Dear B-V Families and Friends,
Author and Staff Developer Carl Anderson has been working with
Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade teachers for a 5 week span on the
writing unit of personal narrative. Grade level teachers across the
district came to classrooms at B-V to discuss the craft of writing,
strategies to help students and look at student work together.
Thank you to Dr. LeFevre, Mrs. Perrelle and Mr. Hill / Mrs.
Nightingale for hosting this terrific learning experience.
After visits, the other teachers involved would try out
mini-lessons and conferences seen and discussed in these
conversations. Dr. Ruller, Executive Director of Curriculum and
Instruction, said “The district is thrilled to be able to provide
professional learning experiences for our teachers. Our work with
world renowned writing expert Carl Anderson has been exciting. Our
teachers eagerly took on the work with our students, your children.
We look forward to welcoming Carl back for grades 3-5 and again
next year as we explore opinion and informational writing.” Here
are some pictures from these experiences:
Our 3rd grade students did a wonderful job under the guidance of
Mr. Hefele and Ms. Roberts. The following day, our 5th grade
students had their D.A.R.E. Graduation. Here are some pictures from
our concert:

On Wednesday, our 5th grade students and their family members were
involved in this year’s D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education)
graduation. Thanks to Detective Gabrielsen and staff members, our
5th grade students learned about ways to live safe and healthy
lives. Students reviewed ways to avoid
involvement in drugs, gangs and violence and practiced skills to
deal with potential conflict. This opportunity helps open the line
of communication between our students and law enforcement. In life,
we know that a variety of serious scenarios will arise and D.A.R.E.
helps equip students with techniques and rationale to handle those
difficult situations.
Kudos to Belen Suarez and Naomi Swan for their great speeches along
with a motivating speech from our Superintendent, Mr. Hochreiter.

Notes from the Classrooms First Grade
Coyote Steals the Blanket The first graders had an opportunity to
visit the Hendrick Hudson Free Library together this week. They
were treated to a wonderful puppet show by Mrs. Dewey, one of the
librarians, based on the book, “Coyote Steals the Blanket” a Ute
Tale retold and illustrated by Janet Stevens. The children
thoroughly enjoyed the show along with the other stories Mrs. Dewey
had to share.
Third Grade In the last two weeks, we finished our Math unit on
graphing and are about to start our
final unit on problem solving and geometry. Geometry is the study
of shapes. We have been searching for reliable facts about our
animals from Brazil. We will turn these facts into sentences and
the sentences into paragraphs. These paragraphs will make up our
research report.
Because we all worked so hard and put our best efforts in when we
took the state tests in ELA and Math over the last two weeks, we
are celebrating by creating our own ice cream sundaes! We have been
practicing our recorders for our big concert. You will be amazed!
We are also very happy that Mother Nature has remembered that it is
spring and brought us warmer weather so we can play outside.
Written by the Third Grade students of Mrs. Paraskevaides and Mrs.
Holzman
Fifth Grade The past few weeks have been very busy for the fifth
grade. The students graduated from the D.A.R.E. program today. We
are extremely proud of all of the students. Thank you to Detective
Gabrielsen for all his hard work and the life lessons he taught our
students. On Tuesday, we traveled to Blue Mountain Middle School
and met with Mrs. Gagne, who will be their guidance counselor next
year. The students got a tour of the building and had time to ask
questions and learn about their schedules for next year. The
children also had the opportunity to ask questions and learn about
their lockers. The principal, Mr. Owens, reviewed his expectations
and went over all the fun the students will have next year.
Music B-V is very proud of our third grade students. Wednesday,
April 20 at 1:45 the entire third grade performed at their Spring
Recorder Concert. What an awesome job!!!! So many people helped –
thanks to Ms. Irwin for creating the handmade invitations with the
students, Mrs. Holzman and Mrs. Paraskevaides for their continued
dedication and support, Mrs. Guida for assisting at rehearsals and
the Concert, the Custodians: Sal, Eddie and Tommy for all of the
set ups, Mr. Cohen and our secretaries - Mrs. Flannino and Mrs.
Maiello for your patience and for always making sure everything
came together and the parents for your musical support at home and
for the goodies for our reception. Many thanks to the B-V PTA for
the gift of music: a recorder and music book for each third grade
student. Thanks everyone who helped to make this a success!

Let this oath inspire your students to become lifelong
readers!
I promise to read
Each day and each night. I know it's the key To growing up
right.
I'll read to myself, I'll read to a crowd.
It makes no difference If silent or loud.
I'll read at my desk, At home and at school, On my bean bag or
bed,
By the fire or pool.
Each book that I read Puts smarts in my head,
'Cause brains grow more thoughts The more they are fed.
So I take this oath To make reading my way
Of feeding my brain What it needs every day.

Dear Mr. Cohen,
Today we cleaned up around B-V. We found a lot of trash and brought
it in and put it in the garbage so that our field is nice and
clean. Even though it was really gross to pick up other peoples
garbage, we felt like we were helping the Earth. This week in class
we learned that the Earth is our home and we should take care of
it. We talked about the three R’s: reducing, reusing and recycling
as well as the three C’s: cleaning up, conserving and chiming in.
Today, we chimed in to help our school community! Here is a picture
after all of our hard work.
