ASQ Six Sigma CertificationsOverview of Six SigmaSix Sigma is an enterprise-wide business strategy to improve the quality of a product, service, or process. Six Sigma can be applied successfully in all types of industries. The success of GE, Motorola, and others has prompted many organizations to provide Six Sigma training to their employees and successfully completing Six Sigma projects that lead to profitability and growth. Programs that are successful are aligned with the strategy of the business and focus on driving substantive, measurable results.Six Sigma project teams solve the problems using the DMAIC method which is outlined as follows:Phase 1 – Define: In this step, the problem is defined. This includes

identifying the CTQ’s, the critical-to-quality characteristics as defined by the customer and identifying the key factors affecting the CTQ’s.

Phase 2 – Measure: The measure phase consists of two major steps. • Step 1 is to identify the internal processes that influence the CTQ measurements. • Step 2 is to conduct a measurement systems analysis (MSA) which includes gauge studies. A thorough process capability study is performed.

Phase 3 – Analyze: In the analyze phase, the project team determines which inputs are affecting the outputs. This is done using the following three steps: 1. Develop and state a hypothesis about the cause or causes, 2. Test the hypothesis through data analysis, 3. If your hypothesis is correct, add your cause to a list of

significant causes affecting the process.

Phase 4 – Improve: The improve phase involves quantifying the effects of the key variables on the process and developing an improvement plan that modifies the key factors to achieve the desired process improvement.

Phase 5 – Control: In the control phase, a system is put in place to maintain the changes / improvements developed in the Improve phase. This phase involves documenting and monitoring processes.
