iPads in Health Care
Information Technology Services | Technology-Enriched Learning Environment
“Technology is changing the world at warp speed and nowhere is this more evident than in healthcare settings”
Dr. Carol Huston, MSN, DPA, FAAN
Background-Fundamental changes are occurring in nursing
-Practitioners and patients require access to the most up to date information
-Best available information is needed in the moment and at the point of care
-Embedding technology use within an educational program supports both learning and clinical practice needs
UOITFacts:
First class Sept, 2003300 Students
2014-2015More than 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students
- Ontario's first laptop-based university, students use a high-end laptop with the latest hardware and industry- and program-specific software to conduct research, make presentations and access course material;
- Greatest advantages of this national award-winning program is that all students have equal access to the same technology, resources and services;
- UOIT's campus is designed for students to use their laptops in classrooms, labs, the library, residences, food spaces, meeting spaces and more.
UOIT facts cont.
Health Care Today- 2012 NEC report commissioned by CNA indicated:Nursing students today are the most technology-savvy generation in history (NEC, 2012, p. 35) - 2012 EU TaskForce on eHealth concluded “healthcare lags at least 10 years behind in the implementation of IT solutions”
- ICT approach to healthcare and health education must now be considered nothing short of a global priority
Educating Nursing Students- UOIT admits 200 students annually to the Nursing Programs
- UOIT’s unique ICT approach has fostered a Nursing Program actively involved in the evolution of “high tech-high touch” nursing that prepares graduates for the demands of 21st century nursing
- Technology is seen as foundational to nursing practice and is embedded across the teaching and learning continuum
Technology and Educating Nursing Students- Positive impressions of handheld technology use among nursing students
- Ease of use & enhanced overall learning in practicum settings
- Improved research utilization skills
- Evaluated as more beneficial than use of traditional information sources (i.e. textbooks)
Study Description- Goal of gaining insight into student experiences with and perceptions of the iPad mini
- Sept 2013, 24 students in 2nd year BScN program
- All placed in one clinical setting at Lakeridge Health, Oshawa
Study Description cont.
- Mixed method data collection at 3 points to examine experiences and perceptions of the tablet use for classroom and practicum, patterns of technology use, professional self-efficacy
- In addition to the standard laptop that all UOIT students receive , the trial group was provided with an iPad mini for 2 terms
The Choice:
iPad mini – First Generation
32GB WiFi
7.9-inch display
Lightning to USB Cable and USB Power Adapter
Envisioning iPad Use
Classroom - Taking notes- Reading- Presentations- Exchanging files with students- LMS (BlackBoard)
Envisioning iPad Use cont.
Practicum - Patient teaching
- Nursing specific Apps (PEPID)- Accessing e-texts- Web and Intranet resources available from hospital- Note taking
Unique Considerations- Sourcing a carrying case/strap for use in healthcare settings
- Trialing infection control practices on device/case
- Developing policies (privacy, exposure of device/case to potentially infectious materials)
Unique Considerations cont.- Disabling camera device (Phase 1)
- Developing terms and conditions for use in practicum
- Working with practicum placement (Lakeridge Health) to secure extended Internet access
Preliminary Findings- Students take notes during hand-over or as an organizational tool upon which they upload a worksheet
- Beneficial tool in providing health promotion strategies for their patients via video clips on topics such as baby baths or cardiac rehabilitation
Preliminary Findings cont.- Tremendous asset (i.e. upload all text books making information available at fingertips, building confidence within the students)
- First half of the trial would suggest that few students have chosen to use the iPad mini device for classroom learning, instead persisting with laptop use and growing integration of smartphones as an adjunct
- Influenced by the attitudes, perceptions, and practices of educators and nurses with whom they interact
Implementation Considerations Campus Infrastructure
- Wireless Signal Strength- Can instructors connect reliably- Speed tests during different times of the day- Classroom location – building materials
Asset Management- Procurement
- Inventory - Tracking- Storage
Implementation Considerations cont.
Content Management- How will faculty/students load iPad with material- LMS System – Utilize BlackBoard
Pedagogical thoughts- What is the vision for the tablet deployment- How will the iPad be integrated into the curriculum
Implementation Considerations cont. Classroom
- Are the desks appropriate- Artificial and ambient lighting issues
App Purchase and Management- How will paid apps be purchased/distributed- Apple ID considerations - Will faculty and students be allowed to administer
The Case:
Benefits:- Built-in scratch protector total touchscreen- Survives drops from 4 feet / 1.2 meters- Access to all buttons, ports and controls- Maximum sound output and clarity- Anti-reflective optical-glass camera lens- Removable shoulder strap included- Great sealing
Cons:- Cannot use a stylus with Frē (you can use stylus with nuud)
LifeProof Gen 1 Case - frē

Nursing App Goals
Need an easy way to bring all the information they need to make accurate decisions to the bedside for:
- Diagnosis - Treatment - Nursing Diagnoses - Nursing Considerations - Patient Teaching
PEPID – RN Pro Nursing Suite
- Access to special clinical content- Drug database- Pill identification- Symptom checker- Drug allergy- Illustrations- Dosage and medical calculators
- See a comparison of how PEPID compares to competing apps:http://www.pepid.com/products/RN/comparison.asp
Faculty OrientationProvide in person, hands-on, workshop on iPads for all participating faculty
- iOS tips and tricks- WiFi setup- Apple ID- Best practices (usage, care, cleaning)- Recommended App list was provided to encourage
faculty success
Student Orientation- 1 hour of class time devoted to students- First time setup and access code config- WiFi setup- Apple ID logon- Best practices (usage, care, cleaning)- Issues with Find My iPad (requested not to install)- Service Desk contact- Recommended App list was provided to encourage
student success
Protecting data
- Physical security
- Use a Passcode
- Alphanumeric is recommended- Prevent others from accessing your
device
Campus Services Offered- Web Access via Campus WiFi
- Email services offered via UOIT.net (Google Apps)
- Network printing – No
- Network folders - No
Support Services Considerations- Service Desk was given orientation on tablet pilot
- With Service Desk manager, tablet pilot service guidelines were outlined and communicated to desk staff and pilot participants
- Escalated service calls were directed to TSA Group
- Procedure for damage; (fees)
- Procedure for loss/stolen (reports)
Findings- Motivation for participation in study often related to excitement about emerging technology for use in all areas of student lives
- The importance of institutional supports, including needs-based faculty development
Findings cont.
- Faculty uptake is a barrier or facilitator to student uptake
- Student use of iPad in practicum is both directed by demonstrations of applications and emerges naturally over time
Conclusion
- iPad mini trial is an educational innovation aimed not only at imagining potential improvements, but taking action toward making them a reality
- Use of mobile devices “promises to be one of the most transformational information technologies in health care”
- “Technology will never replace human caring. Rather, it can free up human resources to intensify the humanity of health care.” (NEC 2012)
