THE FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST Morning Worship – 9:30 a.m.

June 27, 2021

Silent prayer for use in preparation for worship:

We love Thee, O God, and we desire to love Thee more and more. Grant that we may love Thee as much as we ought. Let Christ dwell in our

hearts, so to keep watch over our lips, our steps, and our deeds. In love for Thee, give us love, sweetest of all gifts, which knows no enemy. Most loving Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, let our hearts, frozen in sin, cold to Thee and cold to others, be warmed by Thy divine and cleansing fire.

So help and bless us in Thy Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

A prayer of Anselm of Canterbury, 1033-1109 PRELUDE Prelude and Nocturne Alexander Scriabin

Alexandra Nichols, Piano *CALL TO WORSHIP/PRAYER OF ADORATION

A prayer of David, adapted from I Chronicles 29:10-13

Praise be to You, O LORD, God of our father Israel, from everlasting to everlasting.

YOURS, O LORD, IS THE GREATNESS AND THE POWER AND THE GLORY AND THE MAJESTY AND THE SPLENDOR,

For everything in heaven and earth is Yours. YOURS, O LORD, IS THE KINGDOM; YOU ARE EXALTED AS HEAD OVER ALL. Wealth and honor come from You; You are the ruler of all things. IN YOUR HANDS ARE STRENGTH AND POWER TO EXALT AND GIVE STRENGTH

TO ALL. Now, our God, we give You thanks, and praise Your glorious name.

*+HYMN When Morning Gilds the Skies

PRAYER OF CONFESSION (first silently, then in unison)

LET YOUR MIGHTY OUTSTRETCHED ARM, O LORD GOD, BE OUR DEFENSE; LET YOUR MERCY AND LOVING KINDNESS IN JESUS CHRIST YOUR SON BE OUR SALVATION; LET YOUR TRUE WORD BE OUR INSTRUCTION; LET THE GRACE OF YOUR LIFE-GIVING SPIRIT BE OUR COMFORT AND CONSOLATION. LET YOUR GRACE AND MERCY THROUGH JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD BE OUR REDEMPTION, AND LET HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS BE OUR SINS’ CURE, TO THE END AND IN THE END. AMEN. (A prayer of John Knox, 1514-1572)

Lamentations 3:22-33 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases. His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.

“The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.”

The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the one who seeks him. It is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.

It is good for a man to bear the yoke while he is young. Let him sit alone in silence, for the Lord has laid it on him. Let him bury his face in the dust — there may yet be hope. Let him offer his cheek to one who would strike him, and let him be filled with insults.

For the Lord will not cast off forever. Though He brings grief, yet He will have compassion according to the abundance of His steadfast love; for He does not willingly bring affliction or grief to the children of men.

Mark 5:21-36 When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the sea, a large crowd gathered about Him while He was by the sea. Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing Jesus, he fell at His feet and implored him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Please come and lay Your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.” So Jesus went with him.

And a great crowd followed him and thronged about him. And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and who had suffered a great deal under the care of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. For she thought, “If I touch even His garments, I will be made well.” And immediately the hemorrhage ceased, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease.

And Jesus, perceiving in Himself that power had gone out from Him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?” And His disciples said to Him, “You see the crowd pressing around You, and yet you ask, ‘Who touched me?’” But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling, fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your disease.”

While Jesus was still speaking, some came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue ruler, and said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” But overhearing[ what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.”

GREENWOOD COMMUNITY CHURCH, PRESBYTERIAN Warwick, Rhode Island

June 27, 2021 WELCOME to all who are worshiping in our sanctuary today; welcome,

too, to all worshiping online! The service will be archived and posted after the benediction and be available for viewing and/or downloading. A special word of welcome to any and all visiting with us in person or

online this morning … welcome to our fellowship! FLOWERS TODAY are given to the glory of God in loving celebration of Joanne Santee’s eightieth birthday by the Fairbairn family, and in loving memory of Nancy Allen by Karen, Christopher and Stephanie Allen.

SUMMER CHOIR, a favorite annual activity and a WONDERFUL chance for first-time singers to try choral singing in a low-pressure environment! The program will run on Sunday mornings from July 4 – August 22, meeting at 9:00 AM in the sanctuary to learn a simple, fun anthem to share in worship at 9:30. No experience required, and you don’t have to commit to the whole summer … stop by any week(s) you would like! All ages are welcome; bring the whole family. It has been such a privilege to welcome so many first-time, current, and returning singers, and to see families leading worship together through this program; I do hope you will consider giving it a try.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL July 12 - July 16. "DESTINATION DIG!” where kids will discover more than dirt when they unearth exciting evidences that biblical events were not just stories. We can't wait to explore a new EXPERIENCE and have a blast at VBS! Ages four through entering grade six, register at www.gccp.org .

MUSIC ASSOCIATE ALEXANDRA NICHOLS will lead our worship through music this morning as John and Olivia Black travel to Florida for John's organ recital at the First Presbyterian Church of Pompano Beach. Alexandra is currently double-majoring in piano and violin performance at Rhode Island College (and minoring in Italian!); her prelude and postlude selections represent material she has learned in her studies with Dr. Judith Lynn Stillman. We also welcome baritone William ("Billy") Petterson, a music education student at Rhode Island College double-majoring in clarinet and voice, who has also served as choir support these past months since our Chancel Choir has resumed regular worship leadership.

PLANNING CALENDAR for September 2021 – July 2022 is now being assembled in the church office! Please be sure to secure the dates your group or committee will need for the annual calendar which will be printed and distributed to officers and committees at the September meeting.
