Committing Myself to Challenges
“I didn’t choose my major but my major chose me.” This is the answer for those whoasked me why I study engineering in HKUST. When I was in middle School, I wanted to bea politician to make a better world. I didn’t want to be silent and integrated myself withcomputers in a laboratory. Under no circumstances should I become a nerd sitting infront of the machines and debugging the programs. I didn’t think I can survive thestudies when I realized I was admitted into the computer science program. It is true thatthe computer science curriculum is well-packed; it is true that my classmates performreally well; it is true that I have zero interest about programming. But later on, I justrealized my worries are pointless.
My perceptions to HKUST and engineering have a 180-degree change as I started on mystudies here. In HKUST, there are many chances to talk to professors directly. Talking tothem, I know more about what is engineering. I have been misunderstanding this term“computer science” for ages. Computer science is all about how to make things possibleand how to solve the practical problems in society. It is highly related to the life ofhuman beings. Apart from that, my classmates are willing to extend a great hand to mewhen I am facing difficulties in school work. HKUST gives me many challenges. But at thesame time, it is a place that sheds me a whole new way to see things and teaches me tohurdle those predicaments.
I want to share my little tiny story to people who want to commit themselves tochallenges as well.

This is Terry, now in my third year studying Computer Engineering and BusinessManagement. I very much treasure the four years in HKUST. I truly feel theuniversity’s effort in nurturing its students. In the past two years, HKUST offered metwo major benefits, academic excellence and global exposure.
Academic Excellence:It is not rare to see our professors on newspaper because of their excellent researchwork. Feeling their passion in different domains of study, we never hesitate to askquestions and discuss with them in class. They are interested in any questions raisedand take them very seriously to make concepts clear to students. Their respecttowards knowledge is very impressive to me, driving me to discover more in mystudies.
Global Exposure:HKUST offers me an opportunity to study abroad. Now I am studying in the UnitedStates for one semester (Fall semester, 2011-12) and I am applying for anotherexchange opportunity in Taiwan. The school is so helpful to smooth administrativeprocesses like credit transfer, course approval request, communication with hostinstitutions, etc. All the convenience offered by the school shows its passion insending us out to gain international experience. I can feel this from our staff andthe sophisticated yet flexible exchange system. All in all, HKUST is an excellenteducator. My experience in UST proves I have made the right choice two years ago.Click here to go back

Hey there, this is Jeff. I can’t believe I am in my final year in HKUST already, well, somesaid that time flies when you are having fun; in my case, it’s more than just “fun”. Since, Ialways wanted to study engineering, it seems logical for me to pursuit my highereducation in the UK, the home country of engineering; but I came back to Hong Kongand choose HKUST. It was the best choice I could have made, because I always wantedto study Chemical Engineering and HKUST is the only university in Hong Kong whichoffers such program.
I have only heard rumours about how academic orientated HKUST is after the firstsemester began. Was I worried? Of course, I always believe that as well as academic, theactual “university life” is very important! I didn’t know whether I will have the chance toexperience my “university life”; but it turned out that the academic side is manageabletogether with the tones of activities I got involved (such as social enterprise, students’society, student development program and research etc.).
One of the many activities I joined is the School of Engineering Student Ambassadorprogram. Unlike other roles, I feel that being a Student Ambassador give me a sense offeeling that I am making a contribution and impact on the others; giving advice andsharing my experience with students, telling the public what engineering really is andhow it affects our daily lives. This experience is surely one of the most meaningfulexperiences I have had in UST.
