The news and ideas magazine for the Agents of Liberty National
LNL
What is it that separates a leader from an ordinary person? One might argue a leader is distinguished by his or her abilities, skills, knowledge, vision, or even a commanding and inspiring voice and posture. Others might contend experience and years of service are what make up a leader’s defining qualities. I wouldn’t necessarily disagree with any of these valuable attributes, but to me, a leader is someone who passes on his or her knowledge, experience, and insight to others in order to help them forge their own success and rise to the top themselves. Leaders, therefore, are not the singular, alienated figures they are so often portrayed as being. Leaders are those who take what they’ve learned from their mentors and pay it forward in order to empower others.
At Liberty National, we’re in the business of creating new leaders every day. We do this by first offering our people what they need and then allowing them to create their own success. I’m sure you’ve heard the old adage: Give a man a fish, feed him for a day; teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime. Our Company is one that thrives on this principle. Every Branch should be familiar with this method of operation, as the process of training and climbing the Company ladder runs continuously from Branch Managers all the way to the newest recruits. Our knowledge of success is not for us alone; our knowledge is best used when we impart it to others. After all, their success is ours, the Branch’s, the Company’s, and the customer’s.
When you coach and train new or inexperienced people, you not only develop them to become successful Agents, AUMs, UMs, and so on, you create strong teams and you allow yourself more time to focus on the vision of the Company and what will grow your Branch. For instance, AUMs – the Agency Builders – should be focused on training and building their teams. A Unit Manager should concentrate on the Agency Builders and on preparing to become a Branch Manager. Branch Managers should spend their time and energy on growing their Branches. And everyone, from the newest recruit to the seasoned Branch Manager, should place personal recruiting at the top of his or her list.
I want to stress that effective training is the key to this entire process. If your focus is solely on building your team by simply giving business to new Agents, your endeavor will be wasted after they go out on their own and are unable to close the sale … they won’t want to stick around for long. It’s essential our new Agents learn how to make a successful career with LNL, and that requires more effort than just
giving them a sale. So teach them to ‘fish’ so they have the capability to succeed and to train others to do the same. And make sure you and your trainees know that success doesn’t happen overnight – proper guidance comes first. This is a career that calls for time, hard work, and stamina, but it has the potential to be significantly rewarding for those willing to invest themselves in it.
Remember, personal recruiting is where the training process begins, and it should be a priority for everyone. And when new people come in, new leaders are made when successful Agents pass on the gift of knowledge (not the gift of sales) to those willing to learn.
So go on. Cast your line. See what recruiting and training can do for your career (and the careers of those you mentor). Become an inspiration and help others follow suit. It’s time to showcase the talent I know you have by being a leader, forming leaders, and creating success all around.

Liberty National Book ClubAfter a long day in the field, relax and unwind with LNL’s official Book of the Month! April’s featured read is Stephen Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Here’s a glimpse of what to expect in this page turner:
In The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey simplifies the common habits of successful people, presenting them in a manner that’s easy to understand. Covey did not invent these seven habits, instead considering them universal principles.
The 7 habits are:
1. Be Proactive: Principles of Personal Choice
2. Begin with the End in Mind: Principle of Personal Vision
3. Put First Things First: Principles of Integrity and Execution
4. Think Win/Win: Principles of Mutual Benefit
5. Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood: Principles of Mutual Understanding
6. Synergize: Principles of Creative Cooperation
7. Sharpen the Saw: Principles of Balanced Self-Renewal

THE LAW OF BUY-IN #14
We talk a lot about the importance of ‘buy-in’. It creates a shared vision that allows our Branches to continue to grow and prosper year after year. As Roger Smith and Steve DiChiaro lead our Company with the vision they share for our growth and success, so do each of you lead with a vision. When you’re an Agent, it may feel like a personal vision, but as you move along your career path with Liberty National, that vision moves and grows along with you. When you become a leader … whether Assistant Unit Manager, Unit Manager, Branch Manager, or Director … others buy into your vision and bring it closer to reality every day.
All of us associated with this great Company share a vision of growth and success that is limitless. Are you one of the leaders bringing that vision to reality? IT’S TIME!

Tackle Box of SkillsSuccess isn’t just handed to you. As a professional, you are expected to take what you learn and apply it in the field. If you’ve
been to Leadership Academy at the Home Office, don’t knowledge hoard – share that wisdom with your Branch! If you
haven’t been to LLA, what’s stopping you? The information imparted by the Company’s leaders is priceless, so soak it up
like a sponge, tuck it into your metaphorical tackle box, and retain it long after you return to your Branch. Instead of telling
your Agents how to make sales, teach them how to sell. Talented Agents must be able to teach others the tricks of the trade.
There’s no use telling Joe Schmoe to use the Needs-Based Laptop Sales Presentation if he doesn’t know how or why he should
use it. Teach, don’t tell. Coach others, don’t keep it to yourself! You have the power to take your own destiny under control.
Whether your goal is to qualify for Convention or become a Branch Manager, let it be known! Hold yourself accountable and
make it happen. And remember to always dream big, because at Liberty National dreams do come true.

Leading the way at LLA!
Steve DiChiaroExecutive Vice President and Chief Agency Officer
I love Liberty National Leadership Academy! The atmosphere in the Home Office Conference Center is absolutely electric during Academy week, and the LLA101 meeting last month lived up to that. An excited and motivated group of Assistant Unit Managers attended and instituted an ongoing exchange of ideas between speakers and attendees that was absolutely phenomenal. The enthusiasm these AUMs displayed made me feel really good about the future of Liberty National. I have no doubt when they returned to their respective Branches, they brought renewed energy coupled with new skills and new ideas. LLA is like a shot of adrenaline for all of us associated with it. If you haven’t yet attended Liberty National Leadership Academy, make it a personal goal to qualify. It will enrich your skill set immensely and allow you to become a more valuable member of your Branch.
However, we all know it’s after Leadership Academy that the real work begins. This is the time you reaffirm your commitment to yourselves, to your Branch, and to Liberty National. This is the time you dig in and make success happen.
How? Training is critical, and I see training as a two-part issue. First, a new Agent has to learn what he or she needs to say. That means learning scripts in the Training and Sales Playbooks to obtain referrals, in-home appointments, walk ‘ talk appointments, etc. It means studying the sales-focused training PDFs and PowerPoint tools available for Worksite Advantage and the Needs-Based Laptop Sales Presentation. It means knowing Liberty National products, knowing sample presentations, absorbing every bit of information you can as you listen during sales calls. Once you learn what to say, you must learn how to say it. And scripts and
other training materials tell you that. Practice scripts with fellow Agents; practice at home with your spouse and kids; practice with the family dog if it helps. Just practice! Everything can be a role-play situation, especially when you’re just beginning your Liberty National career. Learn the ‘right words’ to say and then learn how to say them to set the appointments, give the presentations, and ultimately make the sales.
Measuring how well training is working is just as important as the training itself. I believe what we measure and how we measure it determines what we consider relevant. And training is extremely relevant! Is the training getting you and your Agents what you want? If not, why not? What can you change to alter the outcome? Are your Agents putting in adequate time learning the words? Are you giving adequate time to showing them how to use those words? Examine, review, and improve your training processes as needed to create the outcome you all want.
Are you familiar with Peter Drucker? Drucker was a management consultant, educator, and author of numerous books about management philosophy. He invented the concept of ‘management by objectives’, which for Liberty National means defining objectives within our Company and Branches so everyone agrees to the objectives and understands what we must do to achieve them. It’s all about the concept of the buy-in. If we agree on what we need to do to achieve what we want to achieve, we can do anything … and nothing can stop us.
Remember, no matter what position you hold in your Branch, take ownership. You are in charge; it is your responsibility to do what is required to succeed; you are accountable! Then approach everything you do with that same single-minded approach. As Drucker said, “The best way to predict your future is to create it.”
My heartiest congratulations to our March Madness winners! It was a hard-driving competition. March Madness is over now, but the need to maintain its energy and competitiveness is not. Keep that same dedication and drive going all year long!
