Fire Safety Tips

Feel the door handle- If the door handle is hot, don’t open it- Go to a window and call for help

Get out of the building before calling for help- Don’t take time to call before leaving- Get out and find a phone

  Pull fire alarm on your way out  Don’t look for other people or gather your belongings

- Knock on doors as you leave- Yell “FIRE” as you leave

Fire Safety Tips (cont.) Crawl low to the floor

- Thick smoke can make it impossible to see- Toxic chemicals from smoke can be deadly in minutes

  Close the door behind you

- You may help keep the fire from spreading- You may protect your possessions from fire and

smoke damage  If you can’t get out, get someone’s attention

- Yell and scream- Stay low, there is less smoke and poisonous gases close to the floor

Prevention

Take responsibility for prevention

- Assign a non-impaired “event monitor”

- Clean up immediately after parties and take all trash outside

- Do not overload electrical outlets

- Extinguish all smoking materials thoroughly

Protection  Check Smoke Alarms

  - Verify they are in proper working condition

  - Install new batteries at the beginning of each quarter

Plan Escapes Routes

  - Know where all exits are located in the building

  - Practice your escape plans

  Take Fire Alarms Seriously

  - Don’t ignore fire alarms

  - Don’t wait to see fire or smoke

EXTINGUISER USE If you need to use an extinguisher, remember “P-A-S-S”

PULLThe safety pin at the top of the extinguisher

  AIM

The nozzle or hose at the base of the flames. Stay between six and eight feet awayfrom the flames

SQUEEZEPress the handle

  SWEEP

From side to side at the base of the fire until it goes out By following these procedures, a fire can be extinguished in the quickest and safest manner possible.

Power cords with missing insulation are NOT AUTHORIZED. Extended use will cause the wire clamp to cut into the wire.

Ungrounded ZIP Cords are NOT AUTHORIZED.They are made of thin wire and will melt under heavy loads.

NOT AUTHORIZED. All appliances, including heaters, microwaves, coffee makers, irons, TV’s, etc., should be plugged directly into an outlet – not an extension cord.

Extended use may cause the cord to overheat and short out.

NOT AUTHORIZED. All appliances, including heaters, microwaves, coffee makers, irons, TV’s, etc., should be plugged directly into an outlet – Not an FMO.

Adding several high wattage appliances to one FMO may cause the unit to overheat.

Halogen lamps or decorative lamps with plastic lamp shades are NOT AUTHORIZED.

The storing of all sporting equipment, furniture, trash,etc., on walkways, landings and stairs is NOTAUTHORIZED. 

These areas must remain clear at all times.

NOT AUTHORIZED. All charcoal and gas grills must be used away from all builds and overhangs

The blocking of any electrical panel is NOT AUTHORIZED.

A five foot clearance must be maintained around allelectical panels at all times.

• Note: Portable air condition units are authorized as long as the appropriate medical documentation has been submitted through Student Affairs by the deadline indicated on the Student Housing Information Form.
