. But minus an ocean view, all

you really need is the perfect book to prep your thoughts. Yes, it’s available at most bookstores. It’s the one we just read

from at this Mass.

First Reading: Jeremiah 23:1-6

Jeremiah predicts the restoration of the Davidic line of kings for Israel. Jesus will be that “righteous shoot” who will

bring justice and right to the land after a succession of bad kings.

Second Reading: Ephesians 2:13-18

Paul declares that the Gentiles and Jews are now meant to be one new human family. Headed by Christ, this union will

bring true peace and union with God.

Gospel: Mark 6:30-34

In an apparent preface to the story of the feeding of the five thousand, three verses tell of Jesus’ attempted retreat to a

“deserted place” with the apostles. The crowd that precedes Him there is in such need that they evoke Jesus’ compas-

sion.
