Authority

Is the author (personal or corporate) is an authority on the subject.

Check author’s credentials which can be found in the back page or on the jacket of the book

Check out who has placed the information of author(s) on the web

Examine the URL to get to the authority behind it, whether it is a personal web directory, or an organisation’s of cial website

Check if the corporation is directly responsible for the publication of the content

Accuracy and Reliability Is the information is accurate and from a reliable source

Is there suf cient supporting information in the form of statistics, reports, footnotes, etc

Are the arguments presented with facts and gures that can be veri ed from other sources quoted in the text

Can the information be veri ed using print or other sources

Is the data gathering and explanation of research methods included

Is the methodology appropriate? Who is the publisher?

What is the type of domain? Does it come from an educational (.edu), commercial (.com), government (.gov) or non-pro t body?

Objectivity

Objectivity means presenting information based on facts

It should not be propaganda material or have a bias in politics, religion, gender, race, nation or personal philosophy

Is there a bias in the writing?

Is the writing a commercial propaganda?

Is the article written to promote or sell some product?

Currency

Currency of information means how current the information is and whether currency is important

When was the book published?

Is it the latest edition?

Is the information based on the latest finding?

Does the list of references contain the most current materials?

Scope

Scope refers to the coverage as far as readership is concerned

For which target group is the information written?

Is it meant for general reading or for academic reading?

How comprehensive is the scope for this target group?

Is the reader expected to read several books just to gather information on one aspect?

Contoh Jawapan Soalan No. 1:Tiga kriteria penilaian maklumat adalah seperti berikut:

i) Authority – semak sama ada Freda McKay adalah orang yang mempunyai authority dalam subjek yang ditulisnya. Semak sama ada penulis adalah orang yang berwibawa, semak buku dan artikel

yang pernah diterbitkannya. Juga perlu disemak sama ada jurnal inijurnal yang berwibawa

ii) Accuracy dan reliability – semak sama ada maklumat yang diberi itutepat dan dari sumber yang boleh dipercayai misalnya jurnal ini sama ada berwibawa atau tidak. Juga perlu disemak sama ada fakta-fakta yang diberikan boleh disahkan dari sumber rujukan lain..

iii) Objectivity – semak sama ada maklumat yang diberi itu mengandungi fakta yang tepat. Pastikan maklumat tersebut tidak berat sebelah dan berbentuk propagranda. Pastikan juga penulisan tidak menjurus kepada sesuatu jantina, bangsa dan agama.

Bukan semua bahan yang diperolehi dari Internet dapatdigunakan untuk tugasan kerana tugasan merupakanpenulisan berbentuk akademik yang perlu memenuhi 5 kriteria:

i) Authority – semak sama ada pengarangnya adalah orang yang mempunyai authority dalam subjek yang ditulisnya. Semak sama ada pengarang adalah orang yang berwibawa, semak buku dan artikel yang pernah diterbitkannya. Juga perlu disemak sama ada artikel ini artikel yang berwibawa

ii) Accuracy dan reliability – semak sama ada maklumat yang diberi itu tepat dan dari sumber yang boleh dipercayai misalnya bahan tersebut ini sama ada berwibawa atau tidak. Juga perlu disemak sama ada fakta-fakta yang diberikan boleh disahkan dari sumber rujukan lain..

iii) Objectivity – maklumat yang diberi itu mesti mengandungi fakta yang tepat. Pastikan maklumat tersebut tidak berat sebelah dan berbentuk propagranda. Pastikan juga penulisan tidak menjurus kepada sesuatu jantina, bangsa dan agama.

iv) Currency – pastikan maklumat yang diberi itu adalah sesuatu fakta yang terkini. Semak bila ianya ditulis atauditerbitkan. Pastikan juga rujukannya adalah yang terkini

v) Scope – pastikan bidang penulisannya sama ada memenuhi kumpulan sasarannya. Semak berapa dalampenulisan tersebut dan pastikan juga sama ada penulisannya untuk pembaca am atau pembaca tertentu
